  • A Bio-bibliographical note about Nathaniel Hawthorne
"Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-64) was born at Salem in Massachusetts to one of New England's oldest Puritan familes. He read extensively and was entered for Bowdoin College in Maine in 1821. While he was here he began writing Fanshawe , an immature novel whose hero resembles the author. "After his graduation in 1825 Hawthorne returned to Salem where he began writing historical sketches. In 1828 he published Fanshawe anonymously, but later regretted the decision. The novel went largely unnoticed. "His fortunes began to improve in 1837 with the publication of Twice-Told Tales which sold over a thousand copies in the first twelve months. In the same year he also fell in love with Sophia Peabody whom he later married. He was not able to earn his living by writing alone and so accepted a position in the Boston Custom House in January 1839 and later as Surveyor for the District of Salem, from which he was dismissed in 1849. This led to a period of hardship for Hawthorne and his family but with the warm reception of The Scarlet Letter in 1850, he was able to move his family to their own home.

      Abstract:
The critique of gendered moral behavior in this Digby saint play bears witness to late medieval consciousness of attributes and responsibilities associated with particular status positions and social roles. Focusing on the scene of Mary Magdalene's seduction, this essay argues that the play employs late medieval discourses of status and courtesy, made familiar through conduct literature, to foreground the sociology of Mary Magdalene's transgression, linking her moral demise not exclusively with feminine moral culpability but also with deceptions and instabilities of the social order. The play's preoccupation with social identity attests to late medieval vernacular theater's broader engagement with the spiritual and material formation of subjectivities in premodern England. Hawthorne, Nathaniel (1804-1864)
In 1846 verscheen een bundel korte verhalen onder de titel “Mosses from an Old Manse”.

    The Great Carbuncle

    by Nathaniel Hawthorne (1804-1864)
The adventurers, therefore, exchanged hospitable greetings, and welcomed one another to the hut, where each man was the host, and all were the guests of the whole company. They spread their individual supplies of food on the flat surface of a rock, and partook of a general repast; at the close of which, a sentiment of good fellowship was perceptible among the party, though repressed by the idea, that the renewed search for the Great Carbuncle must make them strangers again in the morning. Seven men and one young woman, they warmed themselves together at the fire, which extended its bright wall along the whole front of their wigwam. As they observed the various and contrasted figures that made up the assemblage, each man looking like a caricature of himself, in the unsteady light that flickered over him, they came mutually to the conclusion, that an odder society had never met, in city or wilderness, on mountain or plain.
Lastly, there was a handsome youth in rustic garb, and by his side a blooming little person, in whom a delicate shade of maiden reserve was just melting into the rich glow of a young wife's affection. Her name was Hannah and her husband's Matthew; two homely names, yet well enough adapted to the simple pair, who seemed strangely out of place among the whimsical fraternity whose wits had been set agog by the Great Carbuncle.
In a pause of the conversation the wearer of the prodigious spectacles looked round upon the party, making each individual, in turn, the object of the sneer which invariably dwelt upon his countenance.

On this day in 1850, Nathaniel Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter was published. Hawthorne's claim of having discovered a red letter 'A' in the Salem Custom-House was a literary device, but two ancestors had been forced to wear forehead bands identifying their incestuous conduct, another had been a judge at the witch trials, and Salem itself, in his experience, was a punishment. top of page SELECTED WORKS BY THIS AUTHOR Collected Novels: Fanshawe, The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, The Blithedale Romance, The Marble Faun

    Nathaniel Hawthorne
Biography Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts, a descendant of Puritan ancestors, including one of the judges of the Salem witchcraft trials. He graduated from Bowdoin College in Maine, where he had become friends with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and later president of the United States Franklin Pierce, and then returned to Salem to write. Hawthorne's early endeavors were mostly short stories, but even though he published many of these tales in magazines and literary annuals, they always appeared anonymously and did little to advance his literary career. Only when he published these stories in collections, as in Twice-Told Tales (1837) and Mosses from an Old Manse (1846), did Hawthorne become a recognized literary force. In 1842 he married Sophia Peabody of Salem, and Hawthorne's primary focus turned to family. His masterpiece, The Scarlet Letter , appeared in 1850 and became an international sensation, with critics in Great Britain and the United States proclaiming him the finest American romance writer. Other novels by Hawthorne include The House of Seven Gables The Blithedale Romance (1852), and
