‘I couldn’t wait for the day’: Young workers’ reflections on education during the transition to work in the 1960s
The school and labour market experiences of young workers are a major concern for both academics and policy makers alike. This concern has generated a great deal of research reflecting a wide range of debates around the transition from school to work. One of the first research projects to consider this process was undertaken in the early 1960s by researchers at the University of Leicester, led by Norbert Elias. The data was collected via interviews and whilst 910 interviews were completed, the data was not fully analysed or published. Recently, 866 of the interview schedules have been discovered and an initial analysis suggests that the data provides a significant insight into the transition from education to work in 1960s. This paper aims to present some of this data for the first time, exploring young workers’ reflections on education, their transitions to work and experiences of workplace learning. Cathedral and Camera, BALTIC (Dryden Goodwin, John Riddy, MarkŽta Luskacova) Still Life, Museo Alejandro Otero, Caracas, Venezuela Buenos Aires/Rosario,
http://www.frithstreetgallery.com/riddy.html
One of the most distinctive in British contemporary photography, John Riddy's practice exists in a singular relationship to a particular photographic inheritance. These photographs are meditations on the individuality and the poetry of certain places. His subject matter is broad - ranging from the unassuming domestic interior to images of Renaissance or Modernist architecture and the specific qualities of certain city spaces. Time, atmosphere, spatial illusion and cultural histories are compressed and extended in pictures that aim to defeat our expectations of black and white photographic descriptions. Remarks as Delivered by Secretary of Defense William S. Cohen, Dallas, Texas, Wednesday, November 10, 1999 Thank you very much. I was going to spend the first half of my presentation to you this morning talking about John Tower, but since that has already been done, I think I will skip the speech and just talk informally with you. As I'm looking out in the audience there's quite a mixture of some executives, faculty members, young students, high school students as well. I don't want to take this opportunity to inflict a 27-page speech that I had prepared for you this morning. I would like to begin with a quote taken from a book that was very important to me when I first went to Congress, it was written back in the late '60s. It was written by John Gardner called "The Recovery of Confidence."

Pageant was about to have one of its most shining representatives. John , having learned from his mistakes the previous year when he entered for the first time, came back to the Miss Florida Pageant in full force and, once again sponsored by Tacky's of Fort Lauderdale, took home the very well deserved title. Says Lola lush of Miami, "The year that Dana Manchester won Miss Florida was my very first time at the pageant. She was the winner at rehearsals as far as Iam concerned. I remember being at rehearsals with my Drag Mother Rachael Santoni and Bobbi Lake, respectfully Miss Floridas 1979 and 1991, and I remember commenting that Dana was the only one wearing women shoes as a boy(A beautiful pair of Charles Jordan may I add).I knew then and there that I was looking at our new Miss Florida. Her rendition of A Chorus Line is one of the best productions in the history of the Miss Florida pageant .She was a true talent and beauty!" John 'J.P.' Goodwin Biography
John “J.P.” Goodwin is the grassroots coordinator at the Humane Society of the United States, the world’s richest animal-rights organization. Goodwin, who previously co-founded the Texas-based Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade, is clear about his intentions, writing in one Internet activist listserv: “My goal is the abolition of all animal agriculture.” He’s developed a lengthy arrest record in pursuit of that goal. He was arrested and convicted for being the ringleader of a crew that vandalized fur retailers in multiple states during the 1990s. The animal-rights watchdog newspaper Animal People News profiled Goodwin in 2000, noting that he “gleefully announced a string of Animal Liberation Front mink releases and arsons against furriers and fur farms” while a “spokesman” for the underground terrorist group. Goodwin also handled the media after a Petaluma, California, slaughterhouse arson in February 1997. But he really shocked the public with his comments on the March 1997 arson at a farmer’s feed co-op in Utah. Referring to a fire that caused almost $1 million in damage and could easily have killed a family sleeping on the premises, Goodwin told the Deseret News , “We’re ecstatic.”
