The Iowa Authors Collection "In 1945 the University of Iowa Library entrusted to one of its long-time librarians, Grace Wormer, the task of forming a special collection of books written by Iowa authors," wrote Frank Paluka in Iowa Authors: A Bio-bibliography of Sixty Native Writers (Iowa City: Friends of the University of Iowa Libraries, 1967). "An Iowa author, for the purpose of this collection, was considered to be any writer born in the state or definitely associated with Iowa who had written at least one published book. For non-native writers, a definite association with the state was usually interpreted to mean a residence in Iowa of twenty years or more." By 1967, the collection included the work of more than 800 writers. A 1993 article in by Robert McCown in Books at Iowa gives more details on the history of the collection.

Executive Summary of the Decade
Isaac Asimov writes lovingly about this decade and the one before in "Before the Golden Age: 8 Science Fiction Classics of the Thirties" [Fawcett/Doubleday, 1974, paperback]. Intermixed with his autobiographical recollections, his comments include the following. "That Golden Age began in 1938, when John Campbell became editor of Astounding Stories and remolded it, and the whole field, into something closer to his heart's desire. During the Golden Age, he and the magazine so dominated Science Fiction that to read Astounding was to know the field entire. In that sense, the Golden Age endured until 1950, when other magazines, such as

I
This is a list of "Queers" in history. The qualifications for
inclusion on this list are a: that the person be dead, and b: that the person be reputed to be "queer" and be of interest to modern
lesbian, gays, bisexual, transgendered and queer people.
II
I firmly believe that history is the story [French: "histoire"] we weave for ourselves from our investigations [Greek: "istoria"] into the past. Some, most in fact, of the people on this list were lesbian, gay or bisexual, but with some others the proof is limited, or frankly not compelling. For some, their "queerness" had little to do with sexual orientation but with gender transgression. For still others - the Japanese samurai, Greek and Roman aristocrats - it was not in fact at all "queer" in their society to take part in

    Oakhill Cemetery
(Saline Central Burial Ground) readings for
Saline, Saline Twp., Washtenaw Co., MI
Oakhill Cemetery is on 3 acres of land that is situated on the east side of Macon Road between Braun and Willow Roads in Saline MI. It is owned and maintained by the Township of Saline. This cemetery was created from two deeds, the first 1 acre was given to the township by Duncan Robinson for a burying ground. The last 2 acres were given by Milton and Rachel Reynolds in 1874 to the Saline Central Burial Ground as it was known when. The name was changed to Oakhill on Oct 5, 1911. The cemetery officially came under the jurisdiction of Saline Township on Sep 5, 1873 by the dissolution of the Saline Central Burying Ground Corporation. Some of the stones are broken off or are in bad shape and can not be read fully so question marks (?) are in that place. A special “thank you” to Barbara Burns who transcribed this information. Discoverers and doctors have a special place in a roll of honour because they have contributed to the well-being or comfort of millions. The work of Sir Sandford Fleming (1827-1915), inventor, scientist, surveyor and engineer, for instance, still affects us. A Scot by birth, he came to Canada in 1845 and was chief engineer of the Intercolonial Railway that linked Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes. From 1871 he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway, surveying its arduous route through the Rockies. But his greatest achievement was the establishment of the system of international standard time in 1884. Another Scottish immigrant brought the province even greater fame. While living at Brantford during the years 1874 to 1876, Alexander Graham Bell (1847-1922) invented the telephone and inaugurated a new era of communications for the world. Bell was also a pioneer speech therapist for the deaf. He moved to the United States but returned in 1890 to live in Nova Scotia. There at Baddeck he devoted the rest of his life to research. His Aerial Experiment Association led to the first manned flight in Canada in 1909. Sir William Osler, Bt., (1849-1919) was a native of Bond Head, Ontario. His medical education at Trinity and McGill was completed in London, Berlin and Vienna. Chosen first Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University in 1889, Osler became Regius Professor of Medicine at Oxford in 1905. Medical education and the treatment of patients in hospitals were radically altered by his ideas which he expressed in his book The Principles and Practice of Medicine. A vigorous, humane doctor and a noted diagnostician, he was also an important philanthropist. King George V created him a Baronet in 1911.
