Stories such as 'Snow White' and 'Sleeping Beauty' have been retold countless times, but they were first written down by the Brothers Grimm. In their collaboration Wilhelm selected and arranged the stories, while Jacob, who was more interested in language and philology, was responsible for the scholarly work. The English writer Ford Madox Ford sees in his masterly guide The March of the Literature (1938) that their tales were more than a mere reflection of German romanticism: "But the real apotheosis of this side of the Teutonic cosmos came into its own through the labors of the brothers Ludwig Karl, and Wilhelm Karl Grimm for whom the measure of our administration may well be marked by the fact that there is nothing in the world left to say about their collection of fairy tales. It is, on the whole, wrong to concede the brothers Grimm to the romantics. They belonged to the earth movement and are known wherever the sky covers the land. That is the real German Empire." Jacob Grimm was born in Hanau. His father, who was educated in law and served as a town clerk, died when Jacob was young. His mother Dorothea struggled to pay the education of the children. With financial help of Dorothea's sister, Jacob and Wilhelm were sent to Kasel to attend the Lyzeum. Jacob then studied law at Marburg. He worked from 1816 to 1829 as a librarian at Kasel, where his brother served as a secretary. Between 1821 and 1822 the brothers raised extra money by collecting three volumes of folktales. With these publications they wanted to show, that Germans shared a similar culture and advocate the unification process of the small independent kingdoms and principalities.

JACOB LUDWIG CARL GRIMM
GRIMM, JACOB LUDWIG CARL The purely scientific side of Grimms character developed slowly. He seems to have felt the want of definite principles of etymology without being able to discover them, and indeed even in the first edition of his grammar (1819) he seems to be often groping in the dark. As early as 1815 we find A. W. Schlegel reviewing the Altdeutscke Wdlder (a periodical published by the two brothers) very severely, condemning the lawless etymological combinations it contained, and insisting on the necessity of strict philological method and a fundamental investigation of the laws of language, especially in the correspondence of sounds. This criticism is said to have had a considerable influence on the direction of Grimms studies. The first work he published, Uber den altdeutschen Meistergesang (1811), was of a purely literary character. Yet even in this essay Grimm showed that Minnesang and Meistersang were really one form of poetry, of which they merely represented different stages of development, and also announced his important discovery of the invariable division of the Lied into three strophic parts. His text-editions were mostly prepared in common with his brother. In. 1812 they published the two ancient fragments of the Hildebrandslied and the Weissenbrunner Gehet, Jacol having discovered what till then had never been suspectedthi alliteration in these poems. However, Jacob had little taste foi text-editing, and, as he himself confessed, the evolving of 1

In 1829 he is given a job at Gottingen Library, but for political reasons he is sacked. For four years he lives in Kassel with his brother Wilhelm Grimm and they are nominated by the Science Academy of Berlin. In 1848 he was elected for the First German Parliament.
Jacob Grimm was a very prolific writer, not only of fairytales, but also of linguistic treaties and theoretical books. Über den Altedetschen Meistergesang (1811) was a compillation of German legends and poems. Childrens' and Household Tales (with Wilhelm Grimm) was written between 1812 and 1815 and later published in two volumes (1822, 1857), where we can read his Snow White and Hansel and Gretel .
