Details Early Music Review 107: 26 (June 2005): "In summary, this set is a very fine achievement indeed, which I will treasure for many years to come." The variety of instruments and outstanding recording quality make this an interesting set, well worth the budget price. However, in direct comparisons I have made of several sonatas, the performances by Staier on three CDs are clearly preferable. Schornsheim plays with mechanical precision, in most cases playing the notes exactly as written. But this is the best complete set of Haydn sonatas to date on historic instruments, and it is easy to listen to disk after disk, unlike the disappointing Brilliant Classics set. UK DE FR JP Haydn.

Detailed Information about Introduction (born Rohrau, 31 March 1732; died Vienna, 31 May 1809) Among the operas from this period are Lo speziale (for the opening of the new house), L'infedeltà delusa (1773) and Il mondo della luna (1777). Operatic activity became increasingly central from the mid-1770s as regular performances came to be given at the new house. It was part of Haydn's job to prepare the music, adapting or arranging it for the voices of the resident singers. In 1779 the opera house burnt down; Haydn composed La fedelta premiata Orlando paladino (1782) and Armida His works of the 1780s that carried his name further afield include piano sonatas, piano trios, symphonies (nos.76-81 were published in 1784-5, and nos.82-7 were written on commission for a concert organization in Paris in 1785-6) and string quartets. His influential op.33 quartets, issued in 1782, were said to be 'in a quite new, special manner': this is sometimes thought to refer to the use of instruments or the style of thematic development, but could refer to the introduction of scherzos or might simply be an advertising device. More quartets appeared at the end of the decade, op.50 (dedicated to the King of Prussia and often said to be influenced by the quartets Mozart The Seven Last Words L'anima del filosofo

Franz Joseph Haydn
Born of staunch Catholic parents at Rohrau, Austria, 1 April, 1732; died at Gumpendorf, Vienna, 31 May, 1809. He began his great musical career in the choir-school of St. Stephen's, Vienna. For nine years he was a chorister there, and yielded his place as solo-boy to his younger brother Michael Almighty God , in his compositions for the services of the Church, the talent with which he was so richly endowed. Freemasons to please his friend Mozart , who was an ardent member; and it is not clear how long he remained in that society. Upon the occasion of his two visits to London (1791 and 1794) he was hailed as the greatest musician of the day, and received marked attention from royalty. The University of Oxford conferred upon him the degree of Doctor of Music. His career in London was brilliant, and his successes signal. Salomon's orchestra was the vehicle he chose to introduce his compositions to the English public, and the twelve symphonies performed under his direction created a profound impression. He left London in 1795, and in January, 1797, moved to Gumpendorf, Vienna, where he died. As a composer, Haydn will always be spoken of with reverence. He was the founder of the Viennese school of composition. His career began at the time when the accepted conventions of the Palestrinesque school of counterpoint had been abandoned as the last word in music. A craving for more liberty of style and greater breadth of conception was felt among the musicians of Haydn's day, and, catering to the growing taste, he built up a school of composition which became so popular, through his contributions and those of

Franz Joseph Haydn
Along with Mozart , they were the greatest composers of the Classical Era. Haydn was born as the Baroque Era was just ending, with Handel writing his operas and massive oratorios in London, Bach in Germany composing his complex masterpieces. And by the time of his death, the world was getting ready for the Romantic Era, created by Haydn's one-time student, Ludwig van Beethoven Born in the small village of Rodrau, Austria, Franz Joseph Haydn grew up in a music-loving family (Joseph's younger brother was a well-known religious composer). When he was a young boy, he was sent to live with his father's cousin, where he learned to play the harpsichord and piano. His church choir singing voice was heard by the music director of St Stephen's Church in Vienna. Absolutely stunned, the choirmaster allowed Haydn to join the choir in Vienna, where Haydn attended church school, studying all the ordinary school subjects, in addition to his composition lessons. As he sang in the choir, Haydn used his clothing money to buy books on composition, and taught himself how to compose. However, his singing career did not last long. At seventeen, his voice broke ("He sounds like a crowing rooster," the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria remarked). Haydn, having the playful, childish attitude, performed many practical jokes on his fellow choirmates. But his last, cutting off the pigtail of another singer, was his excuse to leave the choir, thinking he had no use there with a cracked voice. But now, he was a dropout, with no money, job, or place to live.

Son of a poor wheelwright. As a young boy he had a beautiful singing voice and in 1738 he went to a cousin at Hainburg for musical edutation. There Karl Georg Reutter, choirmaster at St. Stpehens Cathedral in Vienna, discovered him during a visit and took him to Vienna.
After a few years Reutter was was afraid Haydn would lose his voce and agreed with him that he would be castrated. Just before this took place his father found out and stopped it. But when he was 15 he did lose his voice (empress Maria Theresia even complained about him). In 1749 he was dispelled from the choir.
Haydn was poor, but he started to compose and his compositions became popular. From 1761 onwards he was employed by the Esterhazy family and after the death of Gregor Werner he became musical director of the Esterhazy orchestra. Around 1768 he was influenced by the Sturm und Drang (storm and stress) movement.
In 1773 Maria Theresia visited the Eszterhaza palace and this time she was pleased with him and gave him an expensive gift. In 1782 he wrote the opera Orlando Paladino which was his most famous work during his own lifetime.

20. Joseph Haydn And The Classical Era
Franz Joseph Haydn (17321809) was born into an ordinary Austrian family.Haydn was blessed with an unusually long life for someone of his time,

by Charles K. Moss, M.M.Ed., M.Mus.
It is ironic that art music in the royal courts of Europe reached a peak of creative expression during the final period in which monarchs in many European countries wielded absolute power. But the Classical Period (1750-1825) was just such a time. The Classical Era was the final historical period of the "patronage system" in which musicians worked as servants to powerful noblemen. During this time three great revolutions took place: the American Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Industrial Revolution. Classical Period music was the "swan song" of autocratic powers among most European nobles, and it was the era that gave birth to the great democracies of the New World.
Some of the important historical events of this period include Benjamin Franklin's discoveries of electricity, the emergence of factories using water and steam powered machinery, Napoleon's ultimate defeat at Waterloo, the first steamship crossing of the Atlantic, the discovery of medical vaccination, and the invention of the cotton gin. At the same time these events were taking place, a music of great elegance, refinement, and beauty was being created by resident composers in the courts of European aristocracy.
Musicians moved away from the heavily ornamented Baroque styles and embraced a clean, uncluttered style they thought reminiscent of Classical Greek art. Noble patrons were demanding an impersonal, but tuneful and elegant music. Dances such as the minuet and the gavotte were provided in the forms of entertaining serenades and divertimenti. At this time the Austrian capital of Vienna became the musical center of Europe, and works of the period are often referred to as being in the "Viennese style." There are those who would deny that a "Viennese School" of composers ever existed during this epoch, but it is certain that the lives of Haydn and Mozart were closely linked, both through music and through friendship in Vienna. Additionally, Haydn's influence as Beethoven's teacher for a short period is also a fact. So the existence of a "Viennese Classical style" is self-evident.
