Benjamin Harrison was a Civil War general and a Republican senator from Indiana before defeating incumbent Grover Cleveland in the 1888 presidential election. His presidency was undistinguished, but his family tree was not: Harrison's great-grandfather was a signer of the Declaration of Independence; his grandfather was William Henry Harrison , ninth president of the United States; and his father was a congressman from Ohio. In a try for a second term, Harrison was defeated by Grover Cleveland in a rematch of their 1888 race. Harrison's first wife, Caroline, died less than a month before Harrison lost his reelection bid... He was the 23rd president. FOUR GOOD LINKS

[Letter] 1891 December 14, Washington (D.C.) [to] Mrs. Jamie H. Davenport / Benjamin Harrison. Harrison, Benjamin, 1833-1901. The White House. 1891 December 14. [1] leaf. 17 x 22 cm. folded to 17 x 11 cm. envelope. Letterhead reads "Executive Mansion, Washington." See a biography of Harrison's papers and a guide to research collections of his papers (http://bioguide.congress.gov/scripts/biodisplay.pl?index=H000263). See also his official White House biography (http://www.whitehouse.gov/history/presidents/bh23.html). Harrison writes to thank Davenport for the kind invitation, but he cannot get away to come to Minneapolis because he is "very busy." This letter was written during Harrison's term as the 23rd President of the United States; his administration is often remembered for policies such as the Sherman Anti-Trust Act which sought to guard against the formation of monopolies. Before assuming the Presidency, Harrison fought in the Civil War, and also served as a Senator from Indiana; he conducted an unsuccessful bid for reelection to the Presidency in 1892. "I knew that my staying up would not change the [election] result if I were defeated, while if elected I had a hard day ahead of me. So I thought a night's rest was best in any event." The bud of victory is always in the truth. Great lives never go out; they go on. I pity the man who wants a coat so cheap that the man or woman who produces the cloth will starve in the process.
