COMPOSERS
FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN
Born: March 31, 1732. Rohrao, Austria
Died: May 31, 1809. Vienna, Austria
In his own words...

"My Prince was always satisfied with my works. I not only had the encouragement of constant approval but as conductor of an orchestra I could make experiments, observe what produced an effect and what weakened it, and... improve, alter, make additions, or omissions, and be as bold as I pleased." Austrian composer. Part of the so-called Viennese School, and an important influence on both Mozart and Beethoven.
Our image of the composer as an "artist," concerned with doing only what he or she wants to, is rooted in the nineteenth century. Composers of previous periods did not often have that luxury, but Franz Joseph Haydn did. Most of his creative life was spent in the service of the Esterházy family, writing pieces for their needs and desires. For example, he composed over 125 trios for the baryton an instrument something like a viola da gamba simply because it was the instrument that Prince Nikolaus played.
Surprisingly, these seeming restrictions, compounded by his frequent sojourns to the Esterházy summer palace at Esterháza (far removed from the musical center of Vienna) did little to dampen Haydn's creativity. Instead, he stated that this isolation and his ability to work daily with the musicians he was writing for was a perfect situation. Nor did it diminish his fame. By the 1780s, his music had been published all over Europe, and he was well-regarded in the music world. Because of this, he was invited to various cities and commissioned to write musical pieces for premieres in those cities. Most notable are the six symphonies he wrote for the Concerts Spirituels in Paris (Nos.82-87, called his "Paris" symphonies) and the twelve he wrote for the concert promoter Johann Peter Salomon in London (Nos.93-104, called the "London" symphonies). His final works, mostly sacred music for his patron, culminated in two large oratorios

(Franz) Joseph Haydn
Austrian composer. He was one of six children born to Mathias Haydn (a wheelwright and civil servant) and Anna Maria Koller in Lower Austria. His parents, wanting to prepare him for the priesthood, sent him in 1738 to a church school in nearby Haitiburg. There Haydn took his first formal instruction in music. When Georg Reutter, the newly installed music director at St. Stephen's Cathedral, Vienna, came recruiting, the young Haydn was recommended for the choir. Upon reaching the choir's minimum age of eight, Haydn was invited to Vienna.
At St. Stephen's Haydn received instruction in voice, violin, and keyboard, but little general education except for a smattering of Latin. In 1745 he was joined there by his brother Michael , and almost immediately the gifted younger sibling assumed the elder's position as soloist. Passing out of the limelight probably encouraged Haydn in his natural bent for composition, but he received little help: Reutter, himself a professional composer, gave the youngster only two lessons. As Haydn's voice changed, his position as a chorister became increasingly untenable. In late 1749 he was dismissed peremptorily over a practical joke.
Taking an attic room next door to St. Michael's Church, he made ends meet by giving violin and keyboard lessons, working as a free-lance musician in churches, and performing in (and sometimes composing for) groups playing the open-air evening serenades so popular in Vienna. At the same time he began an intensive study of counterpoint (using the writings of

A Career at Esterháza
T
Evaluation
H aydn was prolific in nearly all genres, vocal and instrumental, sacred and secular. Many of his works were unknown beyond the walls of Esterháza, most notably the 125 trios and other assorted pieces featuring the baryton, a hybrid string instrument played by Prince Miklós. Most of Haydn's 19 operas and marionette operettas were written to accommodate the talents of the Esterháza company as well as the tastes of his prince. Haydn freely admitted the superiority of the operas of his young friend Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. In other categories, however, his works circulated widely, and his influence was profound. The 107 symphonies and 68 string quartets that span his career are proof of his ever-fresh approach to thematic materials and form, as well as of his mastery of instrumentation. His 62 piano sonatas and 43 piano trios document a growth from the easy elegance suitable for the home music making of amateurs to the public virtuosity of his late works.
Haydn's productivity is matched by his inexhaustible originality. His manner of turning a simple tune or motive into unexpectedly complex developments was admired by his contemporaries as innovative. Dramatic surprise, often turned to humorous effect, is characteristic of his style, as is a fondness for folklike melodies. A writer of Haydn's day described the special appeal of his music as “popular artistry,” and indeed his balance of directness and bold experiment transformed instrumental expression in the 18th century.

He also contributed greatly to most other instrumental forms. In 1759 Haydn was appointed music director of the small musical establishment of Count Morzin. This post, which he filled for almost thirty years, was ideal for Haydn because it gave him the opportunity to work with a group of fine musicians. During his years at the Esterházy country estate, Haydn met many Viennese artists including Wolfgang Mozart The death of Prince Nicholas in 1790 left Haydn free to come and go as he pleased and he accepted a contract to appear in London where he was hailed as a genius. Mozart is said to have begged him not to go to England because he spoke so few languages to which Haydn replied: "The language I speak is understood the world over". Haydn retired to Vienna and died there during the French occupation of the city.

Joseph Haydn (1732 - 1809)
Background

Franz Joseph Haydn was born in Rohrau, Austria, in 1732, the son of a wheelwright who was also an amateur harpist and singer. Joseph showed early musical ability, and possessed a fine singing voice. At age five, he was taken into the care of Johann Mathais Franck, a schoolmaster at Hainburg. At Hainburg, Joseph was taught the violin, clavier, and the rudiments of music. Three years later, his singing was noticed by Karl Georg Reutter, choirmaster at St Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna. Karl took Joseph as a chorister to Vienna, where he stayed for the next nine years, receiving a general education as well as tuition in violin, clavier, and singing.
After his voice broke in 1749, Haydn was dismissed from St Stephens. For the next eight years, he scraped a living in Vienna by composing and teaching, and became acquainted with several prominent figures in Viennese music circles. In 1759, he acquired his first steady job as musical director in the household of a Bohemian nobleman, Count Ferdinand Maximillian von Morzin. The next year, Haydn married Maria Anna Keller. The union was an unhappy one, and they had no children.
Haydn and Esterhazy
After Count Morzin's orchestra disbanded in 1761 due to financial difficulties, Hadyn was forced to find another position. Fortunately, Prince Paul Anton Esterhazy, whom Haydn had met during his time with Morzin, offered him the job of assistant Kappellmeister of his orchestra in Eisenstadt.
