Hamlet
is based on a Norse legend composed by Saxo Grammaticus in Latin around 1200 AD. The sixteen books that comprise Saxo Grammaticus' Gesta Danorum , or History of the Danes , tell of the rise and fall of the great rulers of Denmark, and the tale of Amleth, Saxo's Hamlet, is recounted in books three and four . In Saxo's version, King Rorik of the Danes places his trust in two brothers, Orvendil and Fengi. The brothers are appointed to rule over Jutland, and Orvendil weds the king's beautiful daughter, Geruth. They have a son, Amleth. But Fengi, lusting after Orvendil's new bride and longing to become the sole ruler of Jutland, kills his brother, marries Geruth, and declares himself king over the land. Amleth is desperately afraid, and feigns madness to keep from getting murdered. He plans revenge against his uncle and becomes the new and rightful king of Jutland. Saxo's story was first printed in Paris in 1514, and Francois de Belleforest translated it into French in 1570, as part of his collection of tragic legends, Histoires Tragiques . Saxo's text did not appear in English until 1608, so either Shakespeare was fluent in French or he used another English source based on the French translation. Generally, it is accepted that Shakespeare used the earlier play based on this Norse legend by Thomas Kyd, called the Ur-Hamlet. There is no surviving copy of the Ur-Hamlet and the only information known about the play is that it was performed on the London stage; that it was a tragedy; that there was a character in the play named Hamlet; and a ghost who cried "Hamlet, revenge!"

The Danish History (Book IV) by Saxo Grammaticus
Amleth, finding the people so quiet, made bold to leave his hiding. Summoning those in whom he knew the memory of his father to be fast-rooted, he went to the assembly and there made a speech after this manner: "Besides, why tell again my own sorrows? Why count over my troubles? Why weave the thread of my miseries anew? Ye know them more fully than I myself. I, pursued to the death by my stepfather, scorned by my mother, spat upon by friends, have passed my years in pitiable wise, and my days in adversity; and my insecure life has teemed with fear and perils. In fine, I passed every season of my age wretchedly and in extreme calamity. Often in your secret murmurings together you have sighed over my lack of wits; there was none (you said) to avenge the father, none to punish the fratricide. And in this I found a secret testimony of your love; for I saw that the memory of the King's murder had not yet faded from your minds. Every heart had been moved while the young man thus spoke; he affected some to compassion, and some even to tears. When the lamentation ceased, he was appointed king by prompt and general acclaim. For one and all rested their greatest hopes on his wisdom, since he had devised the whole of such an achievement with the deepest cunning, and accomplished it with the most astonishing contrivance. Many could have been seen marvelling how he had concealed so subtle a plan over so long a space of time.

It is the most ambitious literary undertaking of medieval Denmark.
Gesta Danorum
In sixteen books, written in Latin on the invitation of Archbishop Absalon , it describes Danish history and to some degree Nordic history in general, from roughly 600 BC to the late 12th century . It is the most ambitious literary undertaking of medieval Denmark, told in a sparkling and entertaining language, that reads as well today as it did back then. The sixteen books can be categorized into two parts, book 1-9 being what is known as the Old Norse part and Book 10-16 being medieval history. Book 9 ends with Gorm the Old , the first factual documented King of Denmark Since the work itself contains not a single date of any kind, neither for events nor to identify when it was written it can be problematic dating some persons and events of the Old Norse part. The only timeframe is the mention of Jesus' birth during Frode III reign, in book 5. This single fixed point established the dating of persons and events contained in the first 9 books. By counting back the number of generations told of by Saxo, one arrives roughly at 600 BC for the start of the work.

Saxo Grammaticus on the Balts
Introduction Information on the Balts provided by Saxo Grammaticus and other Scandinavian sources is known to Lithuanian historians since the 1 st half of the 19 th century, but up till now it has still been very poorly investigated. As many as 10 out of 15 of Saxo's passages on the Curonians, Sembians, and Semigallians are in the first 9 books of "Danish history," where the historical tradition is mixed up with mythology and this makes the passages' interpretation very difficult. It is the lack of historical information on the Balts of the Viking Age, which compels us to investigate the legends provided by Saxo Grammaticus and to try to find some of the actual traces of historical events in them.
Research on the data of historical tradition is urgent not only in the case of Saxo Grammaticus. Legends about Lithuania's oldest past are still very poorly investigated; herein lie some still undiscovered possibilities to at least hypothetically extend our knowledge about the oldest history of Lithuania. The analysis of Saxo Grammaticus' data, just as that of any other source of historical tradition, is also important methodologically, as it helps us understand the relationship between legends and historical facts.

