KANSAS COLLECTION BOOKS William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas DOUGLAS COUNTY, Part 6 EARLY NEWSPAPERS. During October, 1854, two Kansas Free-state newspapers were established. John and J. L. Speer, the pioneer editors and publishers of Lawrence, arrived in that place, September 29, 1854. Mr. John Speer prepared the copy for the first number of his paper, which was to be called the Kansas Pioneer and took it to the office of the Kansas City Enterprise (Judge Story) to have it printed, according to previous arrangement. On finding it a pronounced Free-state paper, Mr. Story refused to print it, and Mr. Speer then took his copy to the office of the Leavenworth Herald , where he met with a similar experience. He then returned to his old home at Medina, Ohio and issued his paper dated October 15, 1854, from that place, under the name he had selected. Following are a few extracts from the paper: "LAND FOR THE LANDLESS The general interests of the pioneer - the industrious, frugal and honest emigrant who seeks here a home for his family - shall not be neglected. BISHOP STRATON was consecrated lord Bishop of Sodor and Man 25th March, 1892, in York Cathedral. He succeeded Bishop Bardsley, who is now Bishop of Carlisle, and is in receipt of an income of £2,000 gross, and residence, but which, on account of the agricultural depression, has been reduced to £1,650. In the see there are 31 benefices, 14 curates, and 17,210 church sittings.The Bishop has a seat in the House of but no vote. died 1918 MAJOR ROBERT SWAN STEPHEN MAJOR ROBERT SWAN STEPHEN, V.D. J.P., H.K., MA., is the only son of the late John Clowes Stephen, who for 25 years filled the office of second Deemster of Man. Major Stephen graduated at Cambridge, and afterwards was called to the English Bar. He also qualified as a Manx advocate, and has practised in Douglas. In 1881 he was elected to the House of Keys as one of the members for Douglas, and has ever since retained his seat as one of the members for the town. In April, 1896, he was appointed to the mayoralty of Douglas, which had become vacant by the death of the late Mr Alderman Keig. Upon the 9th November, 1896, Major Stephen was unanimously re-elected as mayor. (later served in Boer War SAMUEL WEBB MR. SAMUEL WEBB, Deputy-Mayor of Douglas, was born at Latchford, Cheshire, in the year 1831. Early in life he became connected with the jewellery and fancy goods trade and was for some years engaged in that business at Scarborough along with Mr William Stansfield. In 1858 Mr Webb came to Douglas, and commenced business in a modest way in Strand-street, afterwards in that portion of Duke-street which was swept away to allow of the formation of Victoria-street. His enterprise caused his business to develop by leaps and bounds, until it culminated in the magnificent establishment in Strand-street, known as the Lounge. Nearly seventeen years ago Mr Webb was appointed a member of the board of Town Commissioners for Douglas, and since then be has faithfully and independently served the ratepayers of Douglas at the town board. A Federal judge ruled that, by quietly investing on their own accounts while advising the Russian government, Harvard professor Shleifer and his Moscow-based assistant Jonathan Hay had conspired to defraud the US Agency for International Development (USAID), which had been paying their salary. Hay was faulted for violating three counts of the False Claims Act, Shleifer for one, with two other counts against him pending a possible jury trial on what it means to have been "assigned" to Russia under the contract's terms. Unless, of course, you are a lawyer. This has appeared to have happened with a ruling by the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals in Seattle, Washington. In a ruling on July 20, Federal District Judge Richard Cebull “vacated” a hearing scheduled for July 27. From the information that I have received, the hearing was to deal with why the 9th Court chose to overturn Cebull’s preliminary injunction against the USDA. The injunction had been granted based on a lawsuit brought by the beef cattle producer group, R-CALF. They wanted the USDA to be restrained from re-opening the Canadian border for the importation of feeder cattle and also slaughter cattle.

And who was it that said 15 years ago that no one would ever attend a mid-summer show in July? They said, “It is too hot to have a summer show in Georgia.” In a change from past shows, the showing of older heifers has been eliminated. That means that this past years show heifers will no longer be eligible to show. Now, the Georgia Junior Beef Futurity will now be a true prospect show. Even with the elimination of the older heifers, it has been reported by the show organizers that this year’s show has attracted a record number of entries. As of June 20, the show had received 722 entries from 409 exhibitors.

I'm considered "a" founder. Not the founder. I was the first editor to start working an IGN site, the first to launch an IGN site (N64.com), and the most senior of all IGN editors, having been at IGN since August 1996.
