"Best Italian food in the Twin Cities," he said. Holt sat next to his wife, Kim Holt. She smiled, too. What's not to smileabout? Life for the Holts is good. They own a nice split-level home. They have a bright, healthy 6-year-oldson. Dean Holt, 35, has hit his stride as a product sales manager for Pillsbury.Even though his wife, 28, left her job as a customer service representativefor Carlson Cos., the Holts easily rank in the upper reaches of the middleclass. And yet, because they are black, there is a certain tension to the Holts'achievements. For whites, middle-class life is typical. For blacks, it isnot. Jackson Michigan isn't such a bad place. It claims to be the birthplace of the Republican party, and it has one whopper of a prison, but the 27 golf courses more than make up for that. Musically, there is a lot going on. Distilling Jacksonian life into rhythm and rhyme, the Jacktown Hustlers are going to tell you, in full MP3 stereo, exactly what you've been missing all these years by living somewhere else. Victor McDermott is one of the founding members of the Hustlers. I asked him if he'd share some of his thoughts on his group and their music. RobsHouse.net is proud to feature the music of the Jacktown Hustlers R.H.: How did the group form, and how has it changed over the years? Vic: The group formed when Harvey Zook left his four track in my mom’s basement. Before then we were just intoxicated poets, ad libbing to instrumental hip hop grooves. My Brother and I would record music for our friends to rap over. We lived next to the public high school and attracted a lot of kids. The group stayed underground, literally, until Donny Osborne approached us with the idea of a live performing band. I never intended to form a band but we did and played house parties and such. We’ve been in and out of members, as well as sounds and arrangements, ever since, the only two consistent members being me and my brother. Yet, whether they were playing in the group or not, our friends have always been creative partners (Pete Douglass and Zach Jarret, to name a couple)
