Benjamin Harrison
Benjamin Harrison was born in North Bend, Ohio, a small community west of Cincinnati. He was the son of a Whig Congressman and the grandson of former president William Henry Harrison . In 1854, Harrison graduated with honors from Miami University of Ohio and briefly considered entering the ministry, but chose instead to study law in Cincinnati. He later opened a practice in Indianapolis where he hoped also to launch a political career. Breaking with his father's old line political ties, Harrison joined the new Republican Party and worked on behalf of John C. Frémont in 1856 and Abraham Lincoln in 1860. Harrison commanded Indiana volunteers in the Civil War and was promoted to brigadier general following his heroic leadership in the Atlanta campaign . He took a furlough during 1864 to campaign for pro-Union candidates in Indiana, a fairly common practice during that era. Following the war, Harrison returned to the law and frequently spoke out on current political topics, notably his support for the Radical Republican Reconstruction plan . In 1876, he ran for governor of Indiana and lost. In 1881, he was elected to the U.S. Senate by the state legislature; he was noted for his ardent support of Civil War

HARRISON, BENJAMIN
, twenty-third president of the United States. After graduating from Miami University in Ohio, his birthplace, this grandson of President William Henry Harrison became a lawyer in Indianapolis. A staunch Republican, he fought for the Union and emerged from the Civil War a brigadier general. Despite an iceberglike personality and the loss of the gubernatorial campaign of 1876, he became Indiana's leading Republican. Although undistinguished during a term in the U.S. Senate, Harrison, as an inoffensive war hero from a crucial state, won the Republican nomination in 1888 with the help of James G. Blaine's endorsement. Because his supporters were strategically located, Harrison was elected by a majority in the electoral college even though the incumbent, Grover Cleveland, received more popular votes. Harrison influenced legislation and was an efficient executive, but his lackluster personality made his administration seem colorless. In conjunction with the Republican-controlled "Billion Dollar Congress" of 1890, his administration was remarkably productive. To wipe out the $100 million surplus of revenues over expenditures, Congress passed a generous Dependent and Disability Pension Act and the protectionist McKinley Tariff, which raised rates higher than ever before. Responding to pressure from the West, Congress approved the Sherman Silver Purchase Act, which required that the government buy 4.5 million ounces of silver each month and pay for it with Treasury certificates. Harrison managed the inflationist tendency of this legislation by redeeming the certificates in gold. At his request and to make good a plank in the Republican party's 1888 platform, Congress also passed the Sherman Antitrust Act, which was by far the most influential law passed during his administration.

, twenty-third president of the United States . Born in North Bend, Ohio, Harrison served as a brigadier general in the Civil War. Elected to the U.S. Senate from Indiana in 1881, Harrison was chosen by the Republicans to oppose incumbent Grover Cleveland in the election of 1888 . Although Cleveland won the most popular votes, Harrison received a majority of electoral votes, becoming the only grandson of a president (William Henry Harrison) to become president. Harrison in office supported the protective McKinley tariff and the Sherman Anti-Trust Act . Again opposed by Cleveland in the election Of 1892 , he lost his reelection bid. In 1899 he represented Venezuela in arbitration of the Venezuela boundary dispute with Great Britain.

Benjamin Harrison
Twenty-third President (1889-1893)
Much like his presidential grandfather William Henry Harrison, Benjamin Harrison did not owe his White House nomination of 1888 to lustrous performances in lesser political offices. Rather, he was a safe, clean, and loyal Republican. That, along with his kinship with a former President, seemed to be quite enough to earn him his party's endorsement. Known as the "iceberg," Harrison was unusually detached from the normal hurly-burly of politics, and in domestic matters, his presidential style was essentially passive. As a result, he took little part in shaping the major congressional measures of his administration, including the landmark Sherman Antitrust Act. In foreign policy, however, Harrison exercised more influence, and his enthusiasm for a stronger American posture in the international arena foreshadowed this country's emergence as a world power after 1900. This drawing of Harrison is thought to be a preliminary sketch for a large formal portrait by Eastman Johnson, which hangs today in the White House.

Benjamin Harrison, 1833-1901
America's 23rd president Benjamin Harrison, grandson of president William Henry Harrison, served between the 2 terms of Grover Cleveland. Harrison had the distinctions of being the only grandson of a US president to become Chief Executive, the last Civil War general to serve as president, and was the shortest of America's presidents. Infamous in his day for his "billion dollar congress" Harrison died in 1901 at the age of 67. Born on August 20th, 1833 in North Bend, Ohio Benjamin Harrison was the son of farmer turned statesman John Scott Harrison, a US Senator, and his wife, Elizabeth Neal. Harrison's grandfather was William Henry Harrison, the famed frontiersman whose own presidential campaign motto had been "Tippecanoe and Tyler, Too!" for his famed Tippecanoe exploits. Benjamin lived on his father's Ohio farm and was a quiet and studious youth, who was accepted at the Miami University at Oxford, Ohio. While a student Harrison met the daughter of Dr. John Scott, the founder of the nearby Oxford Female Institute. Caroline Lavinia Scott, a fragile, outgoing female scholar charmed Harrison, and he proposed marriage soon after meeting the petite Ohioan (Harrison was himself barely 5'6" tall). The couple wed shortly after Harrison graduated college with honors, and by the time he completed 2 years of law and passed the Ohio bar had a son and daughter. Harrison moved his family to Indianapolis
