Collection Number Collection Dates Collection Volume 1.20 cu.ft. (4 boxes) Biographical Sketch Related Collections Box Inventory
Provenance
Letters purchased circa 1975 from unknown dealer. This collection represents only a minute part of the correspondence of the editors of St. Nicholas magazine. In 1914, 1915, and 1928, hundreds of letters from Scribner's and the Century Company's archives were auctioned off as collector's items. The majority of the existing St. Nicholas correspondence is now held at the New York Public Library. Columbia University and the Huntington Library hold sizable collections of the letters of Mary Mapes Dodge.
Restrictions
Non-circulating; available for research. Researchers should use the photocopies in Box 4 unless special permission is obtained from the curator.
Biographical Sketch Roswell Smith conceived of the idea for St. Nicholas in 1870 when he consulted the famous children's author Mary Mapes Dodge on her ideas about what a magazine for children should be. That same year Smith had co-founded Scribner's with Charles Scribner and Dr. Josiah Gilbert Holland as a rival publication to the popular adult periodicals

Sophia’s Choice : An Annotated Bibliography of Books Owned and/or Read by Sophia Smith Compiled by Jacque Bradley Credits Introduction Sources consulted
"My reading has not amounted to much the last week. Nothing new. We are about establishing a library here. I hope it may prove useful and successful, and that I may profit."
    (Sophia Smith's journal entry 26 December 1864)
On 23 December 1864, John M. Greene recorded in his journal Sophia Smith's gift of $500 to start the Smith Literary Society in Hatfield. He also mentioned his own gift of The Holy Bible , because "Whatever is begun with the Bible is begun well." Therefore, this bibliography begins with Sophia's own copy of the Bible. The Holy Bible. New York: American Bible Society, 1854. [recovered] The American Bible Society was the largest publisher of Bibles in America during Sophia's lifetime. This edition is a popular edition, bound simply, which is in remarkably good condition after having been stored for so many years. Separating the Old Testament and the New Testament is a bookmark embroidered with the words God Is With Us . It is on these pages that Sophia Smith entered the names and dates of her parents' marriage, the birth dates of her siblings, and finally on a third page, the names and dates of death for each of her brothers and sisters. The name and date of death for her Uncle Oliver appears at the bottom of the page

"The Personal Power Course" was written by Wallace D. Wattles.
Wallace D. Wattles is best know for his classic masterpiece, "The Science of Getting Rich".
Recently someone discovered that he also wrote this equally if not even more important book. This book is extremely rare and practically unknown. Fortunately for us, it's been released in ebook format.

Correspondence, 1849-1893.
Manuscript Collection: MS 0545 1 folder Agency History/Biographical note:

Gail Hamilton was born Mary Abigail Dodge on March 31, 1833, in Hamilton, Massachusetts to Hannah Stanwood and James Brown Dodge. She graduated from Ipswich Female Seminary in 1850 and taught there until 1854. She then taught at Hartford Female Seminary, founded by Catherine Beecher, and then finally at Hartford High School. In 1858 she went to Washington, D.C. as a governess to Gamaliel Bailey's children. There she established herself as a writer. She returned to Hamilton from 1860-1868 to care for her mother. During this period she became very close to John Greenleaf Whittier. In 1871 she began spending winters in the household of House Speaker James G. Blaine, and many believe she wrote his speeches. She died on August 12, 1896, in Hamilton. Scope and Content:
The Gail Hamilton Correspondence consists of nineteen letters, primarily to Hamilton's cousin, Eunice Caldwell Cowles, head of Ipswich Female Seminary, 1844-1876. The letters describe Hamilton's teaching experiences at the Hartford Female Seminary and in a Hartford public school. Subsequent letters describe Hamilton's activities while living with the family of politician James G. Blaine in Washington, DC. These letters briefly comment on Hamilton's reading, Blaine's health, and include cursory discussions about political events including relations with Russia and China and the problems in Hawaii during President Cleveland's administration.

Mary Abigail Dodge
(James, Jonathan, George, Jonathan, John, William)
M ary Abigail Dodge was born in Hamilton, Massachusetts, on March 31, 1833, the seventh child and third daughter of James Brown Dodge and Hannah Stanwood Dodge. She was brought up on a farm and being an active girl, living the country life suited her. Being very bright, Mary was sent to Boarding School in Cambridge when she was twelve. The next year she was admitted into the Ipswich Female Seminary, from which she graduated in 1850. After graduating, Mary taught at the Seminary for the next four years before accepting a teaching job at the Hartford (Connecticut) Female Seminary. From there she moved on to the Hartford High School, where she became a most cherished teacher. Though her teaching career was met with great success, Mary grew dissatisfied with the long hours and low salary and longed to try her hand at writing. In 1856 she sent samples of her poetry to the antislavery publication "National Era" in Washington. Because of her fresh and individual style, her work impressed editor Gamaliel Bailey. Two years later she was offered a job as governess to Mr. Bailey's children, so Mary moved to Washington to take the job and spend the time there establishing herself as a writer. She made contributions to such publications as the "Independent", "Country Living and Country Thinking", "Summer Rest", and the "Atlantic Monthly".
