Introduction
Print Preview of Section Haydn, Joseph (1732-1809), Austrian composer, recognized as a dominant force in the development of the musical style of the classical era (circa 1750-circa 1820). Of humble origins, Haydn was born in the village of Rohrau, near Vienna, on March 31, 1732. When eight years old he was accepted into the choir school of Saint Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna, where he received his only formal education. Dismissed from the choir at the age of 17, he spent the next several years as a struggling freelance musician. He studied on his own the standard textbooks on counterpoint and took occasional lessons from the noted Italian singing master and composer Nicola Porpora. In 1755 Haydn was engaged briefly by Baron Karl Josef von F¼rnberg, for whom he apparently composed his first string quartets. A more substantial position followed in 1759, when he was hired as music director by Count Ferdinand Maximilian von Morzin. Haydn's marriage in 1760 to Maria Anna Keller proved to be unhappy as well as childless.

Joseph Haydn
Born of staunch Catholic parents at Rohrau Austria 1 April, 1732 ; died at Gumpendorf, Vienna 31 May, 1809 . He began his great musical career in the choir-school of St. Stephen's, Vienna . For nine years he was a chorister there, and yielded his place as solo-boy to his younger brother Michael when the inevitable signs of change appeared in his voice. During these years he manifested an extraordinary passion for music, availing himself of every opportunity to improve his knowledge of the art. He was enabled to pursue his musical studies. At this time he came under the influence of Emanuel Bach, Dittersdorf, and Porpora, who may be said to have been his principal masters, although the credit of his remarkable achievements must be given rather to his own incessant industry than to any particular instruction. The year 1756 found Haydn so well informed in the various branches of his art that he began to be ranked among the first music-masters of Vienna . In 1759 he accepted the appointment of vice-capellmeister to Count Morzin, a Bohemian nobleman, who maintained an orchestra at his country-house. His contract with this prince brought him into the daily necessity of composing "divertimenti" for the orchestra, thus affording a splendid opportunity for the study of instrumentation. It was at this time that Haydn made the mistake of contracting a loveless marriage with Maria Anna Keller. Had he been more prudent in the choice of a spouse, perhaps his after life might have been free from the suspicions which his relations with other women justify. By temperament he was deeply religious, and gave back to Almighty God, in his compositions for the services of the Church, the talent with which he was so richly endowed.

Rohrau 1732 –
Wenen 1809
Oostenrijks componist
Bach

Franz Joseph Haydn: The string quartet 1732-1809
The string quartet form, developed more than 200 years ago by Franz Joseph Haydn, has been as durable as the lowly but indispensable dinner fork. Think about it. The fork hasn't changed much in two centuries. Oh, it's been made with a variety of materials, and the contours and curlicues come in thousands of designs. But the basic dinner fork is still an easy-to-grip tool with a handle on one end and usually four prongs on the other. It's practical, durable and effective. Similarly, the string quartet is still the durable four-pronged composition Haydn helped design in the 1760s. The term ``string quartet'' actually refers both to a type of composition and the group that plays it. The group consists of two violins, a viola and a cello. The classic format of the quartet-as-composition happens to correspond to the classic format of the symphony - which, not incidentally, was also established primarily by Haydn. The first of a quartet's four movements is usually fast and in sonata form. At its simplest, sonata form introduces a main theme in a certain key and a contrasting theme in a related key; this is called the exposition. The melodies are then stretched and kneaded like bread dough in the development section. Then the themes return pretty much in their original forms, except that both are in the key of the first theme; this is the recapitulation.
