84. Ulysses S. Grant: Reasons For Being A Republican - 1880
Ulysses S. Grant s Reasons for Being a Republican, presented in The NationalCenter for Public Policy Research s Archive by Ulysses S. Grant (18221885)
http://www.nationalcenter.org/USGrant.html
Reasons for Being a Republican by Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) September 28, 1880 Delivered by the retired president before a Republican gathering in Warren, Ohio. IN view of the known character of the speaker who is to address you to-day, and his long public career, and association with the leading statesmen of this country for the past twenty years, it would not be becoming in me to detain you with many remarks of my own. But it may be proper for me to account to you on the first occasion of my presiding at political meetings for the faith that is in me. I am a Republican, as the two great political parties are now divided, because the Republican party is a national party seeking the greatest good for the greatest number of citizens. There is not a precinct in this vast nation where a Democrat can not cast his ballot and have it counted as cast. No matter what the prominence of the opposite party, he can proclaim his political opinions, even if he is only one among a thousand, without fear and without proscription on account of his opinions. There are fourteen States, and localities in some other States, where Republicans have not this privilege. This is one reason why I am a Republican. But I am a Republican for many other reasons. The Republican party assures protection to life and property, the public credit, and the payment of the debts of the government, State, county, or municipality, so far as it can control. The Democratic party does no promise this; if it does, it has broken its promises to the extent of hundreds of millions, as many Northern Democrats can testify to their sorrow. I am a Republican, as between the existing parties, because it fosters the production of the field and farm, and of manufactories, and it encourages the general education of the poor as well as the rich.

Ulysses S. Grant Late in the administration of Andrew Johnson, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant quarreled with the President and aligned himself with the Radical Republicans. He was, as the symbol of Union victory during the Civil War, their logical candidate for President in 1868. When he was elected, the American people hoped for an end to turmoil. Grant provided neither vigor nor reform. Looking to Congress for direction, he seemed bewildered. One visitor to the White House noted "a puzzled pathos, as of a man with a problem before him of which he does not understand the terms." Born in 1822, Grant was the son of an Ohio tanner. He went to West Point rather against his will and graduated in the middle of his class. In the Mexican War he fought under Gen. Zachary Taylor.

At the outbreak of the Civil War, Grant was working in his father's leather store in Galena, Illinois. He was appointed by the Governor to command an unruly volunteer regiment. Grant whipped it into shape and by September 1861 he had risen to the rank of brigadier general of volunteers.

North Ohio General in Chief of the Union Army and U.S. President He rose from comparative obscurity to become general in chief of the Union Army late in the war, securing victory by exhausting the Confederates and pure perseverance. Born Hiram Ulysses Grant, he became known as U.S. ("Unconditional Surrender") Grant under Lincoln. In 1868, he became the youngest man yet elected to the U.S. presidency, serving two terms marred by scandal. Grant's memoirs, completed only days before his death, are considered among the best of any written about the Civil War.

    Ulysses S. Grant
In June 1864, Mathew Brady photographed General Ulysses S. Grant at City Point in Virginia. That spring, Brady had petitioned the army to travel behind the lines, but received permission only after his wife asked Mrs. Grant for help. On June 19, Grant wrote home, reporting, "Brady is along with the Army and is taking a great many views and will send you a copy of each." Records suggest that Brady had a second mission, sending coded messages to friends on Wall Street, who used knowledge of the army's plans to manipulate the stock market in their favor. A young colonel discovered the scheme and asked Assistant Secretary of War Charles Dana to tell Grant "how he is being deceived by one to whom he has granted various privileges and favors." There is no record of Grant's response. See GPA Healy Hancock and Birney and Staffs Robert E. Lee , and General Meade Mathew Brady Studio

[1] leaf. 25 x 40 cm. folded to 25 x 20 cm. See also Grant's official White House biography (http://www.whitehouse.gov/history/presidents/ug18.html). Grant transmits orders regarding the countersigning of rolls of paroled prisoners. He requests that "all those already paroled be moved out as early as possible tomorrow." Hereafter, Grant states that all regiments coming up for parole should be ready to march immediately "as soon as they receive their paroles." Grant graduated from West Point and fought in the Mexican War under Zachary Taylor (see also a letter from Taylor in the collection). After earning an important victory at Vicksburg (the place where he wrote this letter), Grant took command of the Union Army in 1864, negotiating Lee's surrender at Appomattox the following year. He became the eighteenth President of the United States and served in this office from 1869 to 1877. Grant, Ulysses S. (Ulysses Simpson), 1822-1885Correspondence.

American History Study Guide Grant's Recollection of the Confederate Surrender On April 9, 1865, Union general Ulysses S. Grant (1822- 1885; see entry in volume 3) and Confederate general Robert E. Lee (1807-1870; see box in Ulysses S. Grant entry in volume 3) met at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia to discuss the surrender of the Confederacy. The forces of Grant and Lee had been engaged in battle for months. The Confederacy was making its last stand against superior military power and economic support enjoyed by the Union army. When the city of Richmond, Virginia, fell to the Union army, the Civil War was effectively over. Though the war had been bitterly fought and divided the nation, many key figures were anxious for a respectable peace that would unify the nation. President
