PLANTING TIME HAS BEGUN!! SPRING IS HERE!! P ERENNIALS, ANNUALS AND VEGETABLES It feels like spring! Days are warmer and the garden is starting to come alive after its winter rest. We are loaded with lots of early spring primroses and pansies, so come in and treat yourself to some of these knockout colors to liven up borders and containers. If by chance you missed last fall's selection of spring-blooming bulbs, we also have a cheery assortment of crocus, daffodils, tulips, anemone and more, all potted up and in bloom and ready to enjoy (and add into your garden when their bloom is finished). Beware - slugs are beginning to frolic (do slugs frolic?) in these warmer days, and they love primroses too! Not to mention the tender new growth of those bulbs, lettuces and other plants that have been starting to appear. We recommend using 'Worry Free' granules to stop the damage from these garden pests (not harmful to pets and birds). And speaking of bulbs (and tubers and corms, oh my) turn your thoughts to summer and early autumn just long enough to come to the nursery and take advantage of our

My interest has been piqued by your comment (on the frugal eating thread), regarding your weight loss after a switch away from "low fat" versions of foods.
I would love to hear more about this.
Is it because sugars are used to replace the fat taken out of the "low fat" foods?

Thyme ( Thymus family)
Mint ( Menthus family)
In our climate, the challenge is to keep mint from overrunning your yard. It is hardy, perennial and more than a bit invasive. If you don't want it to take over, keep it potted or dig some kind of barrier into the soil (mint propagates through underground runners, so a row of bricks will usually contain it). It has become a tradition to grow mint under outdoor faucets, especially in the shade. It tolerates the wet well, and a shady location will sometimes keep it from spreading too badly. There are now a variety of flavored mints available ginger, lime and basil, to name a few and these are often less invasive than the more standard spearmint or peppermint. The scent of crushed mint leaves is sometimes said to help one penetrate illusion, though mint too is said to be under the influence of Venus. The tea is widely used the calm the stomach.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
It is said that rosemary is useful for keeping away witches. This has not been my experience, though there is anecdotal evidence that it is likely to put them in better moods. This is one of my favorite herbs, one that I bake into bread and cook with lamb, one that I use in amulets for protection and healing. It is associated with clarity of thought as well. Rosemary is under the influence of the Sun, and prefers a sunny location.

Univ of Illinois Pr (Trd)
ISBN: 0252070097
Did you think that tomatoes were not in this country before the 1880s? And did you think that this was because they were considered to be poisonous or aphrodisiacal? Since 1987, writer and lecturer Smith has been researching references to tomatoes. After examining 50,000 sources, which he says does not by any means exhaust the material, Smith traces the history of this most popular fruit/vegetable-one that is now grown by more Gardening gardeners in this country than any other food.

UPDATE NOTICE: This publication includes resources on Organic Gardening published prior to 1989. A revised edition was published in 2003 covering resources published between 1989 and September 2003.
Organic Gardening
Pioneers of organic practices in the United States have acknowledged their debt to these men and to those others whose written works continue to influence us. J. I. Rodale, believed by many to be the father of organic practices in the U.S., called Sir Albert Howard of England the "father of the movement". Howard's classic study on soil fertility, "An Agricultural Testament" (Oxford, Oxford University Press, 1940) includes a chapter on the "Agriculture of the Nations Which Have Passed Away" as well as observations of agricultural techniques practiced in both the Orient and the Occident. There has always been a wide range of variation in organic gardening practices. From the purist view of followers of Masanobu Fukuoka of Japan, who advocates "no tillage, no fertilizer, no pesticides, no weeding, and no pruning" ("The Natural Way of Farming: the Theory and Practice of Green Philosophy", Tokyo, Japan Publications, 1985) to the perspective of those gardeners who seek to combine conventional and organic procedures, the field of opportunity for choice in organic gardening practice is fertile indeed. We hope that this Agri-Topic will assist you in making the choices appropriate to your situation and philosophy. Whether you are landscaping a small city backyard, planning a community garden, protecting the environment and/or your pocketbook, or just endeavoring to grow tastier fruits and vegetables for home or market, we wish you each, "Good Gardening!"

New-generation farmers are growing markets and a way of life
These sheep, raised on Bruce Dunlop's Lopez Island farm, have an idyllic life, grazing free-range on natural pasture. Their meat is a gourmet treat Dunlop sells direct from the farm. These customers buy their produce by subscription from Terry Carkner's farm in Puyallup. They pick up their vegetables weekly right at the farm. HERE, ON THIS farm in the belly of the Puyallup Valley, the soil is deep and rich as fudge, nurturing honey-sweet corn, perfect baby artichokes, lush lettuces the color of limes and emeralds. In the barn, gleaming strawberries perfume the air; peas swell in snapping-fresh pods. Through the drowsy days of summer and into fall, customers swarm like bees in the barn, hovering over tables piled with produce picked that morning. Terry Carkner, who owns and works this farm full time, sells everything she grows within 30 miles, and never leaves her driveway to do it. She has so much business she turns people away. Carkner has been farming here now for 20 years, but it wasn't always this way.

1) Help! Carla lost some Host Invite Pages!!!
Alas, it is true. This week, I'm setting final dates and places for two more tours east of the Rockies this fall. I had folks who signed up at the talks I gave on the trip I just returned from. I passed around a notebook at each event, or had it sitting on one of my book tables. Folks signed up to invite me to return to their part of the country and speak, offering to host me for such an event.
I could squeeze some of those invitations into one or another of my remaining two fall tours, but now I've lost the contact informationno phone numbers, no e-mail addresses, no names. I remember invitations to the thumb area of Michigan, one to do a writing workshop in Attica, Michican, and one for a homestead talk in Warren, Michigan. There were invites to Mims and to Keystone Heights in Florida and to Powell (?), Ohio. Oh, and I remember an invite to a town "about an hour north of St. Paul, Minnesota" also. And the Warren family? You signed up with just an e-mail address, no town.

http://www.springhillbooks.com/Bookshop/Bookshelf.htm
This book list comes from years of collecting and logging garden titles recommended by nursery owners and staff, landscapers, Master Gardeners, gardening friends, and yours truly, The Bookworm.
The titles are grouped by gardening subject. Because this list has grown to such enormous size, I decided to list the titles only and let you do the follow-up on those that spark an interest. Some of the listed titles are current; some of them are older titles. Fortunately, it is much easier now to locate older titles (and we can thank the Internet for that). Try the following sources for your book search:
  • The Google search engine is an excellent research tool—enter the book title in Google’s search field and see what pops up.
  • Try your local independent bookstore for both new and older titles—if it’s a new title but they do not have it in stock, they can usually order it for you. If it is an older book, they can do a search for you.
  • You can also make use of independent bookstores by going online to Booksense.com and conduct your search.
  • Try Amazon.com to locate both new and old titles.
