Under the Greenwood Tree
Under the greenwood tree
Who loves to lie with me,
And turn his merry note
Unto the sweet bird's throat,
Come hither, come hither, come hither:
Here shall he see
No enemy
But winter and rough weather.
Who doth ambition shun,
And loves to live i' the sun,
Seeking the food he eats, And pleased with what he gets, Come hither, come hither, come hither: Here shall he see No enemy But winter and rough weather.

Bill Greenwood was one of AWG's more cherished members. During his life, he worked to improve the status of women and minorities in the geosciences. As Associate Chief Geologist at the U.S. Geologist Survey, he was instrumental in forming the USGS Women's Advisory Committee that addresses issues that are important to women. Eligible candidates must be minority women who are currently enrolled as fulltime, graduate or undergraduate geoscience majors in an accredited, degree-granting college or university in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, or West Virginia. The candidate must demonstrate (1) awareness of the importance of community outreach by participation in geoscience or earth-science education activities that reflect AWG's goals and (2) potential for leadership as a future geoscience professional. Please submit (1) a letter of nomination from a current geoscience professor or the geoscience department chairperson, (2) one additional letter of recommendation from geoscience faculty or geoscience employer, and (3) a letter of application from the candidate. Candidates must include their school and home addresses.

The William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition is a North American math contest for college students. Each year on the first Saturday in December, over 2000 students spend 6 hours (in two sittings) trying to solve 12 problems. Individual and team winners (and their schools, in the latter case) get some money and a few minutes of fame. Results for a given December's exam usually become available in early April of the following year. The material on this page is intended to supplement the MAA's three existing compilations of Putnam exams. These books are The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition. Problems and solutions: 1938-1964 , by Gleason, Greenwood and Kelly; The William Lowell Putnam mathematical competition. Problems and solutions: 1965-1984 , edited by Alexanderson, Klosinski and Larson; and The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition 1985-2000: Problems, Solutions and Commentary , by Kedlaya, Poonen and Vakil. (All three are currently in print; the MAA has reissued the first two in new softcover editions.) For problems, solutions, results and statistics not given below, check the

William Pitt Greenwood Bartlett
BARTLETT, William Pitt Greenwood, mathematician, born in Boston, Massachusetts, 27 October 1837; died in Cambridge, Massachusetts, 13 January 1865. He was graduated at Harvard in 1858, and was one of the proctors of the College from 1859 till 1862. He became one of the corps of computers for the "Nautical almanac," and the character of his work is shown by the fact that, owing to the condition in which it was left at his death, another computer was able to take it up without the loss of any of Mr. Bartlett's labor. He published several papers on the elements of quaternions in the "Mathematical Monthly," and on interpolation in the "Memoirs of the American Academy."

Greenwood In 1830 William Ruffin Barrow wanted a house. This house would be no ordinary home. It was very elegant and elaborate, suited for a royal family. He built it in the Greek Revival Style and had twenty-eight columns built by his slaves surrounding it. Of course he had the money to do this. His family had been very wealthy and he liked large homes. This was the perfect combination to make an extraordinary plantation. Greenwood is a living history book full of exiting details hidden beneath the walls. Movies and television series have been shot at the plantation. As well as "North and South" a mini series filmed in 1985. The directors of North and South changed the landscaping and added wallpaper, which is still there today. On August 1st, 1960 Greenwood was struck by lightning and the whole house was burned to the ground except the 28 brick columns. In 1968 William Barnes and his son Richard bought the house to restore it. They completely rebuild the house using photographs sent in from around the country! It took the Barnes 16 years to rebuild Greenwood. Today it looks exactly like it would have when William Ruffin Barrow lived in it. Greenwood is not a historic landmark because it is not the original building that was built on this site. Greenwood is a very exciting and interesting plantation. It gives you the feeling of the luxury and hard work that was put into a running plantation. I recommend going to this plantation if you ever happen to stop by Louisiana, also known as "Plantation Country"!

Bill Voiselle, who won 74 games in his major league career, died on Jan. 31, 2005 at Self Memorial Hospital in Greenwood, S.C. He was 86. For more on Bill Voiselle As a youngster in Ninety Six, South Carolina, Bill Voiselle and his friends were often faced with the rules of the day - no baseball on Sundays. So, Voiselle and his friends would sneak near the banks of a local creek and play anyway. At least, until they got caught. Voiselle wouldn't have to worry about sneaking around on Sundays in the future though. Voiselle, or Old Ninety Six as he was called, would make it to Major League Baseball. "Some of the biggest crowds I pitched to were on Sundays," Voiselle said, recalling his career during an interview in 1993.
