A sister raised him after he was orphaned as a young child and he faced a difficult upbringing in a world where African Americans were often challenged to find adequate encouragement in education and at work. He attended the acclaimed, all-black Dunbar High School in Washington, D.C. where he showed promise in math and science and developed a sense of self-confidence that propelled him toward his dreams. Hawkins pursued a degree in chemical engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, from where he graduated in 1932. He went on to complete a master's degree in chemistry at Howard University, and from there, a doctoral degree at McGill University in Montreal. His specialization was cellulose chemistry. At Bell Labs, Hawkins conducted research on polymers, specifically thermal and oxidative stabilization of polymers for telecommunications. Up until about 1950, telephone cables were coated with a costly, as well as toxic, lead-based material. This was replaced with polyethelene, introduced after World War II by the British, but these early plastic coatings became brittle and breakable very quickly in sunlight. With partner Victor Lanza, Hawkins invented a polymer in 1956 that had all the desired characteristics. This polymer was essentially a plastic containing a chemical additive composed of carbon and antioxidants that prevents the material from deteriorating, even in severe hot or cold weather conditions. The new material, today known as “plastic cable sheath,” went into production in the 1960s and became widely used as an inexpensive, durable, and safe coating for telecommunications wire. It is still used today to protect fiber optic cable.

    http://www.chemheritage.org/EducationalServices/chemach/pop/wlh.html

For years the communications industry has been one of the largest users of polymer products, especially for wire and cable coatings. But exposure to sunlight and extreme temperatures causes these coatings to deteriorate, a problem that Walter Lincoln Hawkins (1911–1992) and Vincent L. Lanza of Bell Laboratories tackled in 1956. They first developed a special plastics additive that inhibits oxidation of the polymeric material. Hawkins designed a laboratory test using infrared spectroscopy to predict the weatherability of a plastic surface, working also with Maureen G. Chan. A native of Washington, D.C., Hawkins was orphaned at an early age and raised by a sister. Yet in the middle of the Depression he found enough family support and personal confidence to disregard the advice of well-meaning teachers who were convinced that an African American could never become a chemical engineer. Hawkins headed to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute to complete his engineering degree and then went on to receive a master's degree in chemistry at Howard University and a doctorate at McGill University in Montreal, where he specialized in cellulose chemistry. After a postdoctoral fellowship at Columbia University he was hired in 1942 by Bell Laboratories, where he was the first African American scientist on the staff. He eventually became head of plastics chemistry research and development and assistant director of the Chemical Research Laboratory. Hawkins was an active leader in efforts to expand the nation's pool of scientific talent, as first chairman of the American Chemical Society's Project SEED (Summer Educational Experience for the Economically Disadvantaged)—created to promote chemistry among economically disadvantaged youth—and as a board member of several educational institutions. He was honored on several occasions for this work and for his contributions to polymer science, including the award of the National Medal of Technology, presented to him by the President of the United States just two months before his death.

    Walter Hawkins Biography
    Walter Hawkins
    Artist: Walter Hawkins
    Born:
Styles: Contemporary Gospel Black Gospel Traditional Gospel The younger brother of gospel vocalist and choir director Edwin Hawkins, Bishop Walter Hawkins is one of gospel's most successful performers. The leader of the Love Center Choir, Hawkins has led the group to two Dove Awards, presented by the Gospel Music Association, and two Grammy nominations. The group's debut album, Going up Yonder, released in 1975, spent several months on the Top 40 gospel chart compiled by Billboard. Their second album, Love Alive II, sold nearly three hundred thousand copies. This was surpassed by their third album, Love III, which topped the million sales mark. They continued this success with Love Alive IV, released in 1989, which remained in the top position on the gospel charts for 39 weeks.
Hawkins gave very little thought to a career in music until 1968. In an attempt to raise money to send the Ephesian Church of God in Christ's youth choir, directed by Edwin Hawkins, to a convention in Washington, D.C., Hawkins helped the group record an album, Let Us Go into the House of the Lord. Although initial plans called for the album to be sold locally, it became an international success when a single, "Oh, Happy Day," sold more than a million copies. The group subsequently toured as the Edwin Hawkins Singers.
