Lebensdaten Am 13. Dezember 1797 in Düsseldorf geboren.

Heine died in Paris, where he had lived from 1831 as one of the central figures of the literary scene. Among Heine's famous poems is 'Die Lorelei', set to music by Silcher in 1837. It has become one of the most popular of German songs. "I do not know what haunts me,
What saddened my mind all day;
An age-old tale confounds me,
A spell I cannot allay."

(from 'Lorelay') "You're so lovely as a flower,
So pure and fair to see;
I look at you, and sadness

The performer's guide is in its initial phases. Currently only approximately 550 musical settings of Heine's earliest poems are indexed and/or reviewed on this site, i.e. those lyrics in "Junge Leiden," the first section of Buch der Lieder (1827). This project will be extended gradually into later portions of Buch der Lieder , and then into later collections of Heine's poetry.

Heine, Heinrich
WRITER, POET (GERMANY) BORN 13 Dec 1797, Düsseldorf - DIED 17 Feb 1856, Paris
REAL NAME Heine, Harry
GRAVE LOCATION Paris: Montmartre Cimetière (division 27)
Oldest son of the Jewish textile merchant Samson Heine. He studied law and converted to protetantism. In 1821 he met Rahel and Karl August Varnhagen von Ense and in 1822 he visited Hegel. His first writings show a romantic style, but in 1825 he came under the influence of socialism and his tone became more radical. In 1827 he travelled to England and in 1828 to Italy. In 1834 he met his later companion Mathilde Mirat.
His satirical writings were forbidden by the Deutsche Bundesversammlung on December 10, 1835, but France soon afterwards granted him a pension. Heine wrote in German as well as in French. In 1841 he met Wagner and in the same year he married Mathilde at Saint-Supice. After he had become paralysed in 1848 as the result of an illnes of the spinal marrow (he broke down at The Louvre) he wrote pessimistic poetry, published in "Romanzero" (1851).

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Christian Johann Heinrich Heine (born as Harry Heine December 13 February 17 ) was one of the most significant German poets Heine was born into an assimilated Jewish family in D¼sseldorf Germany . His father was a tradesman, who, during the French occupation, found new prospects opening up for Jews. When his father's business failed, Heine was sent to Hamburg, where his rich banker uncle Salomon encouraged him to undertake a commercial career. After Heine's business career failed he turned to the study of law at the universities of G¶ttingen Bonn and Berlin , but found that he was more interested in literature than law, although he eventually took a degree in 1825, at the same time he had decided to convert from Judaism to Protestantism . This was necessary because of the severe restrictions on Jews in the German states; in many cases, they were forbidden, without specific permission, to have their own businesses or to leave the areas in which they were assigned to live. They were also forbidden to become university professors, which was a particular ambition for Heine. Understandably, then, as Heine himself said, his conversion was "the ticket of admission into European culture". Heine is best known for his lyric poetry , much of which was set to music by lieder composers , most notably Franz Schubert and Robert Schumann As a poet Heine made his debut with Gedichte ("Poems") in 1821. Heine's one-sided infatuation with his cousins Amalie and Therese later inspired him to write some of his loveliest lyrics;

German writer who lived in Paris after 1831. His romantic poems and social essays are marked by his love for the German land and people and derision for many modern German institutions. Encyclopedia Heine, Heinrich hīn rĭkh hī nə Buch der Lieder (1827, tr. Book of Songs, 1846), which contains the lyric cycles “Nordsee” and “Lyrisches Intermezzo,” shows his indebtedness to the romantic folk-song poets. Other collections of poems are Neue Gedichte Romanzero (1851), and Letzte Gedichte (1853). Schumann composed music for Heine's poems, as did Schubert, Mendelssohn, Liszt, and many others. His lyrics have been used in more than 3,000 compositions, the most popular perhaps being “Die Lorelei,” with melody by Friedrich Silcher (1789–1860). Heine's later poems and especially his prose works established him as a satirist of barbed wit and as an embittered critic of romanticism, of jingoistic patriotism, and of current social and political affairs. Most poignant are Die Harzreise [Harz journey] (1826) and Reisebilder [travel pictures] (1827–31), which combine poetry and prose.
