At Lulworth Cove a Century Back
HAD I but lived a hundred years ago
I might have gone, as I have gone this year,
By Warmwell Cross on to a Cove I know,
And Time have placed his finger on me there: 'You see that man?' I might have looked and said,
'O yes: I see him. One that boat has brought
Which dropped down channel round Saint Alban's Head.
So commonplace a youth calls not my thought.' 'You see that man?' 'Why yes; I told you; yes:
Of an idling town-sort; thin; hair brown in hue;
And as the evening light scants less and less
He looks up at a star, as many do.' 'You see that man?' 'Nay, leave me!' then I plead,
'I have fifteen miles to vamp across the lea, And it grows dark, and I am weary-kneed: I have said the thrid time; yes, that man I see!' 'Good. That man goes to Rome to death, dispair; And no one notes him now but you and I: A hundred years, and the world will follow him there, And bend with reverence where his ashes lie.'

http://www.firstworldwar.com/poetsandprose/hardyt.htm
Updated - Saturday, 11 August, 2001 English poet and regional novelist, whose works depict the imaginary county "Wessex" (=Dorset). Hardy's (1840-1928) career as writer spanned over fifty years. His earliest books appeared when Anthony Trollope (1815-82) wrote his Palliser series, and he published poetry in the decade of T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land. Hardy's work reflected his stoical pessimism and sense of tragedy in human life. "Critics can never be made to understand that that the failure may be greater than the success... To have the strength to roll a stone weighting a hundredweight to the top of a mountain is a success, and to have the strength to roll a stone of then hundredweight only halfway up that mount is a failure. But the latter is two or three times as strong a deed." (Hardy in his diary, 1907) Hardy's own life wasn't similar to his stories. He was born on the Egdon Heath, in Dorset, near Dorchester. His father was a master mason and building contractor. Hardy's mother, whose tastes included Latin poets and French romances, provided for his education. After schooling in Dorchester Hardy was apprenticed to an architect. He worked in an office, which specialized in restoration of churches. In 1874 Hardy married Emma Lavinia Gifford, for whom he wrote 40 years later, after her death, a group of poems known as

http://www.thedorsetpage.com/people/Thomas_Hardy.htm
THOMAS HARDY the great novelist, has made much of Dorset famous as the ‘Hardy’ country, for he was born in the hamlet of Higher Bockhampton on June 2nd, 1840, and thereafter with the exception of five years, lived out his 87 years of life in the county that he loved so much. Both his parents were Dorset stock and he received his early schooling at Lower Bockhampton, and later at Dorchester. He became a pupil to an ecclesiastical architect and at the age of 22 went to London, where he spent five years studying the profession. His heart was, however, always with his pen and poetry was his great love. His first novel, "The Poor Man and the Lady" was accepted for publication in 1869, but on advice he destroyed the manuscript. Two years later, he published "Under the Greenwood Tree", followed by " Far from the Madding Crowd " and for the next twenty years he wrote fiction. After his first two books, there was an air of gloom and pessimism about his work, which in the opinion of many prevented him becoming the greatest of England’s novelists. ln 1898, Hardy was firmly established and was able to devote himself to his poetry. It was then that he published his first Wessex Poems. His great achievement was the dramatic epic on the Napoleonic theme, "The Dynasts", which appeared in three parts in 1903, 1906, 1908.

Professor Suzanne J. Flynn
This course will be devoted to the works of Thomas Hardy (1840-1928). During his lifetime, Hardy published 14 novels, nearly 50 short stories, a 3-volume epic, and nearly 1000 poems. Obviously, one semester will not suffice to cover the depth and breadth of this incredible career. We will, nonetheless, read a representative sampling of Hardy's works in an effort to understand not only his place within literary history, but also the sociological and cultural contexts of the literature.

Thomas Hardy
Thomas Hardy has always been special to me. He writes of the land of my youth and childhood. I too wandered the streets of Casterbridge and the land he wrote of was familiar to me. That familiarity opened my imagination in a way that other writers of that period could never touch. His poetry was unknown to me as a child, it was his prose I read voraciously. It was my loss, and I would have known him far better had I had depth enough to appreciate the manifold layers of his poems. Hardy was born in Higher Bockhampton in Dorset, England where the cottage may still be visted today. He was schooled in nearby Dorchester (Casterbridge). Unsurprisingly, as the countryside there is as beautiful and compelling as any in Englands, he developed a love of nature and a sympathy for animals that stayed with him throughout his life and the influence on his writing is clear. He became an architect and lived in London before returning to his beloved Dorset. It was while living and working in Weymouth (my home town) that he wrote his first published novel, Desperate Remedies. He married twice: firstly to Emma Gifford whom he met in Cornwall and in the twilight of his life to Florence Dugdale. His first marriage lasted until Emma's death although it was not a happy marriage as his last book, Jude the Obscure, reflected.

Name: Thomas Hardy Birth Date: June 2, 1840 Death Date: January 11, 1928 Place of Birth: Higher Bockhampton, Dorset, England Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: writer, author, novelist, poet, dramatist Thomas Hardy Main Biography The works of the English novelist, poet, and dramatist Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) unite the Victorian and modern eras. They reveal him to be a kind and gentle man, terribly aware of the pain human beings suffer in their struggle for life. Thomas Hardy presented the spectacle of England from Napoleonic times to World War I and after. He revealed the changes that overwhelmed Victorian England and made it modern: the decline of Christianity, the shifts from reticence to openness in matters of sex and from an agricultural to a modern economy, and above all the growing sense of the disparity between the enormous universe and tiny man. Hardy was born on June 2, 1840, in Higher Bockhampton in Dorset, which formed part of the "Wessex" of his novels and poems. A small baby, thought at birth to be dead, he became a small man only a little over 5 feet tall. He was taught by his father, a builder, to play the violin, and he often journeyed about the countryside playing for dances and storing .....

Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) Thomas Hardy was born, the first of four children, in Upper Bockhampton, Dorset, on 2 June 1840 - about five months after his parents married. His father, Thomas Snr, was a builder and his mother, Jemima, a former maidservant. His father had played viol (i.e. violin) in the Stinsford Church quire, and his father, Thomas (the Hardys were famous for their originality) had played bass viol (i.e. cello). The quire were kicked out of their jobs by the Rev Shirley at about the time Thomas Hardy Jnr was born, much to Hardy's subsequent disgust - hence the libellous attack on the Rev Maybold in "Under the Greenwood Tree". However Hardy developed a love of music himself, also playing the violin. Thomas trained as an architect. In this role he worked in Dorset before making the move to London. After a few years, however, he returned to a base in Dorset, working in the Dorchester and Weymouth areas as well as the occasional foray further afield. He met Emma Gifford when he was on assignment at the church where her brother-in-law was the incumbent, in St Juliot, Cornwall. They married in London on 17 September, 1874. Both were already well over thirty, and they never had children. His first novel
