TOPOGRAPHY.
GREENWOOD County was named in honor of Greenwood, United States Land Commissioner, under pierce and Buchanan. It was first laid off by the bogus Legislature of 1855-56, but was for a number of years thereafter unorganized territory. As at first laid out, the county was a very nearly square tract of uniform size with its neighbors, but when in 1867 Madison County was abolished, and its north part given to Breckinridge (now Lyon) County, the lower portion, to a point three miles above Madison, was added to Greenwood. In giving the boundaries at this time, the southern boundary was b accident moved too far to the south, thus cutting off a strip of Howard (now Elk) County, three miles wide. This error was rectified in 1868. As finally laid off its boundaries are as follows: On the north by Lyon and Chase; east by Wilson, Woodson and Coffey, south by Elk, and west by Butler County.

During the tour, in a accident he stopped breathing for several minutes after hitting his head on the hard ground, and did not play in any of the tests. He also toured with the Lions in 2001 but injury again prevented him from playing. Subsequently picked by new England coach and ex-Tigers centre Clive Woodward he became an important part of that team, notably establishing a centre partnership with

GENEALOGICAL CHARTS, INDEX, PHOTOGRAPHS, AND HAIR SAMPLES
Due to the length of the lists of names in the genealogical charts listing, index listing, and hair samples listing, they are broken up into manageable sections according to their organization in the boxes.

    Genealogical charts
    26" x 36" (177 charts in 20 boxes)
CBD compiled genealogical charts from pictures of individuals and families, and labeled each image according to the categories of Negro, Indian and White. Hair samples were attached to some of the charts. The charts were compiled to show changes of certain physical features within generations of families. Many of the photos were taken by CBD to record individual faces and features. They range from side and frontal views of individuals to family sittings. A few exterior views of houses were taken, in accordance with the sociological aspect of her study.
Today, the charts constitute a rich source for genealogists, biographers, family historians, and historians of science. Forty of the charts (some in abbreviated form) are reproduced in Day's book, A Study of Some Negro-White Families in the United States. In addition, photographic reproductions of the charts, as well as individual images, can be obtained from the Photographic Archives , Peabody Museum. [Please also see the Photographic Resources

James Mickleborough Greenwood James Mickleborough Greenwood, son of Edmond and Jeanette (Foster) Greenwood, was born November 15, 1837 in Sangamon County, IL. His parents moved to Adair County, MO in 1852 where, after completing his public school education at age 16, he began teaching in the county rural schools. He later attended the Methodist Seminary at Canton, MO, then taught again in Adair County schools as well as those in Knox and Scotland Counties, MO and Adams County, IL. In 1867, Joseph Baldwin recruited Greenwood to teach mathematics, logic and natural philosophy at the Normal School he was organizing in Kirksville. He hired Greenwood’s wife, Amanda (McDaniel) Greenwood (1840-1904), as head of the model school and teacher of botany and history. Other than a six month stint at Mount Pleasant College in Huntsville, the Greenwoods remained on Baldwin’s faculty until 1874 when he accepted the position of Superintendent of the Kansas City Public Schools.

DAVID MERRY , the immigrant ancestor of the Industry and New Vineyard Merrys, was a native of Tisbury, Dukes Co., Mass., as nearly as can be learned. He was born in 1741, and married, Dec. 29, 1761, Mrs. Eunice (Chase) Chase (born 1738), relict of Valentine Chase, and daughter of Isaac and Mary (Chase) Chase. Feb. 1, 1793, he bought lot No. 1 in Range 2, paying therefor the sum of eight pounds, sterling. There is some uncertainty as to the date of his removal to New Vineyard, but it was probably soon after making his purchase. This farm is now (1890) owned by Charles F. Oliver, its present occupant. Mr. Merry seems to have been a man much loved by his kindred, and his name is still borne and perpetuated by his descendants. He died July 8, 1815, aged 74 years. His wife died Aug. 6, 1797, aged 59 years. [David, Eunice and their son Asa are buried in Franklin County .] [For the ancestry of David Merry, see

"The Red Ceiling" is so powerful that, in fact, I've never seen it reproduced on the page to my satisfaction. When you look at a dye-transfer print it's like it's red blood that is wet on the wall. The photograph was like a Bach exercise for me because I knew that red was the most difficult color to work with. A little red is usually enough, but to work with an entire surface was a challenge. It was hard to do. I don't know of any totally red pictures, except in advertising. The photograph is still powerful. It shocks you every time. Thus William Eggleston explained the challenge behind the neutral gaze and obvious subject matter of this photograph. Gift of Caldecot Chubb
