WILLIAM GODWIN William Godwin nacque a Wisbech (England) nel 1756. Frequentò alcuni anni di scuola e studiò con un tutore privato a Norwich e in seguito frequentò il Presbyterian College di Hoxton. Quandò lasciò il collegio, Godwin era un Tory ma, diventato ministro della chiesa a Beaconsfield, entrò in contatto con il movimento dei Rational Dissenters e cinque anni dopo era un convinto radicale. Nel 1787 Godwin lascia la carriera ecclesiastica e diventa scrittore full time. Ispirato dagli scritti di Tom Paine , Godwin pubblicò Enquiry into Political Justice (1793). In questo libro Godwin sostiene che se la gente agisse in modo razionale, si potrebbe vivere benissimo senza leggi nè istitutzioni. Nel 1794 Godwin pubblicò un romanzo d'avanguardia, per quei tempi, The Adventures of Caleb Williams In 1797 Godwin sposò Mary Wollstonecraft che morì poco dopo la nascita della loro figlia Mary . In memoria della moglie scrisse Memoirs of the Author of a Vindication of the Rights of Women (1798). Le idee politiche di Godwin ebbero una influenza determinante su alcuni autori contemporanei, come Percy Bysshe Shelley e Lord Byron. Godwin e Shelley diventarono amici, ma i loro rapporti divennero difficili dopo che Shelley si innamorò della sedicenne Mary e scappò con lei.

Jeg drister meg derfor til å si at det ikke er et resultat av en nøytral (men av en politisk vurdering) å plassere Godwin som den "første" i rekken av anarkismens "store tenkere". Jo mer du toner ned anarkismens forbindelse med politisk handling, med arbeiderbevegelse, sosialisme og klassekamp, jo mer plass vil du gi tenkere som Godwin, for å si det enkelt. Hver og en får avgjøre om det er positivt eller negativt.... Men det er selvfølgelig fortjenstfullt av Fjørtoft forlag å sørge for at Godwin endelig kommer på norsk. Han er stadig svært lesverdig. Noen ting kan man likevel etterlyse ved denne utgaven, f.eks. et sammendrag av de delene av Enquiry... som ikke er oversatt her. Det ville gjort det lettere å sette Godwins argumentasjon rundt eiendomssystemet inn i dens rette sammenheng. Videre skulle jeg ha ønsket at utgiverne hadde tatt seg tid til å redegjøre nærmere for diskusjonen av statsmakten innenfor den radikale republikanismen på 1780- og 1790-tallet, og for "virkningshistorien" av Godwins verk. Det ville i større grad aktualisere Godwins idéer i dag også for lesere som ikke allerede er interessert i anarkismen. På mange måter var det altså de radikale dissenteres tanker bl.a. om en organisasjon av uavhengige menigheter som var Godwins utgangspunkt. Disse flyttet han så over i en verdslig sammenheng og ga en politisk argumentasjon for. Og som oversetteren poengterer i sitt velskrevne forord: "I dag kan den økologiske visjon i Politisk rettferdighet av små, selvstyrte samfunn der arbeid og materielle goder deles likt inspirere oss til kamp mot et EU der all makt er samlet hos et lite antall politikere, byråkrater og industriledere".
