American President Ulysses S. Grant, 1822-1885
America's 18th president Ulysses S. Grant was elected on his fame as the commander who had led the Union to victory during the Civil War. Grant long held the record for being the youngest man elected to the Oval Office, inaugurated at the age of 46. Grant's administration was scarred by scandal. Grant died at the age of 63 on July 23rd, 1885. Born on April 27th, 1822 in Point Pleasant, Ohio, Hiram Ulysses Grant Grant's West Point instructors and peers often criticized his sloppiness and perpetual slouch and lack of graces which some speculated was deliberate, as Grant maintained that he was enrolled against his will. Grant showed small interest in any of the military academy curriculum other than mathematics and horsemanship, and graduated solidly in the lower half of his class in 1843, admitting his greatest accomplishments for his 4 years were growing more than 6 inches and reading many good books. Assigned as a brevet lieutenant to an infantry garrison outside of St. Louis, Grant was brought into St. Louis social circles through a former classmate, Frederick Dent, whose family was among the region's elite plantation clans. Grant was introduced to Dent's younger sister Julia Boggs Dent,

Introduction
Print Preview of Section Grant, Ulysses S(impson) (1822-1885), 18th president of the United States (1869-1877). Grant was a puzzling figure in American public life. He was a failure in his early ventures into both business and military life. In four years of commanding Union forces he climbed to the highest rank in the U.S. Army and directed the strategy that successfully concluded the Civil War in 1865. His two terms as president of the United States are considered by many historians to be the most corrupt in the country's history. Yet from accounts of Grant's contemporaries, as well as from his own memoirs, there emerges a personality of strong character and considerable dignity.

Ulysses Simpson Grant
American General Ulysses S. Grant played the principal role in the Union defeat of the Confederacy in the American Civil War, his tactical and strategic abilities proving to be superior to those of his primary foe, Robert Edward Lee. Although described as a drunkard and a butcher for the heavy casualties he experienced, Grant understood the importance of committing all military and economic assets to total warfare. In achieving victory, Grant preserved the Union of the United States of America. Neither Grant's civilian nor military beginnings were remarkable. Born the oldest of six children to a Point Pleasant, Ohio, tannery owner on April 27, 1822, Grant received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy in 1839. Upon reporting to West Point, Grant decided to changed his birth name from Hiram Ulysses to Ulysses Hiram to avoid the embarrassing initials "HUG." An administrative error on the part of the congressman who nominated him for the academy recorded the name as Ulysses Simpson. To avoid further confusion and red tape, Grant made no effort to correct the error and readily became U. S. Grant. Grant showed no great potential at West Point, graduation twenty-first among thirty-nine cadets in the class of 1843. Although horsemanship had proved to be Grant's most outstanding attribute at the academy, the new lieutenant's commission was in the infantry, and he reported to the Fourth Regiment at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri, after graduation.

          Ulysses Simpson Grant Born: Birthplace:
Point Pleasant, Ohio Ulysses Simpson Grant was born (as Hiram Ulysses Grant) at Point Pleasant, Ohio, on April 27, 1822. He graduated from West Point in 1843 and served without particular distinction in the Mexican War. In 1848 he married Julia Dent. He resigned from the army in 1854, after warnings from his commanding officer about his drinking habits, and for the next six years held a wide variety of jobs in the Middle West. With the outbreak of the Civil War, he sought a command and soon, to his surprise, was made a brigadier general. His continuing successes in the western theaters, culminating in the capture of Vicksburg, Miss., in 1863, brought him national fame and soon the command of all the Union armies. Grant's dogged, implacable policy of concentrating on dividing and destroying the Confederate armies brought the war to an end in 1865. The next year, he was made full general. In 1868, as Republican candidate for president, Grant was elected over the Democrat, Horatio Seymour. From the start, Grant showed his unfitness for the office. His cabinet was weak, his domestic policy was confused, and many of his intimate associates were corrupt. The notable achievement in foreign affairs was the settlement of controversies with Great Britain in the Treaty of London (1871), negotiated by his able secretary of state, Hamilton Fish.

Ulysses S. Grant
Eighteenth President (1869-1877)
In the spring of 1861, Ulysses Grant hardly seemed destined for greatness. Having resigned his army captain's commission in 1854, this West Point graduate was eking out a living as a clerk in his brother's leather shop. But the Civil War marked a dramatic shift in his fortune. Reenlisting in the army, he was soon made a general. By war's end, he was commander of all Union land forces, and as the chief architect of the South's defeat, he had become one of the country's most admired heroes. Grant's popularity inevitably led to his election to the presidency in 1868. But here he proved less successful, and his weak control over his administration spawned an outbreak of federal corruption that made "Grantism" synonymous with public graft. Nevertheless, Grant's personal charisma waned but little through his two terms. Had he succumbed to talk of running for a third, he perhaps would have won. Grant posed for this portrait shortly after he returned from a triumphant world tour following his presidency. The largely self-taught artist Thomas LeClear painted two versions. This one was originally owned by Grant himself, while the second one became part of the White House collection.

In the 1800's, the United States was divided over the issue of slavery. In the North, abolitionists were against slavery. In the South, plantation owners were in favor of slavery. The issue of slavery played an important role when a new state was admitted into the Union. Would the new state enter as a free state and not allow slavery or would the new state enter as a slave state and allow slavery?

Shane Hamilton, Web Editor Grant, Ulysses S. Army general, president (1822-1885) Born and raised in Ohio, he graduated from West Point in 1843 with an unexceptional record. He served in the Mexican War (1846-1848), reaching the rank of captain by war's end. Over the next six years, he served at a series of quiet, isolated Western outposts before retiring from the military in 1854. Already a notorious heavy drinker, he settled in Missouri and took up farming, but soon found himself restless and unhappy. At the outbreak of the Civil War, Grant returned to military command in the Union forces. Soon promoted to general, he became known for his aggressive drives through enemy territory while suffering high casualty rates. In 1864, Lincoln made him commander of all Union forces, and he oversaw the final defeat of the Confederacy the following year.
Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) Grant afterwards became secretary of war under president Johnson. Being a popular war hero made him a prime presidential candidate, and in 1868 he ran and won on the Republican ticket. However, his military prowess did not translate well to the demands of political leadership. One historian writes, "As president, he was out of his element; a cabinet of cronies and political contributors proved largely incompetent and corrupt, and Grant had no overall vision for the country." Nonetheless, he gained reelection in 1872, and almost gained a third nomination in 1880 before retiring to write his memoirs.

Ohio; commanded at the time by Captain Schenck, of the navy. It had not been determined, until a day or two before starting, that the 4th infantry should go by the Ohio; consequently, a complement of passengers had already been secured. The addition of over seven hundred to this list crowded the steamer most uncomfortably, especially for the tropics in July. In eight days Aspinwall was reached. At that time the streets of the town were eight or ten inches under water, and foot passengers passed from place to place on raised foot-walks. July is at the height of the wet season, on the Isthmus. At intervals the rain would pour down in streams, followed in not many minutes by a blazing, tropical summers sun. These alternate changes, from rain to sunshine, were continuous in the afternoons. I wondered how any person could live many months in Aspinwall, and wondered still more why any one tried.
