Autodidactic Profiles
Self-educated People Who've Made a Difference Millions of people pay a king’s ransom for college tuition to learn what is free for the taking when motivated by a compelling desire to learn. In the movie Good Will Hunting , Will (played by Matt Damon) chides an arrogant Ivy League student for paying a fortune for an education that would be free but for the price of a library card. Although this is absolutely valid, very few people believe it. Instead they are convinced the knowledge they could acquire on their own is secondary to paying a lot of money to an institution which will attest that they have, even if they cheated their way through the process. Specialness and eliteness can be purchased, but real knowledge has to be acquired through genuine effort. Practicality aside, the psychology of Internet II is yet another attempt to fashion walls around information, which loses its value if it can’t be parceled out. We need colleges and universities just as we need teachers and people who are enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge with others. But the idea that the only learning respectable enough for economic compensation comes from institutions, which treat it as a scarce resource, is patently absurd. The people named in the following list demonstrate this beyond doubt.

Henry Louis "Hank" Aaron (b. 1934)An outfielder with the Milwaukee (later Atlanta) Braves, Aaron broke Babe Ruth's record in 1974 with his 715th home run, in Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. He remained cool and dignified in the face of the media frenzy surrounding his pursuit of the record, despite receiving countless death threats and bags of hate mail from bigots who felt that Ruth's achievement should never be surpassed by a black man. He retired in 1976 with 755 homers. Henry W. Grady (1850-89)Managing editor of the Atlanta Constitution, Grady preached post-Civil War reconciliation, and he worked passionately to draw Northern capital and diversified industry to the agrarian South. His name is synonymous with the phrase "The New South." Joel Chandler Harris (1848-1908)Called "Georgia's Aesop," he created Uncle Remus, the wise black raconteur of children's fables. His tales of Br'er Rabbit and Br'er Fox were the basis for Disney's delightful animated feature Song of the South.

Welcome to our "Georgia Writers" page
Early on we realized that we had to have some criteria or some definition of who we would include on this page as a "Georgia Writer." And we wanted to be fairly inclusive without going overboard. So we came up with the following
For our purposes a "Georgia Writer" is a published writer who:
  • Was born in the state of Georgia.
  • Lives in the state of Georgia.
  • Writes about the state of Georgia
  • Whether deceased or living, were long time residents of Georgia and whose work reflects this in some way.
  • Writers who have lived in Georgia, who want to be considered Georgia Writers and want to be included on this page. My mother, and business partner, has devoted a great deal of time and research into preparing a text list of Georgia Writers. She has gathered this information from Georgia Libraries, other online sources and sites, and a lot of digging around. This list is posted below in TXT format for anyone to view or download. Please realize that because we draw this information from many sources and often don't have another source with which to verify the information, this list is and will always be a work in progress. If you know of a writer we should include, or know some of our information to be incorrect, PLEASE

    home

back to fables Joel Chandler Harris, an American journalist, is best remembered for his Uncle Remus stories. During his work for a plantation newspaper-owner, Harris became familiar with many of the folktales of the black African plantation workers. He began to write the 'Uncle Remus' stories, which began to appear in the Atlanta Constitution in 1879, and were published in book form in 1880 as Uncle Remus: His Songs and His Sayings . He published many sequels to this, his first collection. The first section of the book consists of tales told by Uncle Remus, an old African, to the small son of the plantation owner. The hero of most of his tales is Brer Rabbit. The most beloved and best known of these tales is How Brer Rabbit Met Brer Tar Baby . Harris retold these tales with great skill and charm, using the dialect of the Georgia plantation worker, which he had studied closely. Harris also wrote several other books for children, including Little Mr. Thimblefinger and His Queer Country (1894) and Wally Wanderoon and His Story-telling Machine The Bishop and the Boogerman (pub. 1909) is his comic novel for children.

Joel Chandler Harris  (1848-1908) is famous for his  creation of Uncle Remus,  Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox, Brer  Bear and other characters as  in Uncle Remus, His Songs  and His Sayings (1880),  Nights with Uncle Remus  (1883), Uncle Remus and His  Friends (1892), The Tar Baby  (1904), Uncle Remus and Brer Rabbit (1906);  edited Uncle Remus's Magazine (1907-08).  Other works included Mingo, and Other  Sketches in Black and White (1884), Free Joe and Other Georgia Sketches (1887), Gabriel  Tolliver (1902). Harris, who had grown up in Georgia during the Civil War, spent a lifetime compiling and  publishing the tales told to him by former slaves. These stories - many of which Harris learned  from an old black man he called "Uncle  George" - were first published as columns in  "The Atlanta Constitution" and were later  syndicated nationwide and published in book  form. Harris's Uncle Remus was a fictitious old slave and philosopher who told entertaining  fables about Br'er Rabbit and other woodland  creatures in a Southern black dialect.
