OLD AND NEW by: Edmund Gosse (1849-1928) I. B.C.
    OME, Hesper, and ye Gods of mountain waters,
    Come, nymphs and Dryades,
    Come, silken choir of soft Pierian daughters,
    And girls of lakes and seas,
    Fill all the earth and air;
    Shout back the echo there!
    All day in soundless swoon or heavy slumber,
    We lay among the flowers,
    But now the stars break forth in countless number
    To watch the dewy hours;
    And now Iacchus, beautiful and glowing,
    Adown the hill-side comes,
    Mid tabrets shaken high, and trumpets blowing,
    And resonance of drums.
    The leopard-skin is round his smooth white shoulders,
    The vine-branch round his hair,
    Those eyes that rouse desire in maid-beholders
    Are glittering, glowworm-fair;
    Crowned king of all the provinces of pleasure,
    Lord of a wide domain,
    He comes, and brings delight that knows no measure,
    A full Saturnian reign.
    Take me, too, Maenads, to your fox-skin chorus,
    Rose-lipped like volute-shells,
    For I would follow where your host canorous
    Roars down the forest-dells;
    The sacred frenzy rends my throat and bosom!
    I shout, and whirl where He

Sir Edmund Gosse.
Revelation
Ringstraked and pied, the great soft moths came flying,
The flickering flame, ascending, falling, dying.
Saw full rose lips as rounded as the cherry,
And flashing eyes decorous, pure, and merry.
Once more the silver-starry night was shining,
And crystals of a carven moon declining.
He sees the ecstatic Human from him stealing;
And dares not clutch what Love was half revealing. Previous chapter Back Home Email this ... Discuss Next chapter FAQ for more details.

60. Whitman's Essay, "Sir Edmund Gosse."
and yet, for want of a definite shape and fixity, doomed to sit for ever apartfrom the company of the Poets. Sir Edmund Gosse (18491928).
http://www.blupete.com/Literature/Essays/Best/GosseWhitman.htm
"Walt Whitman."
By Sir Edmund Gosse Fatima was permitted, nay encouraged, to make use of all the rooms, so elegantly and commodiously furnished, in Bluebeard Castle, with one exception. It was in vain that the housemaid and the cook pointed out to her that each of the ladies who had preceded her as a tenant had smuggled herself into that one forbidden chamber and had never come out again. Their sad experience was thrown away upon Fatima, who penetrated the fatal apartment and became an object of melancholy derision. The little room called "Walt Whitman," in the castle of literature, reminds one of that in which the relics of Bluebeard's levity were stored. We all know that discomfort and perplexity await us there, that nobody ever came back from it with an intelligible message, that it is piled with the bones of critics; yet such is the perversity of the analytic mind, that each one of us, sooner or later, finds himself peeping through the keyhole and fumbling at the lock. As the latest of these imprudent explorers, I stand a moment with the handle in my hand and essay a defence of these whose skeletons will presently be discovered. Was it their fault? Was their failure not rather due to a sort of magic that hands over the place? To drop metaphor, I am sadly conscious that, after reading what a great many people of authority and of assumption have written about Whitman - reading it, too, in a humble spirit - though I have been stimulated and entertained, I have not been at all instructed. Pleasant light, of course, has been thrown on the critics themselves and on their various peculiarities. But upon Whitman, upon the place he holds in literature and life, upon the questions, what he was and why he was, surely very little. To me, at least, after all the oceans of talk, after all the extravagant eulogy, all the mad vituperation, he remains perfectly cryptic and opaque. I find no reason given by these authorities why he should have made his appearance, or what his appearance signifies. I am told that he is abysmal, putrid, glorious, universal and contemptible. I like these excellent adjectives, but I cannot see how to apply them to Whitman. Yet, like a boy at a shooting-gallery, I cannot go home till I, too, have had my six shots at this running- deer.
