Campaign for UMBC Tops $50 Million
Faculty and staff play major role Thanks to the support of our alumni, faculty and staff, parents, friends, corporations and foundations we have exceeded our goal of $50million with one year remaining in the campaign. With over $57 million already given or pledged, a new goal of $65 million has been set for the end of FY 02. Donations and pledges of 376 faculty and staff members for a total of $269,069 were received during FY 01. These numbers are new highs for the Faculty/Staff portion of the campaign and allowed the donated total to exceed $1 million ($1,079,164). With another good year of "caring", faculty/staff giving will have doubled the campaign goal of $700,000. Future issues of Insights will list faculty and staff donors for FY 02 in every issue. For more information about giving to UMBC contact Gary Rupert at (410) 455-2124 or Rupert@umbc.edu

Biographical File

University of Arizona Biographical File has both photographs and printed materials of numerous UA faculty and staff, dating from 1867 to present. Individual files vary in content and size, containing biographical sketches, resumes, clippings and photographs. Since the photographs are interspersed throughout the collections, not every folder will have images. Access to the material is through an index guide arranged alphabetically by last name. Most individuals have their own folder, otherwise, the information will be found in the general folders for each letter. A B C D ... Z A Acuna, Ed

1913 Obituary Index The following persons may have lived in the city of Antigo, Langlade County as well as nearby northwestern Shawano or northeastern Marathon Counties. They may have also been living anywhere in the world if they had relatives living in or had some connection to the Antigo area. For a search and retrieval fee I will try to obtain a copy or abstract of the person's obituary from the microfilm archive of the local newspapers found at the Antigo Public Library. The fee is payable for my research time and not the results of the search. That means if I am not able for some reason to locate the obituary, it is unreadable, or it is not about the person or relative you are researching the fee is still payable. The Antigo Daily Journal

Lowell Institute for Savings Bank Records 1843-1844 Lowell Institute for Savings 1829-1992 was one of the earliest savings banks established in the United States. Among the bank records were dozens of ledgers listing depositors including Name, Occupation, and the Date they opened their Account. Thanks to the incredible effort and dedication of Roberta Otrembra, nearly 40,000 records are now available in a searchable database.

Colorado Collection
One of many recurrent themes in nineteenth- and twentieth-century American popular music is that of place. Songs have honored streets, cities, rivers, mountains, and states. A few examples include Stephen Foster's "Kentucky Home," James Bland's "Carry Me Back to Old Virginny," George M. Cohan's "Give My Regards to Broadway," and Hoagy Carmichael's "Georgia on My Mind." When published in the sheet music format, the music, lyrics, and illustrations of songs about Colorado combine to form unique expressions of the state's history and natural beauty. Colorado has inspired many composers and lyricists. Perhaps the best known story is that of Katharine Lee Bates drafting her most famous poem "America the Beautiful" at the summit of Pike's Peak during the summer of 1893. After revising the poem in 1904 and again in 1913, it was set to the tune "Materna" composed by Samuel A. Ward. Of course neither the poem nor the resulting beloved patriotic song are just about Colorado, rather they are a tribute to the whole country. However the "purple mountain majesties" that started it all are Colorado's own.
