The occasion, as the tenth verse shows, was not the great city festival of the Lupercalia on February 15, but the country celebration which fell on the 5th of December. William Ewart Gladstone 1809 - 1898
Famous Victorian reforming British Prime Minister who served four terms as and was MP for Greenwich. William Ewart Gladstone, the fourth son of Sir John Gladstone, was born in Liverpool on 29th December, 1809. Gladstone was a MP and a successful Liverpool merchant. William was educated at Eton and Christ College, Oxford. At the Oxford Union Debating Society Gladstone developed a reputation as a fine orator. At university Gladstone was a Tory and denounced Whig proposals for parliamentary reform. Famous as Disraeli's rival and for their spirited debates, Gladstone had a long and distinguished career in public service which began in 1832 when he entered Parliament as a Tory (Conservative). Serving until 1895, except for a one year absence in 1846, he served in numerous governments beginning with Peel's ministry in junior capacities. Gladstone's first major office was that of President of the Board of Trade (Minister of Industry and Commerce) in Peel's second ministry (1841-46). He was Chancellor of the Exchequer (Minister of Finance) in Aberdeen's government, cutting duties and attempting to abolish income tax. His efforts failed due to the need for funds to carry on the Crimean War. He also served in Palmerston's second ministry (1859-65) again effecting tax reductions. When Palmerston died, Gladstone stayed on as Chancellor of the Exchequer under Russell through 1866. In 1867, he followed Russell as leader of the Liberal Party.

http://www.scottishradiance.com/flotsam/flotsam0405.htm
I imagine the first question anyone will ask is what is a column called "Scottish Flotsam". I guess we will have to begin with what is "flotsam". Among the definitions of the word are "things washed ashore" or "miscellaneous trifles". Well, we believe you can find some great treasure on the ocean shore. But you will never know what you will find or its value. So we decided that is what this column is - flotsam. We wanted a place to put things that didn't fit anywhere else and might be of interest. Each item could be a column itself and might be some day but for now it will be the flotsam, which washes our way. Lets begin with a famous Scot. William Ewart Gladstone (1809 - 1898) Four-time prime minister of Great Britain, Gladstone remained a vigorous campaigner until his death. Having been persuaded against a career in the Church, Gladstone was elected to Parliament in 1832, as a Tory. He made his mark from the start and held minor office in Peel's government of 1834-35. In July 1839 he married Catherine. The two maintained a 'rescue' home for prostitutes and Gladstone would, famously, trawl London streets at night, trying to persuade prostitutes to start a new life. Although he was slowly moving towards liberalism, in 1843 he entered Peel's Conservative cabinet. However, in 1852 he joined Aberdeen's Whig government as Chancellor of the Exchequer, a position he would ultimately hold three times. His efforts to extend the franchise failed and ended the government in 1866. Two years later, the Liberals were back, with Gladstone in charge. Queen Victoria, who disliked him personally, was forced to ask him to become prime minister.

AMD v. Intel: Will we care?
By Frank Hayes Jul 5 2005 - 9:20pm Think we'll still be paying attention to AMD's antitrust lawsuit against Intel in a couple years? Don't count on it. AMD v. Intel has been manna from heaven for reporters during a slow news week, and one not-quite-disinterested observer is already calling it "the tech story of the year." But hot lawsuit stories tend to cool down in this business. They're just not flashy enough. major ruling that effectively disposed of one of SCO's claims and set a December 22 deadline for SCO to finally and specifically identify what code SCO believes IBM pirated.

Background
Think About It! From Anatole France (1844 - 1924): "The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread."
"To accomplish great things, we must dream as well as act."
"The finest words in the world are only vain sounds if you cannot understand them." From Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (1929 - 1968): "Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men."
"In the end, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends."
"We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools."
"The good neighbor looks beyond the external accidents and discerns those inner qualities that make all men human and, therefore, brothers."
"The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands at times of challenge and controversy."

Oscar Fingal O'Flaherty Wills Wilde, born in 1854 in Dublin, Ireland, was the second son of Sir William Robert and Lady Jane Francesca Wilde. At the age of ten, Wilde entered the well-known Portora Royal School, where he excelled in Greek studies. His interest in Greek continued at Trinity College, Dublin, where John Mahaffy, an eminent Greek scholar who later took Wilde on a tour of Italy, was his tutor. Wilde was awarded a scholarship in classics from Magdalene College, Oxford, which he entered in 1874. During his fourth year at Oxford, Wilde won the prestigious Newdigate Prize for imitative poetry with a verse praising Ravenna, a city he had visited with Mahaffy and the burial site of Dante. In addition to his studies, Wilde began to develop his role as poseur and aesthete. Wilde received his BA in 1878 and, after an additional year at Oxford, went to London where he began writing. In 1880 Wilde published Vera; or, The Nihilists, and in 1881 he was hired by Richard D'Oyly Carte to boost Gilbert and Sullivan's new opera Patience in America by means of a lecture tour. Dressed in black velvet and a full length fur coat, he spoke on the new aestheticism from New York to San Francisco. He met with Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Louisa May Alcott, Walt Whitman, and Jefferson Davies, among others.
