President George Washington appointed Alexander Hamilton to be the first Secretary of the Treasury when the first Congress passed an Act establishing the Treasury Department. He served as Secretary of the Treasury from September 11, 1789 until January 31, 1795. US Department of the Treasury Alexander Hamilton was born on the West Indies Island of Nevis on January 11, 1757. He went to New York in 1772 for his formal education, beginning with grammar school. Later he attended King's College, which is now Columbia University. Hamilton's great qualities of mind and spirit revealed themselves early. While in his teens, he took a firm stand on the side of the patriots, and became a leader in the movement advocating independence. Before he was 20 years of age, Hamilton commanded artillery troops in several important battles, and from 1777 to 1781, served as aide-de-camp to General Washington.

    Hamilton, Alexander
Hamilton and his older brother were the illegitimate sons of James Hamilton, a Scottish trader, and Rachel Faucett Lavien, who was married to another man. He was born on the Caribbean island of Nevis. His father abandoned the family (or his mother left him) on St. Croix when he was young and he and his mother lived with her relatives. She died in 1768, but he and his older brother were left destitute after her legal husband successfully sued for all of their mother's estate. The boys were made wards of their cousin, but he died very soon afterwards. Texas Looking to adopt? Pregnant? The boys were separated, with Alexander going to live with his best friend's family until he sailed for the American colonies in 1772. He soon became part of the colonists' struggle for independence and wrote revolutionary pamphlets, including part of The Federalist. He joined the colonial army in 1775 or 6 and quickly became George Washington's aide. He was elected to the Continental Congress in 1782 but resigned in 1783 and became a lawyer in New York, although he continued in politics until his death in 1804 in a duel with Aaron Burr. He reorganized the US financial system in the 1790s, after Washington appointed him the country's first secretary of the treasury (1789-95). There are counties in eight US states named for him.

    Hamilton, Alexander (1757-1804)
page: A hero of the American Revolutionary War and a prominent statesman in the government of the newly formed United States, Alexander Hamilton was held in high public esteem for his knowledge of military operations, economics, and politics, and for his fervent patriotism. In his private life he had affectionate relationships with both men and women, but perhaps his most intense romantic bond was with a young man, John Laurens, who was killed in 1782. Early Life Hamilton was born January 11, 1757 on Nevis, a British colony in the Leeward Islands. His father was a prosperous merchant but lost his fortune. When Hamilton was six, his father abandoned the family, and his mother found refuge for her two sons and herself with relatives on St. Croix. Following his mother's death in 1768, Hamilton, at age twelve, went to work for a local merchant. His obvious intelligence so impressed his employer and his relatives that they arranged to send him to the mainland to pursue his education. Sponsor Message.

Real firmness is good for anything; strut is good for nothing. Hamilton, Alexander Firmness Men give me credit for some genius. All the genius I have is this. When I have a subject in mind. I study it profoundly. Day and night it is before me. My mind becomes pervaded with it... the effort which I have made is what people are pleased to call the fruit of genius. It is the fruit of labor and thought. Hamilton, Alexander Genius Man is a reasoning rather than a reasonable animal.
