Born at Fasque House in Fettercairn, Gladstone was the grand old man of 19th-century British politics. He was the leader of the Liberal Party and Prime Minister in four governments from 1868 to 1894. He was responsible for major reforms in every sphere of national life and for the development of imperial and foreign policy. He also stamped his moral authority on the politics of his time but finally divided the Liberal Party on the issue of Irish Home Rule. Gladstone was also a considerable scholar and author in his own right. Fasque House has an exhibition of Gladstone memorabilia.

William Ewart Gladstone , the fourth son of Sir John Gladstone, was born in Liverpool on 29th December, 1809. Gladstone was a MP and a successful Liverpool merchant. William was educated at Eton and Christ College, Oxford . At the Oxford Union Debating Society Gladstone developed a reputation as a fine orator. At university Gladstone was a Tory and denounced Whig proposals for parliamentary reform.
In 1832, the Duke of Newcastle was looking for a Conservative candidate for his Newark constituency. Although a nomination borough, Newark had been spared in the 1832 Reform Act . Sir John Gladstone was a friend of the Duke of Newcastle and suggested his son would make a good MP.
Two years after entering the House of Commons as MP for Newark, Sir Robert Peel , the Prime Minister, appointed William Gladstone as his junior lord of the Treasury. The following year he was promoted to under-secretary for the colonies. Gladstone lost office when Peel resigned in 1835 but returned to the government when the

William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898)
William Ewart Gladstone was born on 29 December 1809 at Rodney Street, Liverpool. He was the fourth son and fifth child of a family of six born to Sir John Gladstone and his wife Anne Mackenzie Robertson. Sir John Gladstone made his fortune in trade especially with America and the West Indies: it was there that he owned sugar plantations. William Gladstone was educated at a preparatory school at Seaforth Vicarage near Liverpool before attending Eton between 1821 and 1827. From there he went to Christ Church Oxford between 1828 and 1831. In 1831 he spoke at the Oxford Union against the Reform Act, saying that any electoral reform would lead to revolution. His Degree was in Classics but he also studied Mathematics and in 1831 was awarded a Double First in the subjects. In the 1832 election following the passing of the Reform Act he was elected as the Tory MP for Newark-on-Trent, on the influence of the Duke of Newcastle; he took the seat of

William Ewart Gladstone (1809-1898): a proposal of marriage
On 17 January 1839 William Gladstone sent a proposal of marriage to Catherine Glynne. The style of writing is typically Gladstonian: convoluted and often unclear. This text is taken from Philip Magnus' Gladstone: a biography (London, John Murray, 1954), pp. 38-9. [Gladstone] was with the Glynnes by moonlight in the Colosseum on 3 January 1839; and he had then an opportunity to speak to Catherine, for a moment, alone. He began to speak of his love, but Catherine would not respond. She moved away, and Gladstone blamed himself bitterly; he feared that his hopes had all been ruined. He was inhibited by his repressions from folding the girl in his arms, and taking her by surprise, and by storm. He resolved, therefore, to trust to a letter, but he postponed writing it until 17 January, two days before he was due to return home. Its breathless and tortuous style bears witness to the tumult of his emotions. The fact that he emerged more or less successfully from its second paragraph, consisting of one enormous sentence of 141 words and 18 clauses and sub-clauses, is perhaps worthy of remark: 62 Piazza di Spagna

British political leader who served as Liberal prime minister four times (1868–1874, 1880–1885, 1886, and 1892–1894). He enacted educational and parliamentary reforms and supported Irish home rule. Encyclopedia Gladstone, William Ewart, 1809–98, British statesman, the dominant personality of the Liberal party from 1868 until 1894. A great orator and a master of finance, he was deeply religious and brought a highly moralistic tone to politics. To many he represented the best qualities of Victorian England, but he was also passionately disliked, most notably by his sovereign, Queen Victoria , and by his chief political rival, Benjamin Disraeli Early Career Entering Parliament (1833) as a Tory, he became a prot©g© of Sir Robert Peel , who made him undersecretary for war and the colonies (1835). In Peel's second ministry, he became vice president (1841) and president (1843) of the Board of Trade, introducing the first government regulation of the railroads, and then (1845) colonial secretary. A supporter of free trade, he resigned (1846) with Peel in the party split that followed repeal of the corn laws and gradually aligned himself more and more with the Liberals. As chancellor of the exchequer (1852–55, 1859–66), he eloquently proposed and secured measures for economic retrenchment and free trade. He also espoused the cause of parliamentary reform (see

"Can you apprise me either accurately or with such approximation to accuracy as may be relied on for practical purposes, what proportion of the sugar of Java is necessarily consigned to Holland [the colonial power], and how much is available to meet the general demand of the world directly from the place of growth?"
At the Board of Trade Gladstone, still in his thirties, was deeply involved in Tariff Reform and gained an unrivalled insight into the workings of industry and commerce.

Researchers W. E. Gladstone The great Victorian statesman, four times Prime Minister of Britain, was interested in psychical research which he considered "the most important work which is being done in the world - by far the most important." On October 29, 1884, he had a successful slate writing sitting with William Eglinton . After the séance he was quoted as saying: "I have always thought that scientific men run too much in a groove. They do noble work in their own special line of research, but they are too often indisposed to give any attention to matters which seem to conflict with their established modes of thought. Indeed, they not infrequently attempt to deny that into which they have never inquired, not sufficiently realising the fact that there may possibly be forces in nature of which they know nothing." Shortly afterwards Gladstone joined the SPR. Some reminiscences of his attitude towards things psychic are published in Violet Tweedale's Ghosts I Have Seen Source (with minor modifications): An Encyclopaedia of Psychic Science by Nandor Fodor (1934).
