In full: "...nor the sudden advent of larger knowledge from some elder planet prove for us, by reason of the present moral condition of mankind, nothing less than a catastrophe? might it noteven result in the extinction of the human species?... The rule seems to bethat the dissemination of dangerous higher knowledge, before the masses of a people are ethically prepared to receive it, will always be prevented by the conservative instinct; and we have...." Lafcadio Hearn was born June 27, 1850, on the Greek island of Santa Maura. His mother was Maltese and his father a British army surgeon of Anglo-Irish extraction. When Hearn was 2, his mother abandoned him to an aunt in Dublin, who later sent him to St. Cuthbert's College to prepare for the priesthood. There he lost his left eye in an accident; he lost much of his religious faith as well. His other eye, strained by incessant reading, bulged badly. At 19, extremely short, disfigured, and psychologically maimed, Hearn arrived in Cincinnati, Ohio, where he eventually became a reporter for the

A Short History of Lafcadio Hearn
Courtesy NewSouth Magazine Lafcadio Hearn (Japanese name Koizumi Yakumo, 1850-1904) author, translator, educator is known for his excellent English prose. He is highly regarded by the Japanese people as the first westerner to truly understand their culture. While living in Japan from 1890 to 1904 he wrote articles about Japan in Atlantic Monthly and Harper's . While always writing in English, his Japanese wife, Setsuko, helped him gain great insight into Japanese customs and folklore. Born in Greece of an Irish father and Greek mother, he was given the name Lafcadio, which refers to the Ionian Isle of Lefkas in Greece. At the age of two his parents brought him to Dublin, Ireland where he was raised by an aunt. He studied in France and England before going to Cincinnati at the age of nineteen where he became a newspaper reporter.