Late 12th - Early 13th Century A.D. Saxo Grammaticus, or "The Lettered", of whom little is known except his name, is the earliest chronicler of Denmark and one of the important historians of the Middle Ages. His historical memoirs originally written in Latin in the early years of the 13th Century A.D. The following excerts reflect the most direct and interesting instances of fighting and weapon use recorded by Saxo. They are similar to Norse Sagas, but are more historical and much less mythical. The text portions below are based on "The Nine Books of the Danish History of Saxo Grammaticus", translated by Oliver Elton (Norroena Society, New York, 1905). Saxo the Dane wrote 16 books of "Danish History", only the first nine have been translated into English. This electronic edition was edited, proofed, and prepared by Doug Killings (and assisted by Mr. James W. Marchand and Mr. Jessie D. Hurlbut ). Abridged for ARMA by J. Clements. The carnage that is being done without calls thee. By now the council-chamber is shaken with warfare, and the gates creak with the dreadful fray. Steel rends the mail-coats, the woven mesh is torn apart, and the midriff gives under the rain of spears. By now the huge axes have hacked small the shield of the king; by now the long swords clash, and the battle-axe clatters its blows upon the shoulders of men, and cleaves their breasts. Why are your hearts afraid? Why is your sword faint and blunted?

We were delighted to discover that this translation of Saxo Grammaticus' books has now been placed into the public domain. We discovered the books on a brilliant site that offers us electronic versions of a large number of hard to find books on interesting subjects: www.sacred-texts.com It is not known when Saxo Grammaticus was born, nor do we know the exact year of his death. But he does seem to have lived in the 12th Century. It might be interesting to compare Saxo's "Story of Aswid and Asmund" to the way it has been retold by Sir Walter Scott And in case you prefer to read Saxo Grammaticus in Latin, you might be interested to learn that there is a Latin version of his books on the site of Det Kongelige Bibliotek . The Danish History of Saxo Grammaticus
transcribed from "The Nine Books of the Danish History of Saxo Grammaticus", translated by Oliver Elton (Norroena Society, New York, 1905). Saxo was no lover of our Gods. Nevertheless, he did save some of their tales, bits and pieces that taken along with Snorri and the Elder Edda give us a richer view. Were it not for Saxo, the tale of Amleuth/Hamlet may not have survived to be made famous by Shakespere. Nor would we be aware there were differing versions of the Balder myth. Below are links to each of the nine books in the history. Some of the large books have been broken into two parts. Preface Book I Book II Book III ... Book IX

Preface Book I Book II Book III ... Book IX The Danish History of Saxo Grammaticus
Book V Part I After the death of Fridleif, his son FRODE, aged seven, was elected in his stead by the unanimous decision of the Danes. But they held an assembly first, and judged that the minority of the king should be taken in charge by guardians, lest the sovereignty should pass away owing to the boyishness of the ruler. For one and all paid such respect to the name and memory of Fridleif, that the royalty was bestowed on his son despite his tender years. So a selection was made, and the brothers Westmar and Koll were summoned to the charge of bringing up the king. Isulf, also, and Agg and eight other men of mark were not only entrusted with the guardianship of the king, but also granted authority to administer the realm under him. These men were rich in strength and courage, and endowed with ample gifts of mind as well as of body. Thus the state of the Danes was governed with the aid of regents until the time when the king should be a man. The wife of Koll was Gotwar, who used to paralyse the most eloquent and fluent men by her glib and extraordinary insolence; for she was potent in wrangling, and full of resource in all kinds of disputation. Words were her weapons; and she not only trusted in questions, but was armed with stubborn answers. No man could subdue this woman, who could not fight, but who found darts in her tongue instead. Some she would argue down with a flood of impudent words, while others she seemed to entangle in the meshes of her quibbles, and strangle in the noose of her sophistries; so nimble a wit had the woman. Moreover, she was very strong, either in making or cancelling a bargain, and the sting of her tongue was the secret of her power in both. She was clever both at making and at breaking leagues; thus she had two sides to her tongue, and used it for either purpose.
