Kenneth Grahame - A Famous Scottish Writer Kenneth Grahame (1859 - 1932) was born in Edinburgh, he went to school in Oxford. On leaving school he worked in the Bank of England, of which he wa secretary from 1898 to 1908. Some essays he contributed to W. E. Henley's National Observer were collected in 1893 under the title Pagan Papers. But his real talent showed in The Golden Age in 1895 and Dream Days in 1898, in which he described childhood with rare innocence and sympathy. It was for children that he wrote his masterpiec, The Wind in the Willows , in 1908. One of the greatest children's stories in the English language, it was adapted for stage by A. A.
