What do these words have in common? They are just some of the many subjects Zane Grey, the Great Western novelist, wrote about. Grey became one of the most popular writers, a World record angler, and an outdoorsman, but his success and fame did not come overnight. Although Grey never lived in Wyoming, he is considered a Wyoming author because he wrote about the area around Independence Rock (Central Wyoming) in his novel, Wyoming. I. Biography Grey was born in Zanesville, Ohio, on January 31, 1872. Grey was a descendent of the Zane family who settled Ohio and founded the town of Zanesville. In his youth, he loved the sport of baseball and later played semi-professionally. He attended the University of Pennsylvania on a baseball scholarship and majored in dentistry. His efforts towards dentistry were only half-hearted due to his great desire to write. This ambition was so great he had enough discipline to teach himself how to write. After he realized his talent, he got a publisher who knew a bestseller when he saw one. He married Lina Roth in 1905. Zane and Dolly had three children together: Romer, Betty, and Loren. The small family lived next to the Delaware River in Lackawaxen, Pennsylvania. In 1910 Zane wrote a breakthrough novel called

Zane Grey - (1872-1939) Altadena By Rajan Mohan
San Pedro High School, San Pedro, California Read another essay on Zane Grey written by Wyoming student Marc Eyre I. Biography It was on December 31, 1872, that the inventor of the "West" was born. Named after his father in a town named after his grandfather, Zanesville, Ohio, Pearl Zane Grey was born to be a great man. He would grow to be an athletic young man that served as an apprentice to his father, while showing incomparable talent in baseball, which gained him a scholarship to college. He would later focus all of his energy on writing, a life long passion. At this he would excel and gain world-renowned status in all media. Along with writing about the Wild West, he fished for the wild fish of the world, from inner America to beyond the outer reaches of civilization. He would die an accomplished man of the pen, and of the fishing rod, holding titles from top seller to heaviest tuna. Zanesville, Ohio, named his grandfather, was the birthplace of Pearl Zane Gray. It was on the 31st of December 1872, that the "inventor" of the "Wild West" was born to Lewis Gray, a dentist, a farmer, and a preacher as well. Born the second boy of five children, Pearl would change his name in the 1890's by dropping Pearl and changing the spelling of his last name from "Gray" to "Grey." This young, athletic, spirit would grow up in Ohio with the wilderness at his back porch. It was in the Muskingum River that the six-year-old Gray would first see a live fish. The sight captured the mind of the young child, and, for the rest of his life, would intrigue him, and draw him to the outer limits of civilization, and beyond.

to buy this book Zane Grey's West Society Writer of the Purple Prose Zane Grey went West, fell in love with the desert and redefined the modern cowboy novel The tips of the cottonwoods and the oaks waved to the east, and the rings of aspens along the terraces twinkled their myriad of bright faces in fleet and glancing gleam. A low roar rose from the leaves of the forest, and the spruces swished in the rising wind. It came in gusts, with light breezes between. As it increased in strength the lulls shortened in length till there was a strong and steady blow all the time, and violent puffs at intervals, and sudden whirling currents. The clouds spread over the valley, rolling swiftly and low, and twilight faded into a sweeping darkness. Then the singing of the wind in the caves drowned the swift roar of rustling leaves; then the song swelled to a mourning, moaning wail; then with the gathering power of the wind the wail changed to a shriek. That's what it is like all right when a storm hits the high country. Zane Grey, who wrote this description in his best-known book, Riders of the Purple Sage , would likely have been pleasantly surprised that more than a half-century after his death scholars are taking him seriously. During his lifetime (1872-1939), most critics panned his novels for their purple prose even as the public ate them up.

Riders of the Purple Sage
New York Public Library's Books of the Century
Author Info: Zane Grey
Her father's death has left Jane Withersteen in possession of the richest land holding in the Cottonwoods, a Mormon village on the 1871 Utah frontier. Most importantly, Amber Spring runs through her property and so she controls the water supply that makes possible the rolling fields of purple sage. But now the Mormon church wants to gain contol of the spring by forcing an unwilling Jane to marry Elder Tull. They've been steadily increasing the pressure on her and as the novel opens, Tull and his henchmen have come to arrest Venters, the Gentile foreman on her ranch. Outnumbered and outgunned, Jane prays for deliverance. Just as Tull is about to whip Venters, a rider in black appearsLassiter, the scourge of the Mormons. Lassiter is an archetype of the mythic Western hero. In him we see the origins of both Shane and Ethan Edwards (from The Searchers , Amos in the novel)a lone gunmen fighting for Justice, he has descended upon Mormon Utah with a vengeance, obsessively searching for the sister who was kidnapped by a Mormon proselytizer.

Statement of Purpose:
136 foot diorama and period vehicles tell story of America's only Federal Highway memorabilia of author Zane Grey. In the wake of America's victory over Great Britain in the Revolutionary War, a new nation looked westward. Conquering the frontier meant a new life for those hardy enough to brave its challenges - and an adventure that inspires us even today. For the first half of the nineteenth century - and again from the late 1800s to the 1950s - the road to adventure was the National Road, America's first federal highway. The allure of the frontier was celebrated by novelist Zane Grey, whose books helped to create the image of the West that is so familiar to us today. Together, the National Road and Zane Grey typify the American spirit.
THE NATIONAL ROAD
George Washington and Thomas Jefferson both believed a trans-Appalachian land link was essential to unify the first states of young, expanding America. Their ambitions were realized in 1806, when Congress authorized the construction from Cumberland, Maryland, to the Ohio River, of the first federally supported road in U.S. history.
