Ralph Connor/The Rev. Dr. Charles W. Gordon: The Role of Archives in the Memorialization of a Canadian Literary and Theological Giant
By John Richthammer
(archivesguy hotmail.com)
The history of literary estates is filled with such what-might-have-been: what might have been destroyed, what might have been preserved, what might have been distorted or inked over.
Writing under the pen name Ralph Connor, Winnipeg Presbyterian minister, the Rev. Dr. Charles William Gordon became the most popular and best-selling novelist of the early twentieth century. Five million copies of his 30 novels were sold worldwide. In addition to this anchor collection, other archival material on Gordon exists in repositories across the country, while numerous books depict various facets of the life of this remarkable man. What is absent from any scholarship on the life of Charles W. Gordon is a consideration of how he may have viewed his own public memory. Did Gordon exhibit even a passing interest in his posthumous reputation and to what extent might such interest have been? Is there actual evidence which clearly suggests whether he exhibited or maintained an interest in or concern about the perpetuation of his historical memory or legacy to the world? Did he articulate any possible concern over what specifically would become of his papers and, if so, how did he make known his concerns? Do the various sources bear any such testimony? The fact that, in the last year of his life and under the heavy strain of illness, he wrote a lengthy autobiography would seem an obvious sign that Gordon, especially at the end of his life, was concerned with his own memorialization.

Under the pen name of Ralph Connor, Charles William Gordon, a Presbyterian minister, was the most popular Canadian novelist of the beginning of the 20th century. His first three western novels, Black Rock (1898) and the two shown here, were classic melodramatic and edifying adventure stories, and sold a total of 5 million copies, an amazing success.

At Cambridge Assizes on 12 March 1805, John Maskey was sentenced to seven years' transportation for having stolen stockings and gloves. On 27 July 1807, he left England on the "Duke of Portland", a 523-ton Bordeaux-built vessel under the command of Master I C Spence and carrying 189 convicts. John arrived in New South Wales on 10 Nov 1807. Mary Pritchard was convicted at the Monmouth Summer Assizes on 3 August 1801 and sentenced to seven years. She and her friend Margaret Harris had stolen goods from the shop of William Roberts in the early hours of 11 May 1801. Mary left England on the "Glatton" on 23 September 1802 and arrived in Sydney on 11 March 1803. John and Mary married on 18 August 1826 at Castlereagh, many years after they had started a family. Before becoming partner to John Maskey, Mary had two children fathered by Ferdinand Meurant. One was Edward Meurant , who went to New Zealand as a sealer and eventually settled there, working as a trader and government interpreter. The other was Elvira, who died at the age of six in a fire on her father's farm. Records also indicate that John and Mary's eldest daughter was the child of Samuel Terry. This family is still in outline form pending receipt of further information on, and verification of, dates and locations. Thanks to the many people who have already contributed information.
