Of Ukrainian origin, he first won literary success with fanciful and romantic tales of his native Ukraine in Evenings on a Farm near Dikanka (1831–32). His next stories, in Mirgorod (1835), contained elements of romance, humor, and the supernatural. “Taras Bulba,” part of the collection, is a vigorous description of the adventures of a 17th-century Cossack. Gogol then wrote several tales set in St. Petersburg. The most famous of these is The Overcoat (1842), about a downtrodden clerk who sacrifices much to buy a new overcoat that is stolen the first time he wears it. As a dramatist Gogol's fame rests on

Email Us NIKOLAI GOGOL (1809-1852) N IKOLAI VASILEVICH GOGOL was born at Sorotchinetz, in Little Russia, in March, 1809, the exact day being impossible to discover. The year in which he appeared on the planet proved to be the literary annus mirabilis of the century; for in this same twelvemonth were born Charles Darwin, Alfred Tennyson, Abraham Lincoln, Poe, Gladstone, Holmes, Chopin, and Mendelssohn. His father was a literary amateur, who wrote dramatic pieces for his own amusement, and who spent his time on the old family estate, not in managing the farms, but in wandering about the gardens and beholding the fowls of the air. The boy inherited much from his father; but he had the best of all private tutors, a good mother, of whom his biographer says, Elle demeure toujours sa plus intime amie At the age of twelve, Nikolai was sent away to the high school at Nyezhin, a town near Kiev. There he remained from 1821 to 1828. He was a poor student, having no enthusiasm for his lessons, and showing no distinction either in scholarship or deportment. Fortunately, however, the school had a theatre of its own, and Gogol, who hated mathematics, and cared little for the study of modern languages, here found an outlet for all his mental energy. He soon became the acknowledged leader of the school in matters dramatic, and unconsciously prepared himself for his future career. Like

Biography:
Nikolai Vasilevich Gogol, 1809-1852 The son of a small landowner, Nikolai Gogol was born in 1809 on the family estate in the province of Poltava. He was educated at the Niezhin gymnasium where he started a magazine and acted in student theatricals. In 1828 he went to St. Petersburg, obtained a government clerkship, and devoted himself to writing. In 1831-32 he published two volumes of Evenings on a Farm Near Dikanka , a collection of stories based on Ukranian folklore, which were enthusiastically received. He next planned to write a history of Russia in the Middle Ages; the work never materialized but the planning of it served to win him a chair of history at the Unicersity of St. Petersburg which he resigned in 1835. Meanwhile he published "Taras Bulba" and a number of short stories including "The Overcoat". On April 19,1836, his famous comedy The Inspector General was produced. The play stirred up controversy and the critics hailed its author as the head of the "naturalist" school. Gogol spent the next twelve years abroad, living mainly in Rome. During his voluntary exile, he completed
