In 1895, the year before Henry Ford took his first ride in a motor carriage, Eddie Guest signed on with the Free Press as a 13-year-old office boy. He stayed for 60 years.
In those six decades, Detroit underwent half a dozen identity changes, but Eddie Guest became a steadfast character on the changing scene.
Three years after he joined the Free Press, Guest became a cub reporter. He quickly worked his way through the labor beat a much less consequential beat than it is today the waterfront beat and the police beat, where he worked "the dog watch" 3 p.m. to 3 a.m.

ABSTRACT: Papers of a leader in Wisconsin conservation efforts; containing correspondence with a number of other conservation leaders, including Charles Broughton (1927-1951), Louis Rake (1928-1944), and Haskell Noyes (1927-1939). Also contains extensive correspondence with Wisconsin governors and members of the state legislature (1930s-1940s), and with members of the U.S. Congress from almost every Wisconsin district. The collection includes articles, publicity materials, and speeches on conservation by La Budde; reports of the conservation committee of the Wisconsin Federation of Women's Clubs; and scrapbooks. ACCESS RESTRICTIONS: Wisconsin Statutes SCOPE AND CONTENT: The Correspondence is mainly concerned with Mrs. La Budde's efforts in behalf of conservation. There is, however, a small amount of personal correspondence between Mrs. La Budde and her family and friends. Often, these personal letters also tell of conservation activities. There are many letters to and from Wisconsin conservation leaders, among whom are: Charles E. Broughton of Sheboygan (1927-1951), Louis Rake of Horicon (1928-1944), and Haskel Noyes of Milwaukee (1927-1939). There is also a large amount of correspondence with many members of the Wisconsin legislature during the 1930s and 1940s, along with correspondence with members of the United States Congress from Wisconsin from nearly every district.

Dana Gioia, August Kleinzahler, and Garrison Keillor's Good Poems
(VIKING)
by Jack Foley
he current issue of Poetry (April, 2004) contains a debate between Dana Gioia and August Kleinzahler over Garrison Keillor's book, Good Poems , a selection of poems Keillor read on his daily Writers Almanac program. A number of my friends have written poems which have been read aloud by Garrison Keillor. The most recent of these was Robert Sward's "God is In the Cracks" from Rosicrucian in the Basement "Just a tiny crack separates this world from the next, and you step over it every day, God is in the cracks." Foot propped up, nurse hovering, phone ringing. "Relax and breathe from your heels. Now, that's breathing. So, tell me, have you enrolled yet?" "Enrolled?" "In the Illinois College of Podiatry." "Dad, I have a job. I teach." "Ha! Well, I'm a man of the lower extremities." "Dad, I'm fifty-three." "So what? I'm eighty. I knew you before you began wearing shoes. Too good for feet?" he asks. "I. Me. Mind: That's all I get from your poetry. Your words lack feet. Forget the mind. Mind is all over the place. There's no support. You want me to be proud of you? Be a foot man. Here, son," he says, handing me back my shoes, "try walking in these. Arch supports. Now there's a subject. Some day you'll write about arch supports." Keillor's smooth baritone was equal to the task of Sward's poem, and he read it quite well. And, indeed, Sward's odd, funny poem is a "good poem"; Sward was later told by Keillor's staff that the poem received many favorable comments.

Abou Ben Adhem
by Leigh Hunt [1784-1859]
written about 1836
Abou Ben Adhem (may his tribe increase!)
Awoke one night from a deep dream of peace,
And saw, within the moonlight of his room,
Making it rich, and like a lily in bloom,
An angel writing in a book of gold:-
Exceeding peace had made Ben Adhem bold,
And to the presence in the room he said, 'What writest thou?' - The vision raised its head, And with a look made of all sweet accord, Answered 'The names of those who love the Lord.' 'And is mine one?' said Abou. 'Nay, not so,' Replied the angel. Abou spoke more low, But cheerly still; and said 'I pray thee then, Write me as one that loves his fellow-men.' The angel wrote, and vanished. The next night

Garvin, Viola
"The House of Cæsar"
Sprague de Camp, in 1966, suggested that the second line was a paraphrase from Ernest Dowson's (q.v.) "Non sum qualis eram bonae sub regno Cynarae" (or "Cynara"), the last stanza of which contains the phrase, "But when the feast is finished and the lamps expire," and this came to be the accepted derivation. However, Garvin's poem seems much likelier, and since it is little known, it is printed in entirety here: THE HOUSE OF CÆSAR Yea — we have thought of royal robes and red. Had purple dreams of words we utterèd; Have lived once more the moment in the brain That stirred the multitude to shout again. All done, all fled

When You Know A Fellow When you get to know a fellow, know his joys and know his cares,
When you've come to understand him and the burdens that he bears,
When you've learned the fight he's making and the troubles in his way,
Then you find that he is different than you thought him yesterday.
You find his faults are trivial and there's not so much to blame
In the brother that you jeered at when you only knew his name. You are quick to see the blemish in the distant neighbor's style
