41. GOETHE - LoveToKnow Article On GOETHE
Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von (17491832), German poet, dramatist and philosopher, was born at Frankfort-on-Main on. the 28th of August 1749.
http://18.1911encyclopedia.org/G/GO/GOETHE.htm
GOETHE
GOETHE, JOHANN WOLFGANG VON The works and events of the last twenty-five years of Goethes life may be briefly summarized. In 1805, as we have seen, he suffered an irreparable loss in the death of Schiller; in 1806, Christiane became his legal wife, and to the same year belongs the magnificent tribute to his dead friend, the Epilog zu Schillers Glocke. Two new friendships about this time kindled in the poet something of the juvenile fire and passion of younger days. Bettina von Arnim came into personal touch with Goethe in 1807, and her Briefwechsel Goethes mit dnem Kinde (published in 1835) is, in its mingling of truth and fiction, one of the most delightful products of the Romantic mind; but the episode was of less importance for Goethes life than Bettina would have us believe. On the other hand, his interest in Minna Herzlieb, foster-daughter of the publisher Frommann in Jena, was of a warmer nature, and has left its traces on his sonnets. - This many-sided activity is a tribute to the greatness of Goethes mind and personality; we may regard him merely as the embodiment of his particular age, or as a poet for all time ; but with one opinion all who have felt the power of Goethes genius are in agreementthe opinion which was condensed in Napoleons often cited words, uttered after the meeting at Erfurt: Voild un hommel Of all modern men, Goethe is the most universal type of genius, It is the full, rich humanity of his life and personalitynot the art behind which the artist disappears, or the definite pronouncements of the thinker or the teacherthat constitutes his claim to a place in the front rank of men of letters. His life was his greatest work. -

Goethe’s poetry expresses a modern view of humanity’s relationship to nature, history, and society; his plays and novels reflect a profound understanding of human individuality. Goethe’s importance can be judged by the influence of his critical writings, his vast correspondence, and his poetry, dramas, and novels upon the writers of his own time and upon the literary movements which he inaugurated and of which he was the chief figure. According to the 19th-century English critic Matthew Arnold, Goethe must be considered not only “the manifest center of German literature” but one of the most versatile figures in all world literature.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Quotes
He alone is great and happy who requires neither to command nor to obey in order to secure his being of some importance in the world. One can be very happy without demanding that others agree with them. Age does not make us childish, as some say; it finds us true children. Mathematicians are like Frenchmen: whatever you say to them they translate into their own language and forthwith it is something entirely different. Ignorant men raise questions that wise men answered a thousand years ago. Nothing is as terrible to see as ignorance in action. To be pleased with one's limits is a wretched state. Mysteries are not necessarily miracles. Before you can do something you must first be something. For a man to achieve all that is demanded of him he must regard himself as greater than he is. Character, in great and little things, means carrying through what you feel able to do. If a man writes a book, let him set down only what he knows. I have guesses enough of my own. If I say to the moment: 'Stay now! You are so beautiful'!

Goethe, Johann Wolfgang von
German writer and scientist. A master of poetry, drama, and the novel, he spent 50 years on his two-part dramatic poem Faust (published 1808 and 1832). He also conducted scientific research in various fields, notably botany, and held several governmental positions.

His poetry expresses a modern view of humanity's relationship to nature, history, and society; his plays and novels reflect a profound understanding of human individuality. Early Friendships
From 1770 to 1771 Goethe lived in Strasbourg, where he studied law, music, art, anatomy, and chemistry. In Strasbourg Goethe formed two friendships important for his literary life. One was with Friederike Brion, the daughter of a pastor; Goethe later used her as the model for feminine characters in several of his works. The other friendship was with philosopher and critic Johann Gottfried von Herder, who taught Goethe to appreciate the value of German folk poetry and German Gothic architecture as sources of inspiration for German literature. subjectivity Goethe in Weimar and Italy
In 1775 Charles Augustus, heir apparent to the duchy of Saxe-Weimar, invited Goethe to live and work in Weimar, one of the intellectual and literary centers of Germany. Goethe wrote little during the first ten years at Weimar. He began the composition of some of his best-known works, including the prose drama Iphigenia in Tauris (1787) and the character dramas Egmont and Faust. In 1786 Goethe went to Rome. He studied the art, architecture, and literature of ancient Greece and Rome and those Renaissance works that had been most strongly influenced by the ancients. During this time Goethe completed the dramas Egmont (1788) and Torquato Tasso (1790). These works brought into German literature the discipline of ideas and form that initiated the so-called classical period.

Johann von Goethe Quotes Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832)
He alone is great and happy who requires neither to command nor to obey in order to secure his being of some importance in the world. To be pleased with one’s limits is a wretched state. He who moves not forward, goes backward. Mastery is often taken for egotism. Daring ideas are like chessmen moved forward; they may be beaten, but they may start a winning game. Altogether national hatred is something peculiar. You will always find it strongest and most violent where there is the lowest degree of culture. To have a positive religion is not necessary. To be in harmony with yourself and the universe is what counts, and this is possible without positive and specific formulation in words. None are more hopelessly enslaved than those who think they are free. We are never deceived: we deceive ourselves. Being brilliant is no great feat if you respect nothing. Mysteries are not necessarily miracles. Nothing is more revolting than the majority; for it consists of few vigorous predecessors, of knaves who accommodate themselves, of weak people who assimilate themselves, and the mass that toddles after them without knowing in the least what it wants. Everything great and intelligent is in the minority.

About the Author
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) is often ranked with Shakespeare and Dante as one of the three most important poets in history. He spent the most important part of his life in Weimar and served the duchy in many official capacities. Although his interests ranged from biology to the theory of color, it is his literature, with its powerful presentation of human freedom and the search for meaning in life, that has been of enduring value. (Johann) Wolfgang von Goethe
(1749-1832 e.v.)
by T. Apiryon
German novelist, playwright, poet, critic, journalist, painter, theater manager, statesman, educationalist, lawyer, scientist, philosopher, alchemist, mystic and Freemason. He was a true Renaissance Man, a success at all of his vocations and avocations, but he was indisputably one of the greatest authors and poets of all time. The best known of his many works are Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre "Master William's Year of Learning" (1821), Die Leiden des Jungen Werther "The Sorrows of Young Werther" (1774), Dichtung und Wahrheit "Poetry and Truth" (1811), and his masterpiece, Faust (posth. 1832). Faust is universally recognized as one of the supreme achievements in all of literature. Goethe poured the entire vast reservoir of his wisdom and talent into this semi-autobiographical work, which deals with the spirit of Western Man, the dualistic dilemma between spiritual longing and sensual desires, aspiration and indulgence; and the drive for access to the infinite through knowledge. Faust is based on the legend of Dr. Faustus, also popularized by Christopher Marlowe. Although there apparently was an historical Dr. Faustus (John Faust of Wittenberg, c.1520 e.v.), his mythical life story appears to have been built upon events from the lives of three other, more well-known men:
