. "A child asleep"
Text by Elizabeth Barret Browning (1806-1861)
Music by Edward Elgar How he sleepeth! Vision unto vision calleth,
While the young child dreameth on. Fair, O dreamer, thee befalleth With the glory thou hast won! Darker wert thou in the garden, Yestermorn, by summer sun. We should see the spirits rising Round thee, - were the clouds away. 'Tis the child-heart draws them, singing In the silent-seeming clay - Singing! - Stars that seem the mutest, Go in music, music all the day. Softly! softly! make no noises! Now he lieth still and dumb - Now he hears the angels' voices Folding silence in the room - Now he muses deep the meaning Of the Heav'nwords as they come. He is harmless - we are sinful, We are troubled - he at ease: From his slumber, virtue winful Floweth outward with increase - Dare not bless him! but be blesséd by his peace

    Scottish Placenames
    - Canberra, Australia
Of the names of the 118 suburbs in the Canberra-Queanbeyan area, 35 (29.7%) refer either to placenames that can be found in Scotland or to Scottish family names. Of course, some of the names are used in other parts of the British Isles as well, but at least 21 (17.8%) of these appear to be uniquely Scottish. Canberra is a planned city, created in the early twentieth century as the capital of the newly federated Commonwealth of Australia. A few of its suburbs have names that were already in common usage before the city was founded, for example, the names of homesteads or early settlers. However, the vast majority of Canberra's suburban names honour Australian politicians, explorers and cultural or sporting personalities. The Scottish-related names are therefore a comment on the Scottish diaspora across Australia as a whole and should not be interpreted as referring to Scottish settlement of Canberra itself. The proportion of placenames in Canberra that have a Scottish connection is fairly high - on a par with Calgary in Canada. This reflects the large number of Australian explorers, politicians and colonial administrators who were either born in Scotland or whose roots were Scottish. Official suburbs and other localities with names that are definitely or most probably of Scottish origin, whether directly or indirectly, are:
