William Henry Harrison, his grandfather, was the first governor of the Indiana Territory, congressman, senator, and the ninth President of the United States. After graduation in 1852, he studied law for two years with a firm in Cincinnati, Ohio. In 1853, Harrison married Caroline Scott. A year later, the Harrisons' moved to the growing city of Indianapolis, Indiana. Harrison opened a law practice in Indianapolis and in 1855 joined the firm of William Wallace (later Civil War general and father of Lew Wallace). In 1862, Harrison was asked by Indiana Governor Oliver P. Morton to recruit men for the 70th Indiana Voluntary Infantry. Harrison fought in many battles including the battles of Peach Tree Creek and Resaca, Georgia. By the end of the war Harrison was a Brigadier General.

President Benjamin Harrison
American History Study Guide Caroline Harrison An accomplished pianist and painter, Caroline "Carrie" Harrison blended her interest in the arts with the growing sense of national history that accompanied her husband's presidential administration. Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901; see entry in volume 3) was called the "centennial president," having taken office one hundred years after the first American president, George Washington (1732-1799; see entry in volume 1). Carrie Harrison supported the founding of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a group that helps preserve items and places of historical significance, and served as the group's first president. She applied the group's historical service to the White House: Among other accomplishments, she designed the china pattern used for place settings during the Harrison presidency and gathered examples of dinnerware from past administrations. The china collection has since grown into one of the more visually informative displays on exhibit at the White House.

Benjamin Harrison Benjamin Harrison, (1833-1901), 23d PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES. Inaugurated 100 years after George WASHINGTON, Benjamin Harrison was known as the "Centennial President." He inherited a distinguished name. His grandfather, William Henry HARRISON, was the 9th president of the United States. In colonial Virginia five successive generations of Benjamin Harrisons (1632-1791) compiled almost identical records as gentlemen of education and wealth, burgesses, councillors, and militia colonels. Fearless independence, a strong sense of justice, and high intelligence marked Harrison as a soldier, lawyer, humanitarian, and statesman-president. Ranked today as an average chief executive, in his own era he compiled a strong record of constitutional government that enabled the country to approach world power with prudence and caution. Compared with strong, appealing leaders like JACKSON, LINCOLN, and ROOSEVELT, Harrison was greater as a man than as a president.. Early Life and Education President Benjamin Harrison's father was John Scott Harrison (1809-1878), the only American to be the son of one president and the father of another. After college, John Scott Harrison managed a 2,000-acre (800-meter) family estate at North Bend, Ohio. In 1831, his first wife having died, he married Elizabeth Irwin, from Pennsylvania. The new bride eventually reared nine children.

Name: Benjamin Harrison Life Span: Term Wife: Caroline Harrison BEFORE PRESIDENCY Benjamin Harrison was born on August 20, 1833 on a farm in North Bend Ohio. He attended Miami University in Ohio and read law in Cincinnati. He was the grandson of former president William Henry Harrison. Harrison then moved to Indianapolis, where he campaigned for the Republican Party and practiced law. In 1853, he married Caroline Lavinia Scott. Harrison was nominated for presidency on the eighth ballot at the 1888 Republican Convention. He was one of the first people to conduct a “front-porch” campaign, which was delivering short speeches to delegations that visited him in Indianapolis. Democrats made jokes about Harrison’s height, calling him “Little Ben”. Republicans replied by saying that he was big enough to wear the hat of his grandfather, “Old Tippercanoe”, since his grandfather was a former president. In the presidential election, Harrison went up against Grover Cleveland. Even though Harrison received less popular votes than Cleveland, he received more of the votes that mattered, the Electoral College. DURING PRESIDENCY Harrison faced a big problem while in office, the tariff issue. High tariff rates in effect made a surplus of money in the Treasury. Advocates of low-tariff said that surplus was hurting business. To cope with the Treasury surplus, the tariff was removed from imported raw sugar, and sugar growers within the United States were given two cents a pound bounty on their production. Harrison had successfully gotten rid of the surplus. However, after going up against former president Cleveland, Harrison lost.

Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901) was the only grandson of a president who also became president. He defeated President Grover Cleveland in 1888, but Cleveland regained the presidency by beating Harrison in 1892.
Harrison's grandfather was William Henry Harrison, the hero of the Battle of Tippecanoe. Both Harrisons ran for the presidency two times, winning once and losing once. Before being elected president, both had been successful army commanders and had served in the United States Senate. Benjamin Harrison won the presidency with the help of a Republican campaign song called "Grandfather's Hat Fits Ben."
Harrison's presidency
Harrison did more than any other president to increase respect for the flag of the United States. By his order, the flag waved above the White House and other government buildings. Harrison also urged that the flag be flown over every school in the land.
