British Museum, Egerton MS. John Gower, poet and friend of Chaucer, was born around 1330, into a prominent Yorkshire family which held properties in Kent, Yorkshire, Norfolk and Suffolk. Gower's coat of arms is identical to those of Sir Robert Gower of Brabourne. Nothing is known of his education, though it has been speculated that he was trained in law. Gower himself held properties in Suffolk and Kent, where he seems to have resided until taking up residence in the priory of St. Mary Overies in Southwark, London, around 1377.
Gower's first work was Mirour de l'Omme i.e . Mirror of Man) (wr. 1376-79), an allegorical poem in French meditating on the fall of man and the effect of sin on the world. Gower later latinized the title to Speculum Hominis , and later changed it to Speculum Meditantis to fit with the titles of his later works. Around 1377, Gower began work on Vox Clamantis i.e . The Voice of One Crying), an essay in Latin elegiac verse. Like the Speculum Meditantis , it too treats of sinfulness, and criticizes the corruption of the society. It also provides a contemporary view of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381. Gower's moral and philosophical writings were highly praised by his peers. In 1385, Gower's good friend, Geoffrey Chaucer, dedicated the

John Gower: Life, Work, and Times
Welcome to my website dedicated to the life and work of the trilingual English poet John Gower (c. 1330-1408). Gower was a friend and contemporary of Geoffrey Chaucer (see my Chaucer chronology and the chronology companion website to learn more about him) and for centuries Gower rivaled Chaucer in stature. In modern times, however, Gower's reputation has sufferedlargely due to a persisting perception that Gower is boring and overly moralistic. I, for one, think Gower's work is incredibly interesting; thus I have created this site to invite students and scholars to read and appreciate Gower. I also intend this site to serve as a resource for the growing number of Gower enthusiasts out there.
This webpage contains images , a chronology of Gower's life, a bibliography , links to Gower texts online, and other Gower websites .This is a continual work-in-progress, so I will update/revise from time to time and add new links. If you have any comments or suggestions, please contact me

Name: John Gower Birth Date: c. 1330 Death Date: Nationality: English Gender: Male Occupations: author, poet John Gower Main Biography The English author John Gower (ca. 1330-1408) was one of the major court poets of the 14th century. His poems are not so vigorous as Chaucer's, but his criticism of his contemporaries is more direct. Very little is known about John Gower's early life. He probably held a legal office of some kind, perhaps in Westminster. His first major work, probably begun about 1376, was in French. It is called Miroir de l'Omme, or Speculum meditantis . In it Gower describes the development of sin, the vices and virtues, and the remedy available to man, with a special appeal to the Blessed Virgin Mary. Some time about 1377 Gower retired to the priory of St. Mary Overy in Southwark. He soon began work on his long Latin poem
