Russian Literature: the 19th Century. The Golden Age of the national literature, when Russian literature obtained the tradition, history and interesting language: "the century of classics." Griboedov, Alexander Sergeevich, 1795-1829
The hope of Russian diplomacy, a brilliantly educated person, the author of the famous play Gore ot Uma The sorrow by the brains ). He could have been the country's intellectual leader, but he was killed during a riot, when Russian Embassy was attacked in Persia (Iran). His only play is performed in repertoires of most Russian dramatic theatres. Gore ot Uma about a character who is mulling over his own existence and the way he can improve himself and society. Thus the hero is a rich noble and the action takes place in the 19th century the story of the individual who can't follow the beaten way of life is still interesting for modern people. Modern American readers will probably find a lot of distance between themselves and Gogol, who writes with an observational comedy about the world he sees around him. But since the themes are timeless, his work will be pleasing, and often very funny, to most discerning readers. A Great Classic
The DIARY OF A MAD MAN is an insightful story by Gogol that is full of humor, sadness, tragedy and hope. The literary style is first class and fully exposes the inner turmoil of a man with a conflict in his soul. HOUSE OF THE DEAD, UNION MOUJIK, POOR FOLKS, explore that depth of human suffering that leads to depravity for individuals or groups of people. A Great Classic

Nokolai Vasilevich Gogol “The Nose” (1836) To discover the meaning of Gogol’s strange story, you must try to figure out why Kovalyov’s nose has fallen off. Look to the details in the story. Gogol’s purpose and his political point of view are revealed indirectly in between the lines of this, the most famous of all Russian short stories.
  • What does the barber Ivan Yakovelevich try to do with the nose he has discovered one fine morning while cutting open his breakfast roll? What does Kovalyov do for a living? Which social class does he belong to? Where does Kovalyov find his nose? Why is that so strange? What does Kovalyov usually do when he goes to church? Why is that difficult now? Why does Kovalyov rush off to the newspaper office? What does the Police Inspector tell Kovalyov when he asks him for help? What was the nose doing when the police officer apprehended it? What does the doctor tell Kovalyov after failing to put the nose back in its place? Why does Kovalyov blame Madame Podtochin for his predicament?
