E.E. Hale (1822-1909), progressive Unitarian minister, social activist and author of The Man Without a Country, one of the most famous American short stories of the 19th century, here discusses autograph collecting. He comments that "I should be sorry to join in any abuse of autograph collectors" and adds that his own collection gives him a great deal of pleasure and "is a constant source of entertainment to my friends." In the 1870's Hale founded a well respected organization called the Lend A Hand movement which incorporated a grass roots style of charitable aid. This letter is prefaced by Hale's poetic motto for the organization, "Look up and not down/ Look forward and not back;/ Look out and not in/ Lend a hand." KILMER, Joyce.

Biographical Note
Henry Mills Alden, American writer and editor for 50 years of Harper's Magazine and descendent of John and Priscilla Alden of the Mayflower fame, was born in Mount Tabor, Vermont, on 3 November 1836. In 1853 he entered Williams College, where his fellow students included James A. Garfield, John J. Ingalls, and Horace E. Scudder. After attending Williams, Alden spent three years at Andover Theological Seminary. Though he never entered the ministry, he often served as preacher at neighborhood parishes. Alden's literary career began while he was in the seminary with the acceptance of two articles by the Atlantic Monthly . The articles, one of which was on the Eleusinian Mysteries, had been sent, unbeknownst to him, to the

The President's Words: A Selection of Passages From the Speeches,
Addresses, and Letters of Abraham Lincoln.

Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the sixteenth president of the
United States.Among America's heroes, Lincoln continues to have
a unique appeal to many Americans and for people of other lands.
This charm derives from his remarkable life story - the rise from
humble origins, the dramatic death - and from his distinctly human
and humane personality as well as from his historical role as savior
of the Union and emancipator of the slaves. Much of Lincoln's character is conveyed to us from his skillful use
of words and remarkable oratory, as witnessed by his "Gettysburg
Address," where in only a few sentences Lincoln conveyed the deep tragedy of the CivilWar. Interestingly, Lincoln's co-speaker at Gettysburg was Edward Everett (1794-1865), the uncle of the compiler of this book, Edward Everett Hale, who, in turn, was a decendant of the great American Revolutionary War patriot, Nathan Hale (1755-1766). If Everett's Gettysburg speech is remembered at all today

First published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1863 and written to inspire patriotism and to combat Northern sympathy with the Confederacy during the Civil War, this classic story met with immediate praise and acceptance. It concerns the fate of Philip Nolan, a young army officer who was caught up in the eddies of the Aaron Burr affair of 1807, and the granting of his wish "to never hear the name of the United States again". Our Publication contains the text of the 1897 edition for which the author provided an account of the writing and publication of the story as well as its subsequent history. Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909), a famous Boston-born Unitarian clergyman, was a highly successful writer of fiction, autobiographical and scholarly works, including J ames Russell Lowell and His Friends Franklin in France , and A New England Boyhood . From 1903 to 1909, he was chaplain to the U.S. Senate.
