In literature Goethe gained early fame with The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774), but his most famous work is the poetic drama in two parts, FAUST. Like the famous character of this poem, Goethe was interested in alchemy. He also made important discoveries in connection with plant and animal life, and evolved a non-Newtonian and unorthodox theory of the character of light and color, which has influenced such abstract painters as Kandinsky and Mondrian. (from The Divine Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt am Main, the first child of a lawyer Johann Caspar Goethe, and Katherine Elisabeth Textor, the daughter of the mayor of Frankfurt. Goethe had a comfortable childhood and he was greatly influenced by his mother, who encouraged his literary aspirations. After troubles at school, he received at home an exceptionally wide education. At the age of 16, Goethe began to study law at Leipzig University (1765-68), and he also studied drawing with Adam Oeser. An unhappy love affair inspired Goethe's first play, The Lover's Caprice (1767). After a period of illness, Goethe resumed his studies in Strasbourg (1770-71). Some biographers have speculated that Goethe had contracted syphilis - at least his relationships with women were years apart. Goethe practised law in Frankfurt (1771-72) and Wetzlar (1772). He contributed to

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe THE boy, Goethe, was a precocious youngster. At the early age of eight he had already acquired some knowledge of Greek, Latin, French and Italian. He had likewise acquired from his mother the knack of story telling; and from a toy puppet show in his nursery his first interest in the stage. Goethe's early education was somewhat irregular and informal, and already he was marked by that apparent feeling of superiority that stayed by him throughout his life. When he was about 16 he was sent to Leipzig, ostensibly to study law. He apparently studied more life than law and put in his time expressing his reactions through some form of writing. On at least two occasions, this form was dramatic. Finally, in 1770 Goethe went to Strassburg, this time really intent on passing his preliminary examinations in law, and with the somewhat more frivolous ambition of learning to dance. Along with his study of law, he studied art, music, anatomy and chemistry. A strong friendship with the writer, Herder, was likewise no part of Goethe's experience at this time, a contact which was of considerable importance in these formative years. In 1771 Goethe returned to Frankfurt, nominally to practice law, but he was soon deep in work on what was to be his first dramatic success

GOETHE (1749-1832) - ON HIS 250TH BIRTHDAY
Rarely in any nation's history has posterity been bestowing upon a (non-royal) individual the honor of naming an era after him. The designation "The Age of Goethe" (1770-1832) is such an exception. For during that time German culture reached a golden age with the genius of Goethe at its center, interpreter of the universe and the individual, torn between reason and passion, knowledge and belief. In the field of literature the movements of Storm and Stress ( Sturm und Drang ), Classicism ( Klassik ), and Romanticism ( Romantik Klassik " with Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven, followed by the " Romantiker " Schubert, Weber, Mendelssohn, and Schumann. Johann Wolfgang Goethe was born on 28 Aug. 1749 into a patrician family in Frankfurt/Main. His education there embraced many areas and foreign languages. He studied law at Leipzig and later in Strassburg, where under J.G. Herder's influence he discovered the beauty of Gothic architecture, folk poetry, Homer and Shakespeare. Falling in love with Friederike Brion gave us some of the most beautiful love poems. But farewell it was as he took up his legal carrier in Frankfurt and Wetzlar, only to fall in love again, this time with Charlotte Buff - who had already been spoken for. The poetic transfiguration of this love episode, the epistolary novel "Young Werther's Sorrows" was an immediate international success. Goethe's own dissolved engagement is mirrored in "Lili Lieder" and the play "Stella." Numerous and powerful "Sturm und Drang" poems fill the period before he accepted young Prince Carl August's invitation to the court at Weimar in 1775. Goethe was not only the friend and quasi educator of the prince, but assumed administrative responsibilities for the Duchy of Sachsen-Weimar as well, from inspecting its mines to presiding over the finance chambers.

German philosopher who was the intellectual leader of the anti- Newtonian movement in Germany. His approach to nature was essentially poetic. He presented a naturalistic view of color in a paper entitled "Theory of Colours." This exposition consisted of Goethe's theory, a rebuke of Newton's theory of colors, a historical account of earlier inquirers and investigations, and a summary. Goethe's major work on botany was Metamorphosis of Plants.

Biographical Summary
Germany and the world celebrated Goethe's 250th birthday in 1999. The German novelist, poet, playwright, and scientist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was born in Frankfurt am Main on August 28, 1749. But he didn't stay there. (See "Places identified with Goethe" below.) Goethe (GUEH-tah) is a giant in German and world literature. In fact, he coined the term Weltliteratur and spoke Greek, Latin, French, English and Italian. Aside from its quality, the sheer volume of work during his 82-year lifetime is impressive. Among other works, Goethe wrote a worldwide, best-selling novel ( Die Leiden des Jungen Werthers, 1774), volumes of poetry, and several dramas, including his masterwork:

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
It is difficult to know where to place Goethe: he was a German writer, the leader of the German Romantic movement; he was a philosopher; but, foremost, he was a scientist; and, so, I place him here, in these pages, amongst the other classic scientists. As a scientist, Goethe carried on extensive research, especially in plant biology and in optics writing "On the Theory Colors, 1810." Goethe looked at things in a different manner, different than those thinkers up to his time; "he always attempted to see the individual phenomenon as part of an organic, developing whole ..." ( Benet's ). During the span between 1775 and 1786 (1786 being when he left for his two year sojourn in Italy), while in Weimar, he and Charlotte von Stein took up with one another. Stein was a woman Goethe worshiped for a decade; there was not much romance; it was a "spiritual companionship." Upon Goethe's return from Italy, where he had experienced a "sensual awakening," he was soon to learn "he and Charlotte had little in common." The "theme of renunciation, which is extremely important in all Goethe's later works, is largely based on his experience with Charlotte." He turned to poetry to describe his way. It was in his poem "Prometheus," (written 1774?) we see what was to become a motto for a whole new movement ("Weimar Classicism," or "German Romanticism), "man must believe not in gods but in himself alone." ("... all truth comes from God ... God speaks by and through everything. Every insect, every leaf has something to say." [

Son of the imperial councillor Johann Caspar Goethe. From 1765 he studied law in Leipzig, but in bored him and he spent much of his time in society. His life was wild and afther three years he returned to Frankfurt with a hemorrhage of the lungs and a tumor on the neck. After he recovered, in 1770 he continued his law studies in Strasbourg.
In 1772 the son of a preacher named Johann Jerusalem committed suicide. This event was the inspiration for Goethe's "Die Leiten des jungen Werthers" (1774, translated as "Sorrows of Young Werther").
In Sep 1775 Duke Karl August invited him to Weimar, where he was offered a permanent situation as privy councillor at the court in 1779. This appointment resulted in a scandal, since Goethe was no nobleman. Goethe became the friend and companion of the Duke and was became the rising star of society in Weimar.
In 1786 he travelled to Italy for two years. This experience made him feel like reborn. In Rome he stayed with the painter Tischbein, with whom he also travelled in Italy.
