THE GLOBAL AFRICAN COMMUNITY H I S T O R Y N O T E S LEO AFRICANUS:
MOORISH MAN OF LEARNING
By RUNOKO RASHIDI DEDICAT ED TO MS. SYBIL WILLIAMS-CLARKE A l-Hassan Ibn-Muhammad al-Wezzani was born in Granada in Spain in 1493 or 1494 of well educated and affluent Moorish parents. He probably preferred to be called al-Fasi, the man of Fezthe great seat of learning in Morocco to which he owed his education. As a young man, he became a soldier, merchant and ambassador. By the age of twenty-five he had crossed the Mediterranean Sea numerous times, and traveled in West Africa and Southwest Asia. In 1518, while crossing the Mediterranean, he was captured on an Arab galley by Christian pirates. As he was a very learned man, instead of being sold into slavery, he was presented to Pope Leo X. The Pope, very impressed by him, freed the young man, granted him a pension and secured his conversion to Christianity. At his baptism, the Pope gave him his own names, Giovanni Leone, from which he became commonly known as Leo Africanus. When he was captured, Leo Africanus had with him a rough draft, in Arabic, of the work which made him famous

Two manors are referred to in Otley, one probably on the present site of Otley Hall. CARDINAL WOLSEY
Cardinal Wolsey was granted Henry VIII's land in Otley and other manors in 1528, while he was building Cardinals College, Ipswich, the year before he fell from power. It is possible that some of Otley Hall's linenfold panelling came from Wolsey's Hampton Court Palace. THE ROYAL FAMILY
The Gosnolds of Otley Hall were related to the Royal Family through Winifred Windsor who married John Gosnold, third son of Robert Gosnold III who held positions at Court, and was Gentleman Usher to Elizabeth 1 and James 1, and Gentlemen of the Privy Chamber to Charles. LADY JANE GREY
John Gosnold III had been MP for Ipswich in the Parliaments of 1547 and 1553 and was appointed Solicitor-General (1552). In this position he had the unenviable task of advising on the legality of Lady Jane Grey's succession. RICHARD HAKLUYT
The famous geographer-cartographer and pamphleteer was rector of nearby Wetheringsett. He strongly favoured English colonisation of America after the defeat of the Spanish Armada and may have inspired encouraged Bartholomew Gosnold to make his two famous voyages to America in 1602 and 1606/7.

In 1552, Hans Staden, a young Hessian, signed on with a Spanish expedition to Brazil, found himself shipwrecked in the land of the infamous Tupinambas, a tribe imagined throughout Europe as dog-headed man-eaters who breed, fatten, and butcher human children as civilized men do with pigs. Staden soon discovered that these were not the Cynocephali of legend (Lestringant 15) but a tribe a of cannibals with a healthy hatred of the Spanish and Portuguese who had for years made cruel and senseless war on them. Since Staden had wrecked with Spaniards, the Tupinambas bound him and prepared him for execution as they stoked the fires under the boucan and the communal cooking pot. Staden pleaded vigorously while they executed his shipmates with a large wooden mace, swearing to heaven he was not a Spanish enemy but a French ally. Konyan Bebe, the Tupinamba chief, challenged the frantic German to prove that he was neither Spanish nor Portuguese, but French. "I have already captured and eaten five Portuguese," the chief threatened. "They all claim to be French but they lie!" Staden, who did not speak French, improvised by answering in a nonsense language that sounded enough like French, and unlike Spanish, for Bebe to spare him from the boucan (Rosenstiel 29).

I have been collecting web sites pertinent to Early American literature under the categories used in my bibliography of secondary print material on the SEA page, but I wanted to have even a preliminary list up for the SEA conference in Charleston, March 1999, in case participants wanted to sample web resources. I will keep working on finding more sites, refining the list, thinking about categories, and providing annotations. Suggestions for organization and additions gratefully accepted. Choose one ... Cabot, John Hakluyt, Richard Hawkins, John Pocahontas Powhatan Raleigh, Walter Richard Hakluyt Walter Raleigh (c. 1552-1618) An English adventurer, Sir Walter Raleigh earned his fortune by winning the favor of Queen Elizabeth I, who lavished him with gifts and political appointments. He led several expeditions, including one that he described in The Discoverie of Guiana , which is celebrated as an exemplary Elizabethan adventure narrative. A man of many talents (and a man who was was tall and dashing), Raleigh is the stuff of legends. According to one story, he was imprisoned in the Tower of London for 13 years and later married his wife there. It is also said he laid his cloak over a puddle for the queen to walk over so she would not get dirtied. He was executed by King James I (Elizabeth's successor) for warring with Spain.

Traveler's accounts of their journeys and the lands they visit are important sources in understanding the past. As outsiders, travelers often note aspects of a culture that are too commonplace for local commentators to mention. More than this, travelers often provide some insight into how their own society understood itself in relation to other cultures. Throughout the Internet History Sourcebooks Project , there are a large number of travelers' accounts. The goal of this page is simply to bring them together. Since I expect users to be interested in the more general phenomenon of outsider descriptions , some other accounts that are not strictly traveler's accounts have have been included.

BENYOWSKY, Mauritius Augustus Count de. Memoirs and travels; consisting of his military operations in Poland, his exile into Kamchatka, his escape and voyage from that peninsula through the Northern Pacific ocean, touching at Japan and Formosa, to Canton in China, with an account of the French settlement he was appointed to form upon the island of Madagascar. Translated from the original manuscript.
First edition of the interesting account of the travels and memoirs of Count Mauritius Augustus De Benyowsky (1741-1786). According to the title the account is based on Benyowsky's original journal. It was translated by William Nicholson.  Benyowsky, Hungarian by birth, travelled to Poland and Lithuania where he was involved in military operations. After a collision with the Russian government he was exiled to Siberia, Kamchatka. With other adventurers he escaped by sea in 1771. During this trip he visited Japan, Formosa and Canton, China. The work contains interesting details of Siberia, the Russian fur trade and the history, life and customs of Kamchatka and also a description of the Kurile and Aleutian islands and Benyowsky claims to have landed on Alaska.  In  the name of the French government he made an expedition to Madagascar to establish a French colony. In 1786 he was shot by the French after trying to take over te colony.
The work is richly illustrated with maps, charts,  plans of the French settlement  on Madagascar etc..
