Disillusioned bard of a bygone Japan

By ROGER PULVERS
Special to The Japan Times
This story is part of a package on Lafcadio Hearn. To read the introduction, please click here In the century that has passed since the death of Lafcadio Hearn on Sept. 26, 1904, the Japanese people have studiously formulated and maintained a myth and they have done it with all the tools and vigor of nostalgia at their disposal. Hearn (standing, eighth from left) with Sentaro Nishida (standing, fifth from left) (Photo courtesy of Yokohama Archives of History) According to this myth, Hearn, orphan of Europe, grubber in subcultures from Cincinnati and New Orleans to Martinique, transformed himself after arriving in their country in 1890 into the defending champion of Japanese culture. No other foreigner, so this popular myth goes, has been as privy to Japanese secrets, or as devoted to their imaginative recreation; no foreigner then or since has loved Japan as deeply. In the West, meanwhile, Hearn is but a footnote on the faded pages of exotica; a misunderstood mystery of a man who seemed to identify solely with cultural phenomena that had passed their sell-by-dates. It was almost as if this man had to re-create a past before he could start living in the present.

Japan, Ireland events to mark centennial of Hearn's death

By KO HIRANO
Kyodo News
Researchers from around the world will assemble for a series of events in Japan and Ireland starting Saturday to mark the centennial of the death of writer and educator Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904). To draw attention to the commemoration, Japan Post will issue on Nov. 4 an 80 yen stamp with an image of Hearn, who is known in Japan as Koizumi Yakumo and is celebrated for his dedication to introducing Japanese affairs to the world. About 60 experts from Britain, Canada, China, France, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and the United States will discuss Hearn's life and work at six symposiums to be held in Tokyo along with Hyogo, Shimane and Kumamoto prefectures. The first is set for Saturday at the University of Tokyo and the second for Sunday at Tokyo's Waseda University. Organizers believe this is the first series of nationwide events focused solely on a foreign-born writer. In Dublin, where Hearn spent his childhood, a one-day symposium on the man of Irish-Greek parentage is scheduled for mid-November. Paul Murray, a senior Irish diplomat and Hearn expert who was posted to Tokyo from 1978 to 1980, will speak on how Hearn developed an interest in the East when he grew up in Ireland.

Writers' adventures in literature: Lafcadio Hearn is captivated by the port of St Pierre in Martinique, awaiting a terrible fate
              Published: 15 December 2002
Born on Lefkas to a Greek mother and an Anglo-Irish surgeon, and raised in Dublin, journalist, translator and latterly Japanese citizen Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) intended to stay just a few weeks in Martinique when he arrived in 1887. But he fell under the spell of cosmopolitan Saint Pierre on the northwest coast and stayed for two years, writing about his experiences in 'Two Years in the French West Indies', from which this extract is taken. In 1902, Saint Pierre was flattened by a violent volcanic eruption. Hearn's tales endure as a vivid account of Caribbean life and as a picture of a doomed city.
