Emigrants to Oregon In 1845
compiled by Stephenie Flora

Captains of 1845 St. Joseph Companies:
In early May 1845, the Oregon bound emigrant companies starting from the the St. Joseph, Mo area totaled, according to the St. Joseph paper, 223 wagons, 954 persons, with 545 firearms, 9,425 cattle, and 108 horses and mules. John Clark was hired as pilot for the journey to the junction with the Independence-to-Oregon trail. The elected captains for the companies from the St. Joseph rendezvous were: [1]: Captain William G. T'Vault with [according to Bancroft 61 wagons and 300 persons]. John Waymire was lieutenant and James Allen was sergeant. [2]: Captain Solomon Tetherow with 66 wagons and 293 persons. Hardin D. Martin was lieutenant. They organized under the name "Savannah Oregon Emigrating Society" with Rev. William Helm, chairman and Rev. Lewis Thompson, secretary. Records kept by the company indicate that there were 100 armed men, 293 persons [63 females over 14, 56 under 14, 68 males under 16], 66 wagons, 170 guns and pistols, 1,022 cattle (398 oxen, 624 loose cattle); 74 mules and horses. [3]: Captain Abner Hackleman [note: sometimes confused with son Abram/Abraham Hackleman who came in 1847 *6] with approximately 52 wagons, 214 persons and 666 head of cattle and a few horses. This company organized under the name "New London Emigrating Company".

NOTES
The phrase "rats and mice, and such small deer" is quoted (more or less) from King Lear , III, iv, 151, reading "But mice and rats and such small deer have been in Tom's food for seven long year." An archaic meaning of "deer" was a small mammal.
Dr. S, who was remarkably handsome, according to Chapter 1, appears to be Dr. John W. Sandford, Jr, Assistant Surgeon, in Chapter 11.
Paul and Virginia refer to characters in a romantic novel Paul et Virginie , written by Jacques Henri Bernardin de Saint Pierre, and published in 1787. Apparently the characters in this novel are entirely fictional, making it problematic how their tombs occurred.
Crapeaus may be a misspelling in French for the plural form of Crapaud, apparently Crapaux. Crapaud literally means "toad," but it apparently also means extremely low class. To be of a lower race than toads (crapaux) is an expression meaning "to be the lowest of the low."
Yusef is apparently a stereotypical name for a coachman. Compare John Ross Browne, Yusef, or the Journey of the Frangi

Famous Folks Of Fife
Adam Smith , (1723-90), Famed Scottish philosopher and economist, whose celebrated treatise An Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations was the first serious attempt to study the nature of capital and the historical development of industry and commerce among European nations.
Smith was appointed professor of logic in 1751 and then professor of moral philosophy in 1752 at the University of Glasgow. He later systematized the ethical teachings he had propounded in his lectures and published them in his first major work, Theory of Moral Sentiments (1759). In 1763 he resigned from the university to accept the position of tutor to Henry Scott, 3rd duke of Buccleuch, whom he accompanied on an 18-month tour of France and Switzerland. Smith met and associated with many of the leading Continental philosophers of the physiocratic school, which based its political and economic doctrines on the supremacy of natural law, wealth, and order. From 1766 to 1776, he lived in Kirkcaldy preparing The Wealth of Nations (1776). Smith was appointed commissioner of customs in Edinburgh in 1778, serving in this capacity until his death. In 1787 he was also named lord rector of the University of Glasgow.
The Wealth of Nations has served, perhaps more than any other single work in its field, as a guide to the formulation of governmental economic policies throughout the western world.
