Zane Grey
Pearl Zane Grey (1872-1939) was one of America's most prolific writers of Western fiction and the author of ninety books, two-thirds of which are fictional tales of the American West. Grey's novels and his writing style are the foundations of much of America's cowboy and western fiction and continue to serve as models for modern writers. Zane Grey, the author with two last names, was born in Zanesville, Ohio (a town named for one of his ancestors) and studied dentistry at the University of Pennsylvania. After graduation, he moved to New York City to open a small dental office on 74th street.
Betty Zane
Grey borrowed $600 from his wife, Lina Elise Roth, to publish his first novel, the history of an ancestor who lived in the time of the American War for Independence. And we should all be glad that Lina had $600 to lend, because this is a story that won Grey the attention of other publishers and opened the way for his literary career. Betty Zane

Riders of the Purple Sage
Zane Grey's Riders of the Purple Sage was the first volume from the western genre to join the Itty Bitty Computer Library. It is one of Grey's most popular novels and is a story of cattle rustlers, gunfighters and ranchers that takes place in the canyon lands of southern Utah. The story is appropriately categorized as a tale of adventure and romance as it concerns the romantic development of two couples and their relationships with the cultural and environmental factors that surround them.

Prolific American writer and pioneer of the Western as a new literary genre. Grey produced over sixty books, and almost as many have been brought out posthumously. In his works Grey presented the West as a moral battleground, in which his characters are destroyed or redeemed. His original semi outlaw heroes were his most influential creation: the outcast as a lonely man with a dark past, like Lassiter in RIDERS OF THE PURPLE SAGE (1912), or Buck Duane, the agonized killer of LONE STAR RANGER (1915). "Slingerland hated the railroad, and he could not see as Neale did, or any of the engineers or builders. This old trapper had the vision of the Indian - that far-seeing eye cleared by distance and silence, and the force of the great, lonely hills. Progress was great, but nature undespoiled was greater. If a race could not breed all stronger men, through its great movements, it might better not breed any, for the bad over-multiplied the good, and so their needs magnified into greed. Slingerland saw many shining bands of steel across the plains and mountains, many stations and hamlets and cities, a growing and marvellous prosperity from timber, mines, farms, and in the distant end - a gutted West."

Nevertheless, here are a few, ranging from classic Zane Grey to Jake Logan's trash fiction that mention the Waltz tale or at least make superficial use of the geographic locale.
