101 Things You Gotta Do Before You Die! 36) Read angling's literary masters
So I finally tackled the book, and I shall now tell you a few things about The Compleat Angler. This should serve at least one of two purposes. First, it will prove that I did actually read the thing, and second, what follows might give you anglers out there a bit of a leg up, in that you should be able to fake your way through many a cocktail party with this information.
Bearing this distinction in mind, let me move on to some other classics of angling literature. But Zane Grey was not the best writer to hold world angling records. That distinction goes without dispute to Ernest Hemingway. He caught the first two bluefin tuna ever landed on regulation tackle, a 310-pounder and one weighing in at 381. He also caught one of the largest mako sharks ever landed, a 786-pound specimen. Indeed, Hemingway was the first vice-president of the International Game Fish Association, a position he held from 1940 until his death in 1961.

The Log of a Cowboy; A Narrative of the Old Trail Days
illustrated by E. Boyd Smith
"If all other books on trail driving were destroyed, a reader could still get a just and authentic conception of trail men, trail work, range cattle, cow horses, and the cow country in general from The Log of a Cowboy. It is a novel without a plot, a woman, character development, or sustained dramatic incidents; yet it is the classic of the occupation. It is a simple, straightaway narrative that takes a trail herd from the Rio Grande to the Canadian line, the hands talking as naturally as cows chew cuds, every page illuminated by an easy intimacy with life." illustrated by Paul Laune
Philadelphia, J. B. Lippincott Co. [1952] 220 pp.
Romantic stories of the Texas-Chihuahua border country, permeated with the acrid flavor of flowers, sweat, and frijoles. Poet, polo player and translator from the Romance languages, Allen is one of the most sensitive and nostalgic of all the evokers of the Southwest. 3. CLEVELAND AMORY (1917-)

Garvin, Viola
"The House of Cæsar"
Sprague de Camp, in 1966, suggested that the second line was a paraphrase from Ernest Dowson's (q.v.) "Non sum qualis eram bonae sub regno Cynarae" (or "Cynara"), the last stanza of which contains the phrase, "But when the feast is finished and the lamps expire," and this came to be the accepted derivation. However, Garvin's poem seems much likelier, and since it is little known, it is printed in entirety here: THE HOUSE OF CÆSAR Yea — we have thought of royal robes and red. Had purple dreams of words we utterèd; Have lived once more the moment in the brain That stirred the multitude to shout again. All done, all fled

Buffalo Fiction Beyond City of Light
By Cynthia Van Ness, MLS
Readers who were thrilled by Lauren Belfer's 1999 novel, City of Light , a historical mystery/thriller set in Buffalo, New York in 1901, can continue their exploration of how other authors have fictionalized our beloved city. The titles listed below are set in Buffalo, have pivotal scenes in Buffalo, or feature Buffalonians as central characters. The Buffalo connection is admittedly slight in several of the works. About half of these books are out of print (OP). Most will likely be found in libraries and through used book dealers
