Home About Policies Services ... Links Robert Harris Chapman Collection Biography/History Robert Harris Chapman [1919-2000], was born in Highland Park, Illinois. He attended Princeton University and in 1941 graduated with a degree in English. He served as a Lieutenant in the U. S. Navy during World War II and his wartime duty was in Morocco. In 1950 he started his career at Harvard University, where he retired in 1989. His courses were popular with undergraduates and included Modern Drama, Playwriting, Theatre History, British Theatre of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries, and George Bernard Shaw. He became a Professor of English Literature, was an accomplished playwright, a theatrical consultant, and Director of the Loeb Drama Center at Harvard University. He was a colleague and long-time friend of Robert Penn Warren. This collection was purchased in 2003. Scope and Contents This collection contains eight items, in two file folders. There are seven letters from Robert Penn Warren to Robert Harris Chapman, and one poem by Robert Penn Warren. Correspondence - Incoming June 1, 1958

Haig-Brown, Roderick Langmere, 1908-1976 Roderick Haig-Brown fonds. - [ca. 1926]-1976. 20.4 m of textual records. Roderick Haig-Brown, author, environmentalist and Justice of the Peace, was born in Sussex, England. He moved to B.C. in 1927, where he worked as a logger, trapper, guide and fisherman. He returned to England in 1929 where he remained until 1931 to publish his first book, Silver . In 1934 Haig-Brown and his wife Ann moved to Campbell River, B.C. and purchased their now famous residence in 1936. Haig-Brown's writings include books, articles and short stories about fish and fishing, books for and about boys and books on Canadian history. Haig-Brown was not only a writer but also a magistrate and judge of the juvenile court of Campbell River and Chancellor of the University of Victoria from 1970 to 1973. The fonds consists of biographical material relating to Roderick Haig-Brown, correspondence (1928-1974), and manuscripts of prose, articles, speeches, and broadcasts by Haig-Brown and others (ca. 1926-1976). The fonds also includes clippings of prose, articles, speeches, pamphlets and subject files. This was a historic film in many ways. It was the first true science fiction movie in over a decade; the first of George Pal's science fiction and fantasy films; and the first science fiction film which tried to present a cutting edge scientific idea (space travel) in an accurate way. The original script was by Robert Heinlein, based on his 1947 juvenile novel ROCKETSHIP GALILEO (entry).
