[Much was written about U. S. Grant by the early newspapers. A series of articles written in the July 30th issue of the Winfield Courier concerning Grant, after his death was announced, made me realize why he was so revered by citizens of our country at that time. I have put in the series of articles in this one issue. After I completed these, I consulted the following book, THE CIVIL WAR DICTIONARY, REVISED EDITION, BY MARK M. BOATNER III, 1987. It gives a more complete picture of the career of this amazing man. MAW] WINFIELD, COWLEY COUNTY, KANSAS, THURSDAY, JULY 30, 1885. DEATH OF GRANT. Summary of Religious Views:
Grant is often listed as a Methodist, but Franklin Steiner asserts that, although his wife was Methodist, and he sometimes accompanied her to church services, Grant himself never joined any church. Here is what James L. Crane, Chaplain under Grant's first Civil War command, had to say about Grant's religious views: "Grant belongs to no church organization, yet he entertains and expresses the highest esteem for all the enterprises that tend to promote religion. When at home he generally attended the Methodist Episcopal church, with which some of the members of his family were connected. While he was colonel of the Twenty-first Regiment he gave every encouragement and facility for securing a prompt and uniform observance of religious services, and was generally found in the audience listening to preaching."
Grant was a strong supporter of the separation of church and state, especially in the area of education.

ULYSSES S. GRANT
"Grant: a biography" by William S. McFeely.
Published by: Norton,Ww
Ulysses Simpson Grant, (1822-1885), American general and 18th President of the United States. Grant, the most capable of the Union generals during the Civil War, was a master strategist. He won the first major Union victories. President Abraham Lincoln staunchly defended him against critics and promoted him to command all Union forces. Grant accepted Gen. Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House. However, Grant had no disposition for political leadership, and as president (1869-1877) he scarcely attempted to control events. He made injudicious appointments to public office, and official corruption tainted his administration, although Grant himself was not involved in the peculations.
Grant was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822, and baptized Hiram Ulysses. The eldest son of Jesse Root Grant and Hannah Simpson Grant, he came from a family that, he proudly declared, had been American "for generations, in all its branches, direct and collateral." In 1823 his father moved his tanning business to Georgetown, Ohio, where "Lyss" spent his boyhood. His education at a grammar school in Georgetown, at Maysville Seminary in Maysville, Ky., and at the Presbyterian Academy of Ripley, Ohio, was superficial and repetitious, and the boy showed no scholarly bent. He became noted, however, for his sturdy self-reliance and for his ability to ride and control even the wildest horses.

Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) commanded the victorious Union armies at the close of the Civil War in 1865. His success and fame as a general led to his election as president in 1868. During his military career, Grant led his troops with energy and determination. He developed great confidence in his own judgment, and an ability to learn from experience. These traits also characterized Grant's political career. But the qualities that had brought him military glory were not enough to solve the nation's problems in the 1870's. Grant's enemies called him a poor president. Historians have generally agreed.
Grant was the first West Point graduate to become president. A quiet, unassuming man, he had an almost shy manner and did not look like a leader. Grant's presidency was clouded by disgrace and dishonesty. Congressional investigations revealed widespread corruption in both state and local governments. Grant was slow to realize that some persons who pretended to be his friends could not be trusted. Several of his major appointees became involved in scandals. But Grant himself was so honest that few historians believe he could have been involved personally.

General of the Union Army
The Union Army's greatest general who led his troops to victory in the American Civil War. President Abraham Lincoln selected Grant to lead the Union forces on March 9, 1864, following a string of unsuccessful commanders. Grant was a puzzling figure in American public life. He was a failure in his early ventures into both business and military life. In the four years of commanding Union forces, he climbed to the highest rank in the U.S. Army and directed the strategy that successfully concluded the Civil War in 1865. His two terms as president of the United States are considered by many historians to be the most corrupt in the country's history. Yet from accounts of Grant's contemporaries, as well as from his own memoirs, there emerges a personality of strong character and considerable dignity. ~ Early Life ~ Grant was the son of a frontier family. He was born Hiram Ulysses Grant in 1822 in a two-room cabin in Point Pleasant in southwestern Ohio, near the Ohio River. His father, Jesse Root Grant, was a tanner. Hannah Simpson Grant, his mother, was a pious, hardworking frontier woman. When Ulysses was one year old, his father moved the family to nearby Georgetown, where the boy grew up and attended school. He later went to nearby Maysville Seminary in Maysville, Kentucky, and the Presbyterian Academy in Ripley, Ohio.

Ulysses Simpson Grant was born April 26, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio. Against his father's wishes, Grant entered the U.S. Military Academy and finished in the middle of the class. Like most military school graduates at the time, Grant was sent to Mexico and served under General Zachary Taylor during the Civil War. In other endeavors before the Civil War, Grant was unsuccessful. In 1864, President Lincoln named him General-in-Chief of the Union army. Grant's "Overland Campaign" at such battles as Wilderness, Cold Harbor and Petersburg took a heavy toll on Lee's Army of Northern Virginia despite the heavy casualties inflicted upon his forces. Lee's weakened forces held the Confederate strongholds of Petersburg and Richmond for ten months before being overwhelmed by Grant's forces. On April 9, 1865 Ulysses s. Grant received Lee's surrender and the Civil War was over.
