Name: William Hazlitt Birth Date: April 10, 1778 Death Date: September 18, 1830 Place of Birth: Maidstone, England Place of Death: Paris, France Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: critic, writer William Hazlitt Main Biography The English literary and social critic William Hazlitt (1778-1830) is best known for his informal essays, which are elegantly written and cover a wide range of subjects. Born at Maidstone, Kent, on April 10, 1778, William Hazlitt was the son of the Reverend William Hazlitt, a Unitarian minister. In 1783 the family sailed for America. Three years later, after preaching Unitarianism from Maryland to Maine, the Reverend Hazlitt returned to seek a home for his family in England. Eight-year-old William wrote his father that it would have been "a great deal better for America if the white people had not found it out." The family was reunited at Wem in Shropshire, where William grew happily until 1793, when he went to New College, Hackney, to study divinity. In 1795 he withdrew from New College, feeling unfitted for the ministry. In January 1798 Hazlitt heard Samuel Taylor Coleridge preach in Shrewsbury and wrote that "until then ... I could neither write nor speak ... the light of his genius shone into my soul." Coleridge, however, later described him as "brow-hanging, shoe-contemplative, strange." That May, Hazlitt spent 3 weeks with Coleridge in Somerset, meeting William Wordsworth. That fall he began painting in London and in 1802 had a portrait hung in the academy. In 1802 he lived in Paris for 4 months, studying painting in the Louvre and making his living expenses by copying his favorite masterpieces. He returned to England in 1803 and painted Coleridge and Wordsworth, from whom he now differed politically, since he nearly worshiped and they detested Napoleon Bonaparte. In May war with France was renewed, and Hazlitt was driven out of the Lake District, both for his pro-French views and because of a sexual involvement. In 1804 he made friends with Robert Southey and with Charles and Mary Lamb.

The most sensible people to be met with in society are men of business and of the world, who argue from what they see and know, instead of spinning cobweb distinctions of what things ought to be.

Business

When a thing ceases to be a subject of controversy, it ceases to be a subject of interest. Hazlitt, William Controversy Life is the art of being well deceived. Hazlitt, William Deception Cunning is the art of concealing our own defects, and discovering the weaknesses of others. Hazlitt, William Deception Death cancels everything but truth; and strips a man of everything but genius and virtue. It is a sort of natural canonization. It makes the meanest of us sacred it installs the poet in his immortality, and lifts him to the skies. Death is the greatest assayer of the sterling ore of talent. At his touch the dropsy particles fall off, the irritable, the personal, the gross, and mingle with the dust the finer and more ethereal part mounts with winged spirit to watch over our latest memory, and protect our bones from insult. We consign the least worthy qualities to oblivion, and cherish the nobler and imperishable nature with double pride and fondness. Hazlitt, William

William Hazlitt (1778-1830) English Essayist, Noted Literary Critic
As is our confidence, so is our capacity.
Great thoughts reduced to practice become great acts.
As is our confidence, so is our capacity.
Envy among other ingredients has a mixture of the love of justice in it. We are more angry at undeserved than at deserved good-fortune.
Man is the only animal that laughs and weeps; for he is the only animal that is struck with the difference between what things are and what they ought to be.
Prejudice is the child of ignorance.
The art of life is to know how to enjoy a little and to endure very much.
The truly proud man knows neither superiors nor inferiors. The first he does not admit of; the last he does not concern himself about.
There are no rules for friendship. It must be left to itself. We cannot force it any more than love.
To be capable of steady friendship or lasting love, are the two greatest proofs, not only of goodness of heart, but of strength of mind. We must overact our part in some measure, in order to produce any effect at all. Without the aid of prejudice and custom, I should not be able to find my way across the room.

Hazlitt, William (1778-1830)
A strong passion for any object will ensure success, for the desire of the end will point out the means. Fashon is the abortive issue of vain ostentation and exclusive egotism: it is haughty, trifling, affected, servile, despotic, mean and ambitious, precise and fantastical, all in a breath - tied to no rule, and bound to conform to every whim of the minute. Prosperity is a great teacher; adversity a greater. When a thing ceases to be a subject of controversy, it ceases to be a subject of interest. The Selected Writings of William Hazlitt
The Pickering Masters 9 Volume Set Editor: Duncan Wu
Consulting Editors: David Bromwich Stanley Jones Roy Park and Tom Paulin - with an introduction by Tom Paulin While acknowledging the scope of P P Howe's Centenary Edition of Hazlitt's complete works, Duncan Wu is swift to demonstrate the difference in his approach and use of copy texts. Howe took as copy text a set by Waller and Glover published 1902 6, thus perpetuating the minor errors and editorial idiosyncrasies of the earlier edition.
Duncan Wu, Introduction to the edition The new edition takes all copy texts from early printed sources, collated with lifetime editions and manuscripts. We do not claim to supersede Howe, but wish to complement, and supplement, him. The new edition thus succeeds in its aim of providing today's Hazlitt scholars with a selection of highly accurate resource texts, further enhanced by editorial matter from eminent academics. The set is fit to stand alone as a primary resource in any library which does not have an older Hazlitt edition, and also has a place beside Howe as an authoritative, up-to-date collection, indispensable to modern research.

MARGARET HAZLITT (1770-1841)
"Recollections, 1835-38." Manuscript diary, inscribed "To my good friends Mr. and Mrs. Johns . . . Crediton December 10,1836." Margaret Hazlitt's recollections of her literary family, written for the information and instruction of her nephew William Hazlitt (1811-1893), cover the period from 1737 to about 1812. She compiled information on her father William Hazlitt (1737-1820), and her brothers William Hazlitt (1778-1830) and John Hazlitt (1767-1837) from family papers and her own recollections, as well as those of her mother. The diary is of great interest for its account of the origins and history of the Hazlitt family and its detailed description of the visit of the Reverend William Hazlitt and his family to North America from 1783 to 1787. Margaret Hazlitt's journal is the sole source of material on the early years of her brother, essayist and critic William Hazlitt, and a valuable record of conditions in the United States immediately after the American Revolution. The text, edited by Ernest J. Moyne, was published by the University of Kansas Press in 1967.
