New York Image: The National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian Institution I. EARLY LIFE Hamilton was born in 1757 on the island of Nevis in the British West Indies. His father was a poor itinerant Scottish merchant of aristocratic descent; his mother, an English-French Huguenot, was a planter's daughter. In 1766, Hamilton's father moved the family to St. Croix in the Danish (now United States) Virgin Islands, returning to St. Kitts himself. Hamilton's mother became a storekeeper. Hamilton received a basic education from his mother and a Presbyterian clergyman, and he learned to speak fluent French. About the time of his mother's death in 1768, he became an apprentice clerk in a mercantile establishment.

ALEXANDER HAMILTON .............. BIOGRAPHY ..............
Hamilton retired to a lucrative New York legal practice in 1795, but remained involved in public affairs. He became second in command of the army when war with France seemed imminent in 1798. He plotted against the election of John Adams in 1796 and 1800, and tried to influence members of Adams' cabinet behind his back. In 1800, he used his political power to deter the election of Aaron Burr. This, along with other unfriendly actions, caused Burr to challenge Hamilton to a duel in July 1804, which left Hamilton dead.

Man is a reasoning rather than a reasonable animal. I never expect to see a perfect work from imperfect men. Real firmness is good for anything; strut is good for nothing. Alexander Hamilton was born on the island of Nevis in the West Indies. His Scottish father and French mother were not married. Very early in life he showed great intellectual potential and was sent to New York City for schooling by a sympathetic clergyman. Hamilton completed his basic schooling and was later admitted to King's College, now Columbia University. Patriotic fervor was at its height during the 1770s and young Hamilton impressed many with speeches and pamphlets. Following Lexington and Concord, Hamilton organized a cavalry company and saw action at Long Island and White Plains. His abilities were soon recognized by George Washington , who appointed Hamilton as one of his aides-de-camp. Toward the end of the Revolutionary War, Hamilton resigned as a Washington advisor in order to resume active participation in the conflict. He served with distinction at Yorktown in 1781. Following the war, Hamilton studied law and married Elizabeth Schuyler, daughter of General Philip J. Schuyler, head of a prominent New York family. The Hamiltons had eight children. In 1782-83, Hamilton served in the Continental Congress and later developed a successful law practice. In 1786, at the Annapolis Convention, he proposed a future meeting to address the problems of the
